MARANATHA • A Letter to the Church on the Feast of Trumpets

“Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” II Timothy‬ ‭4:8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

And what a day it is. When we had to push back the release date and make room for the singles, we found ourselves with this date, which also happens to be the Feast of Trumpets, the first of the fall feasts which for believers point to Jesus’ Second Coming. Prophetically, this feast points to the day when the final trumpet will resound, and Jesus will again set foot upon the earth, the faithful are resurrected, and the long awaited King will reign from David’s throne.

(It’s also the eve of Malaysia Day, a day that bears great personal significance for when Singapore and Malaysia became one.)

May this album sound a trumpet call, its ten songs stir up awe and repentance, to prepare a people for the coming of their Bridegroom, King and Judge. Maranatha!

SING A NEW SONG | D-1 to Maranatha One more day! I wrote SING A NEW SONG some time ago (even led it at conferences) when the Lord opened up Isaiah 42, and invited us as a region into the storyline for the islands and coastlands to sing His song. But it never felt quite complete. Until the Lord began to connect the dots concerning singing in the nations and Jerusalem. That’s when the rest of the song wrote itself: “Until the nations love Your name, until Jerusalem’s a praise, until we hear the final shout, we’ll keep singing.” Fun fact: check out the dangdut-inspired rhythm @caleb.kay worked into the song to tie it to and give voice to worship rising from Southeast Asia. TRIBE & TONGUE | D-2 to Maranatha @ianchew7 and I wrote this song together one afternoon and I’m so stoked to be able to record this live together. Ian came up with the idea for the chorus of the nations echoing the groaning of creation, and it instantly provoked me to write the bridge. I’d been thinking about how one day we would literally be able to hear God’s footsteps on the earth. When they heard Him in the Garden they fled and hid themselves, but the next time we hear Him in the New Jerusalem we would run towards Him in worship. ONE PURSUIT | D-3 to Maranatha @alaricemusic and I wrote this song in the midst of the pandemic out of a desire to strengthen the Body of Christ suddenly thrust into isolation, turmoil and tragedy. We recorded it in our homes, with borrowed gear and a little help from our friends at @thir.st. When things began to open up, someone sent me a recording of our friends at @lifegensibkl in Malaysia using this song in a time of corporate worship, backed by a full band. It was so powerful; I knew one day whenever I recorded a live album this had to be on it. “Even when the mountains move into the sea, even when the tempest rages endlessly,” may we love Him with all our hearts. DREAM OF YOUR HEART | D-6 to Maranatha I wrote DREAM OF YOUR HEART with @ryankondo some years ago, when I was with my NZ whanau ministering at @ywamfurnacenz @furnaceprayerroomnz. Immediately after preaching a message on the dream of God’s heart, Ryan told me, “Bro, we have to write a song about that.” We wrote all of it in Ryan’s living room, and have been gripped ever since by what it would look like for a generation to make it their ambition to live for His Commission, to wholeheartedly ‘waste’ their lives for the dream of His heart. MARANATHA | D-7 to Maranatha MARANATHA, the title track, encapsulates the Church’s cry in response to the revelation of Jesus as Slain Lamb, Bridegroom, King and Judge. I wrote it way back in the day, sang it at conferences, but never felt like it was the right time to record and release it. Until now. So I’m really excited that this is finally being released - and I love the arrangement thanks in large part to @gideonlimmy and @caleb.kay. Maranatha drops on September 15. “Maranatha” is an Aramaic word that means “our Lord has come” or “our Lord, come.”

The early church, in the midst of persecution, used it as a greeting, reminding themselves that Jesus was coming back. May the same cry of longing resound throughout the Bride today, as we love, labor and long for His return.

The album art depicts a longing for Jesus to come on the clouds (Rev. 1:7) to establish His “upside down” kingdom upon the earth as it is in heaven.

One Saturday during the Covid lockdown in 2020, I was meditating on Isaiah 63 and was struck by its depiction of God. I was also reading Tozer’s “Knowledge of the Holy” and was convicted that we need a right view of God restored. For what He is about to do on the earth, we will need a high view of God and an unoffendable heart; I wrote this song in response to what the Lord was teaching me.

It was so special to be able to sing this song with my beloved wife , whose gift of leading worship and writing songs stem from her deep knowledge of God and relationship with Jesus. Her unconditional “yes” to Jesus has given me courage to continue to follow the Lamb wherever He leads.

And it also moved my heart deeply to have my dear friend sing with me the lyrics: “I’m not going to be offended when it all comes down; all Your ways are just”, in the midst of his testimony of suffering, trial and loss in this past season.

Five more days to go. May we always stand beside Him, never against. May He keep us faithful to the end.

M A R A N A T H A

The heart of and the live recording was essentially this: songs that, firstly, would reveal Jesus who is soon returning as the Bridegroom who will stop at nothing to have a Bride compatible to Himself, a King who will come to rule the nations of the earth from His throne in Jerusalem, and a Judge who will come to give justice and recompense and make the wrong things right.

Then consequently, songs that will disciple the Church into her glorious destiny to be the Bride of Christ who overcomes Satan by the blood the Lamb, the word of our testimony and who would love not our lives even unto death.

That night, as the nations gathered from the region and beyond, His palpable presence was felt from the moment hundreds of voices declared as one: “What would it profit me to gain the world but lose my soul; I know my life is not my own.”

As we weaved through songs declaring His desire, we responded by laying down our lives for the dream of His heart.

As the blood of the martyrs cry out both to Jesus for justice - and to us, the Church down the ages, we joined in and cried out “How Long?”

And as We glimpsed the beauty and worth of the slain Lamb, He marked us with courage to pledge our allegiance to Jesus and to follow the Lamb wherever He leads.

More than a recording, I believe it was a night that friends of the Bridegroom proclaimed with urgency and unction the message of the gospel of the Kingdom; that lives of the generations were marked in the place of worship and intercession to love, labor and long for His return; and that the Spirit with great zeal was stirring the heart of the Bride to together say, “Come.”

What a glorious privilege we have been given to in this hour join with the saints through the ages to hasten His coming through our lives and our song.

May You have a people who would finally say that we cannot live without You here. May this be the heart cry of the nations and the generations: Maranatha!

O N E more day… until we gather as One Bride to cry out: “Maranatha, come Lord Jesus.” May the songs from the islands provoke the nations to sing to the soon returning King.

Five things to take note of. Five days to go.

Tag five friends who are going with you, so they take note of these things too.

If prophecy is an invitation into the storyline of God, perhaps the Lord is waiting for a people to simply say “Yes”.

What if this was more than a live recording or a worship night? What if it’s our invitation as a region into the reality that Isaiah saw thousands of years ago?

“Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them. Let the wilderness and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice. Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them shout from the mountaintops. Let them give glory to the Lord and proclaim his praise in the islands.” Isaiah‬ ‭42:10-12‬

Y O U’ R E I N V I T E D !

On April 23, I will be recording my first live worship album since “Here In The Waiting” in 2015. It will be a night of exuberant worship and prayer, and I am thrilled beyond measure to have friends from different nations joining me.

The message steeping within these 10 original songs are sobering; yet my prayer is that they will stir the Church with courage to rightly know this Jesus who is soon returning and to ready their hearts to see Him.
