Too much ultra-processed foods linked to lower heart health
American Heart Association Scientific Sessions, Oral
Americans get more than 50% of their daily calories from ultra-processed foods. Measures of heart health decrease as ultra-processed food consumption rises.
Monday, Nov. 11, 2019
DALLAS, Nov. 11, 2019 — Ultra-processed foods, which account for more than half of an average American’s daily calories, are linked to lower measures of cardiovascular health, according to preliminary research to be presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2019 — November 16-18 in Philadelphia. The Association’s Scientific Sessions is an annual premier global exchange of the latest advances in cardiovascular science for researchers and clinicians.
Researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that for every 5% increase in calories from ultra-processed foods a person ate, there was a corresponding decrease in overall cardiovascular health. Adults who ate approximately 70% of their calories from ultra-processed foods were half as likely to have “ideal” cardiovascular health, as defined by the American Heart Associations’ Life’s Simple 7®, compared with people who ate 40% or less of their calories from ultra-processed foods.
Foods were categorized into groups by the extent and purpose of industrial processing they undergo. Ultra-processed foods are made entirely or mostly from substances extracted from foods, such as fats, starches, hydrogenated fats, added sugar, modified starch and other compounds and include cosmetic additives such as artificial flavors, colors or emulsifiers. Examples include soft drinks, packaged salty snacks, cookies, cakes, processed meats, chicken nuggets, powdered and packaged instant soups and many items often marketed as “convenience foods.”
“Healthy diets play an important role in maintaining a healthy heart and blood vessels,” said Zefeng Zhang, M.D., Ph.D., an epidemiologist at the CDC. “Eating ultra-processed foods often displaces healthier foods that are rich in nutrients, like fruit, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein, which are strongly linked to good heart health. In addition, ultra-processed foods are often high in salt, added sugars, saturated fat and other substances associated with increasing the risk of heart disease.”
Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2011 and 2016, researchers at the CDC reviewed the results from 13,446 adults, 20 years of age and older, who completed a 24-hour dietary recall and answered questions about their cardiovascular health.
Cardiovascular health is defined by the American Heart Association’s Life’s Simple 7 as measures of healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels, avoidance of to***co products, good nutrition, healthy body weight and adequate physical activity.
“This study underscores the importance of building a healthier diet by eliminating foods such as sugar-sweetened beverages, cookies, cakes and other processed foods,” said Donna Arnett, Ph.D., past-president of the American Heart Association and dean of the College of Public Health at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. “There are things you can do every day to improve your health just a little bit. For example, instead of grabbing that loaf of white bread, grab a loaf of bread that's whole grain or wheat bread. Try replacing a hamburger with fish once or twice a week. Making small changes can add up to better heart health.”

Abstract: Moringa Oleifera (MO), a plant from the family Moringacea is a major crop in Asia and Africa.
MO has been studied for its health properties, attributed to the numerous bioactive components,
including vitamins, phenolic acids, flavonoids, isothiocyanates, tannins and saponins, which are
present in significant amounts in various components of the plant. Moringa Oleifera leaves are the
most widely studied and they have shown to be beneficial in several chronic conditions, including
hypercholesterolemia, high blood pressure, diabetes, insulin resistance, non-alcoholic liver disease,
cancer and overall inflammation. In this review, we present information on the beneficial results that
have been reported on the prevention and alleviation of these chronic conditions in various animal
models and in cell studies. The existing limited information on human studies and Moringa Oleifera
leaves is also presented. Overall, it has been well documented that Moringa Oleifera leaves are a good
strategic for various conditions associated with heart disease, diabetes, cancer and fatty liver.

