Have you heard about the mind body connection before? ✨

Our emotions have a big impact on how we feel physically.

Have you ever felt so nervous that your hands started to shake? Or have you ever felt so worried and anxious that you stayed up all night?

The mind and the body are not two separate entities, as much as we tend to treat them that way.

Our physical and emotional health are deeply interconnected, which is why we call it the mind-body connection. This is the link between a person’s thoughts, attitudes, behaviours and their physical health.

While scientists have long understood that emotions affect our bodies, we’re beginning to understand more about how specific emotions and the hormones released when we experience an emotion, influence our physical health. They can affect our blood pressure, heart rate, sleep patterns, and even our appetite.

When we’re stressed, our body releases two different hormones known as the stress hormones: adrenaline and cortisol. They are meant to give us a quick energy boost (also known as an adrenaline rush) so we have the ability to get ourselves out of dangerous situations quickly.

However, our minds can’t tell the difference between physical danger and mental danger or turmoil. Meaning you can get worked up enough to release stress hormones even though there is no real physical danger to escape.

Research on yoga and meditation has been exploring the connection between mind and body. Studies show that movement done with mindful breathing activates the relaxation response through the vagus nerve. Doing so helps to move the nervous system out of the “fight, flight, or freeze” response that is associated with stress, and into the “rest and digest” response, which increases emotional calm and well-being.

Try one of our online yoga classes the next time you find yourself needing to activate your relaxation response 🤍

Picture this: you are mid barre workout, your music is blasting, you're dancing and laughing your way through the movements, and the further you get into class, the more you start to feel it in your legs. You look down at your feet and see that - yes, your legs are indeed shaking.

It's not just you, the barre burn is real 🔥

Stretching has a positive impact on both our mental and physical health! Here are our top three favourite benefits:

1. Daily stretching increases flexibility! This allows you to perform everyday activities with more ease and freedom of movement. It can also help delay the reduction of mobility that can come with age. The sooner you start the better

2. Daily stretching calms your mind and reduces stress. When we are emotionally and mentally stressed, our muscles tense up and shorten. Stretching helps to relax the muscles and encourages the release of endorphins, which helps our minds de-stress.

3. Stretching increases blood flow to muscles which can shorten your recovery time post workout and reduce muscle soreness. Taking time to stretch for a couple of minutes after a workout will help ensure that you move through the rest of your day with ease ✨

How to find balance with your workout routine to avoid burnout 💆‍♀️

1. Mix up the intensity and style of your workouts

You don’t need to be doing intense workouts every single day! Try switching up your routine, the types of workouts you are doing, and the location you are doing them in for a change of scenery. If and when you are able to, take your workouts outside to get some fresh air!

2. Prioritize sleep and rest

Sleep has SO many essential benefits including reducing stress levels, improving your memory, and increasing focus! Taking time to recover and rest when you are working out is paramount so that you can feel your best.

3. Do workouts you love

Working out shouldn’t feel like a job you have to do, find styles of workouts that you love and enjoy and mix in activities like going for a hike, going on a walk or run with your four legged friend, or going for a scenic bike ride.

4. Recruit a friend
You don’t need to always do your workouts solo. Ask a friend to come to a group class with you, do workout in the park together, or go for a walk somewhere you both enjoy 🧡

Are you a morning person or do you like to save your daily movement for mid/end of day? ☁️

Here are our reasons why we love a good morning Pilates practice:

1. Pilates mobilises and rehydrates stiff joints first thing in the morning. When we move our joints, synovial fluid is released; which allows us to move through a greater range of motion. For many people, often when we first wake up we are on the stiffer side. A morning pilates practice helps get the fluid moving so we can move about our days without any stiffness and more ease, ready to take on the challenges of the day!

2. Pilates helps you function optimally throughout the day! Morning movement gets our blood flowing to the brain which helps us feel more alert and focused.

3. Pilates in the morning sets the tone for the quality of your breath throughout the day. Pilates breath is slower and deeper, which makes you feel more calm and relaxed. It also mobilises your thoracic spine which helps diaphragmatic breath for the rest of the day.

4. Pilates activates your metabolism. Morning movement kick-starts your metabolism, the rate at which your body converts food into energy. Doing this first thing means that you will be burning energy for longer during the day.

5. Pilates in the morning gives you a mood boost! There's no better way to start your day than with an endorphin boost.

Our top tips for building a routine with healthy habits that stick ⚡

Step One: Build a daily routine. When we have a daily routine that we follow, it reduces the amount of decisions each day and enables us to know exactly what we need to get done without having to think too much. This makes things like getting in daily workouts or movements, very easy and part of the daily flow.

Step Two: Start Habit Stacking. Habit stacking is pairing a new daily habit with a pre-existing habit so that it's easier to remember to do it. It utilizes the strong synaptic connections that we already have.

Step Three: Set reminders on your phone. If you are someone who is on the more forgetful side, set reminders on your phone with a reminder app or just set alarms on your phone for a specific time each day as a reminder to do something. This will help keep you accountable and on track!

Step Four: Reward yourself when you succeed. I don't know about you but we love a good reward here at Sasha Alex Studio! Make sure you give yourself the acknowledgement you deserve when you are hitting your goals and staying on track. We love setting rewards for each new goal achieved.

Step Five: Don't let the missed days get you off track. No one is perfect, and there are most likely going to be days where you are completely off schedule. Don't let that get you off track or fall out of your routine! You can start anew every minute, hour, day, week or month. You don't need to wait for a special occasion to start again.

Head to the studio to kick stark your year with our 7 day free trial that will give you access to yoga, barre, pilates, and tons of other spicy workouts 🔥
