Next up, we have Iyan, a Communications and New Media Major at NUS!

Besides forging new friendships and building memorable experiences together as a team, the exposure to the media industry and behind-the-scenes of producing a film awed Iyan. As a beginner in filmmaking, Iyan has gained new insights not only from industry professionals but from his peers who came from different backgrounds as him.

“My groupmates taught me a lot about scriptwriting, being more experienced themselves and I enjoyed their kind tutelage as I tried to reconcile the writing techniques I had already learned with the unfamiliar notion of writing with the intention to produce a film.”

🗣Here are some words of advice from Iyan:🗣

Go in with an open mindset! The challenges set during the competition give you a lot of room to work with so you can push yourself and learn new skills/hone the skills you already have. You will have quite a lot of chances to develop your personal voice as well during the process of scriptwriting and filming.

The individuals involved (organisers, media company, professors etc) all give great advice which really helps with analysing your video as well as your experience during the competition itself so do listen to them well.

Don't be too scared because ultimately this competition is quite lenient to beginners and there will be masterclasses to help get you up to speed with some of the fundamentals of filmmaking.

All the best!

Next up, let us hear from Cai Tong, a Business Administration major at NUS!

Participating in Pitch It! 2022 with some knowledge in filmmaking, Cai Tong still found the workshops and content led by industry experts insightful. Diving deeper into the different aspects of filmmaking (i.e. Three Act Structure, Key Elements of Treatment, How to Develop A Logline etc), she felt that she has benefited a lot from coming to Pitch It!

🗣Here are some words of advice from Cai Tong: 🗣

My advice for Pitch It! 2023 participants is to be as creative as they can and to contribute as many ideas as they can during the brainstorming sessions as it may help to ignite some thoughts for the creation of their team's story treatment.

This week, let us hear from our past participants about their experiences with us at Pitch It!

A graduating Year 4 Accountancy and CNM major at NUS took the leap of faith last year and signed up for Pitch It! 2022 alone — Like many others, not knowing anyone else can be scary.

Wen Yu did not have any experience in film production prior to Pitch It! Despite not having prior knowledge of video production, it turned out to be a really positive experience working with everyone because nobody was excluded for not being as knowledgeable in certain areas. Everyone was learning from the workshops and industry experts/mentors together as a group, sharing ideas and helping one another.

🗣Here are some words of advice from Wen Yu: 🗣

My advice would be to enjoy every moment of it and be participative. The mentorship with the scriptwriters, film production workshops and excursions were what made the whole process interesting and fun. It was a good build-up to the actual filmmaking process and the skills they shared were helpful. Don't go into the competition thinking that you have the best film idea and make winning the only goal, sometimes listening to the opinions of others and learning from feedback is equally important. Ultimately, it is the journey that will bring you more fulfilment than the end product!

23/02/2023

We heard you!

The CNM Society is organising a session for some of you who have questions about Pitch It! 2023 and want to find out more about the competition, such as the key dates, workshops, judges, specific themes, timeline and more!

Last but not least, introducing our last panel judge Ms. Pearlyn Tseng✨

Since joining the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) in 2015, Pearlyn has initiated public education initiatives, such as the Beyond the Label movement to address stigma towards individuals with mental health conditions. She also provides strategic direction for Community Chest and President Challenge Campaigns.

His collaboration with Hong Kong producer, Andy Lau, 'Love Story' was also featured at the 2006 Locarno International Film Festival.

Determined to stretch the limits of local cinema with works such as the thriller, 'Kidnapper' and historical drama, 'It's A Great Great World', Kelvin is known for his sensitive treatment of Singapore's turbulent history in his outstanding works.

It is with great pride that we have Kelvin share with the finalists his expertise in film and cinematography as we champion a new generation of upcoming filmmakers!