Added sugar: Where is it hiding?
Added sugar is everywhere in the food supply. It's so ubiquitous that you might find some packaged and processed foods unappetizing without it.
Evolution has hard-wired our palates to prefer sweet-tasting foods to obtain quick energy and to avoid bitter-tasting poisons. But in America today, our diet has reinforced and strengthened that preference beginning in early childhood. Americans take in an average of more than 17 teaspoons of sugar (about 290 calories) a day from added sugars, often in sweetened beverages, far more than recommended.
Sugar is added to countless food products, including breads, condiments, dairy-based foods, nut butters, salad dressings, and sauces. The sugar is added not just to impart sweetness. It's also used to extend shelf life and adjust attributes like the texture, body, color, and browning capability of food.
To start reducing added sugar in your diet, first it helps to know where it comes from. Here are the basics.
Where's the sugar?
Unless you consume only whole, unprocessed foods, you are bound to have added sugars in your daily diet. Sugar-sweetened beverages lead the pack, but many other foods also contain added sugar—sometimes a substantial amount in a typical portion.
Sugar-sweetened beverages.
Sugar-sweetened beverages contribute about half of the total added sugar in the U.S. food supply. The source of the sweetness in most products is high-fructose corn syrup. These sugary drinks include any of the following:
regular soda
juice drinks, like fruit punch and juice "cocktails" (but not whole fruit and vegetable juices)
energy drinks
sports drinks
sweet tea
sweetened coffee drinks
sweetened water
any other beverages with sucrose or high-fructose corn syrup added to enhance sweetness.
It's important not to confuse sugar-sweetened juice drinks with whole fruit juices. Processed beverages like fruit punch or cranberry juice cocktail contain a fair amount of added sugar—in the case of cranberry juice cocktail, the sugar is added to counter the naturally sour taste of cranberries. This is an example of a fruit drink that is also a sugar-sweetened beverage, and therefore a source of added sugar. Whole (100% fruit) juices contain only the sugars in the juice extracted from the fruit or vegetable. However, it's a good idea to limit even whole juices in your diet.
Sugar-sweetened drinks can pump a large amount of added sugar into your body, and quickly. These beverages are not as filling as sweet whole foods like fruit, so it's easier to consume a lot of them. On average, Americans get more than 200 calories a day from sugary drinks, about four times what we consumed in 1965.
Sweets and desserts.
Brownies, cakes, cookies, doughnuts, ice cream, pastries, pies, puddings, and sweet rolls are just some of the processed foods widely understood to contain substantial amounts of added sugar.
Honey and syrups.
Sugars naturally present in honey and syrups, including maple syrup, are also considered added sugars. Although honey and syrup are sold as freestanding products, you don't eat them by themselves. They are squirted into hot drinks, drizzled on pancakes and waffles, or added during baking or making sweets.
Condiments.
Condiments are defined as spices, sauces, or other preparations that you add to food to enhance its flavor. Tomato ketchup, relish, barbecue sauce, salad dressings, and salsa are condiments, and they can contain considerable amounts of sugar per serving.
Prepared foods.
A vast variety of prepared foods contain additional sweeteners. Breakfast cereals contain added sugar, but so do ready-to-eat meals, breads, soups, tomato sauces, snacks, and cured meats.
Among the many processed and prepared foods with added sugar are sugar-sweetened yogurts. Plain unsweetened yogurt contains naturally occurring milk sugars, but added sugar can double or triple the total amount of sugar.
New nutrition labels in the works will make it easier to know how much of the total is added sugar as opposed to natural milk sugars.

You could be accidentally eating enough plastic each week to make a credit card
By Kay Vandette
Earth.com staff writer
A disturbing new report has revealed that you could be unknowingly eating 5 grams of plastic each week, which is the equivalent of a credit card.
The biggest culprits are tap and bottled water, according to the No Plastic in Nature: Assessing Plastic Ingestion from Nature to People report. But plastic was also found in shellfish, beer, and even salt.
Researchers from the University of Newcastle conducted the report after the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) commissioned the project.
Data from 52 peer-reviewed studies were reviewed and analyzed for the report which found for the first time that people eat around 250 grams (about half a pound) of tiny plastic pieces each year.
It’s well known that microplastics are invading our world’s marine habitats, but the results of this study show that plastic pollution is also spreading to our own food web.
“These findings must serve as a wake-up call to governments. Not only are plastics polluting our oceans and waterways and killing marine life – it’s in all of us, and we can’t escape consuming plastics. Global action is urgent and essential to tackling this crisis,” said Marco Lambertini, WWF International Director General.
The researchers found that tap and bottled water were the largest sources for plastic ingestion worldwide, but the report highlights regional plastic patterns that impact how much plastic people are exposed to in different areas.
There was twice as much plastic discovered in drinking water in the US than drinking water in Indonesia or Europe.
The sheer prevalence and abundance of plastic pollution leaked into food and water proves that this is a global problem and can not be overlooked.
“If we don’t want plastic in our bodies, we need to stop the millions of tons of plastic that continue leaking into nature every year,” said Lambertini. “In order to tackle the plastic crisis, we need urgent action at government, business, and consumer levels, and a global treaty with global targets to address plastic pollution.”

