Let's talk about Cholera, an illness affecting most populations in crowded regions,in regions where the sanitation hygiene is poor, an illness common in areas where water sources and unclean and unsafe.Every year 1.3 - 4.0 million cases of Cholera occur around the world and 21000- 143000 deaths occur from cholera (WHO) ; yet it is preventable. What are the causes of Cholera and how is it transmitted?
Answer: Cholera is caused by bacteria called vibrio cholerae found in contaminated water or food. Bacteria is mainly present in human f***s and can be deposited in water sources or can be transmitted by flies or humans to food items to be consumed by others.Other transmission route is human to human through handshakes with a person who has gotten into contact with contaminated f***s.
What then are the signs and symptoms of Cholera?
Answer: few cases do not present any symptoms.Severe contamination to the human body causes vomitting,cramps,frequent diarrhoea and leads to dehydration. Cholera is fatal and if not attended to immediately one can get into a shock and can die within hours.
How to Cholera be treated?
Answer : Firstly administer Oral Rehydration solution to people with diarrhoea.Seek immediate medical attention if one has diarrhoea and they are vommitting.Antibiotics given at health centres help kill the infection and rehydration is needed asap.
SO WHAT IS KEY IN PREVENTING CHOLERA???
Answer: Practice good sanitation and hygiene.Wash hands thoroughly at all recommended times using soap e.g. before touching food, after using the toilet, Boil or treat water e.g. with chlorine to kill germs present,cover food at all times when not eating, stop open defecation,use toilet facilities instead

1. Cover food always
2. Wash hands with soap under running water for about 20seconds before touching food,during preparation. Dry with paper towels
3.Wash fruits and vegetables at all times before eating
4. Store perishables and leftovers in refrigerator always
5. Do not wash chicken,as bacteria spreads onto surrounding areas.
6.Disinfect kitchen sinks as tops frequently
7. Use a glass chopping board rather than a wooden one
8.wash utensils with soap and warm water,rinse under running water and let them air dry