A major new study suggests it’s possible to avoid developing dementia
The study was published this month by scientists at the University of Exeter and presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2019 in Los Angeles
Living a healthy lifestyle could help you reduce your risk of dementia, even if you have a genetic risk of the disease, a study published last month in the peer-reviewed health journal JAMA found. The study analyzed data from 196,383 adults of European ancestry aged 60 and older. Of that sample, the researchers identified 1,769 cases of dementia over a follow-up period of eight years.
The risk of dementia was 32% lower in people with a high genetic risk if they had followed a healthy lifestyle, compared to those with an unhealthy lifestyle.
This study looked at four main signs of a healthy versus unhealthy lifestyle. Those who were more likely to develop dementia reported eating an unhealthier diet higher in sugar and salt, did not engage in regular physical activity and smoked ci******es. (The researchers considered “moderate alcohol consumption,” as well as regular exercise, no smoking and a healthy diet, as part of a healthy lifestyle.)

Chemotherapy warning as hundreds die from cancer-fighting drugs Patients should be warned about the dangers of chemotherapy after research showed that cancer drugs are killing up to 50 per cent of patients in some hospitals.
The use of "silver" used to be main stream, until big pharma intervened.
Can it really only be all about greed? There are solutions that can significantly benefit our immune system that seem to be contested by those that can profit from more costly less effective products and thus lead to our immune systems being overwhelmed to the extent that there are now close to 140 autoimmune diseases?
What if there was something easily available that was so anti-pathogenic it could change the disease dynamic? The late Professor Rustum Roy was bringing this to light more than ten years ago with a natural substance that has been effective for thousands of years. From Roy et al (2007)
"By 1900 a variety of devices, medications, etc., were widely advertised for various health remedies. No scientific papers challenging the clinical efficacy of these earlier practices appeared. But over the next several decades following the discovery of penicillin, the emergence of the organic, biochemical ‘antibiotics’ caused the disappearance of these older (albeit much cheaper) remedies, yet silver stents and other state of the art devices have been in continuous use in major hospitals for some decades, attesting to the bactericidal efficacy of the metal. These results, in a preliminary way, are parallel to the many empirical observations made by physicians for the last 100 years on the use of metallic silver and water in various combinations for human health."

As Pat Andersen says - "Awesome plant we call a weed...nature has so many things we just need to open our eyes.."
Have you seen these plants? They are called Broadleaf or Broadleaf Plantain
It grows especially well in poor, rocky soil (such as driveways) and is often seen alongside dandelion. More often than not, you will see plantain growing in gravel pits and construction sites as nature seeks to regenerate the soil. Introduced to North America in the 1600s, it was once called “White Man’s Foot” by the Native Americans who witnessed that where the Europeans tread and disrupted the soil, plantain sprung up.
Plantain has often been the go-to remedy for hikers plagued by mosquitos. Because it draws toxins from the body with its astringent nature, plantain may be crushed (or chewed) and placed as a poultice directly over the site of bee stings, bug bites, acne, slivers, glass splinters, or rashes. Bandage the area and allow the plantain to work its magic for 4-12 hours. Plantain may also be used to create a balm for emergency kits, or an infusion used as a skin or general wash. It is also a notable, soothing remedy for hemorrhoids.Plantain is renowned for its healing effect on the digestive system. This is especially useful for anyone who has been damaged by antibiotics, anti-inflammatory or pain medications, food allergies, or Celiac disease. Both leaves and seeds specifically target the digestive system for healing. The leaves may be steeped as tea, added to soups, or dried with a sauce similar to kale chips. The seeds – a type of psyllium – can be ground or soaked for bulk mucilage or absorbable fibre, which, consumed before meals, may help with weight loss.
Because plantain is a gentle expectorant and high in silica, an infusion can be helpful for lung problems, coughs, and colds.
Plantain is almost a panacea for the human body, treating everything from all menstrual difficulties, all digestive issues, to nearly all skin complaints, and even arthritis. Add to salads, chew to ease thirst, or enjoy in stir fries. This versatile wild vegetable will keep you in good health for years to come!

So when you are walking in any store that sells Round Up (glyphosate) you may want to consider that this store is participating in a giant experiment and perhaps these findings from Kulik et al (2014) will not alarm you...they terrify me.
MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES OF THE LIVER, KIDNEYS, AND ADRENAL
GLANDS OF EXPERIMENTAL ANIMALS AFTER LONG TERM FEEDING WITH
ROUNDUP READY GENETICALLY MODIFIED SOYA
Summary. For 485 days, pigs were fed 15-20% raw protein from thermally treated roundup ready GM soya. This resulted in the development of protein dystrophy of the kidneys and liver, which testifies to the reduction of adaptive opportunities of the organs. The most expressed declines from the norm were in the adrenal glands, which had considerable edema
with discomplexation of the cells and dystrophy and atrophy of endocrine cells of all areas of the cortex, a criterion of functional exhaustion.
I've been wondering about this.
Scientists Keep Warning About The Dangers of 5G; Will We Listen? Over 180 scientists and doctors in almost 40 countries are warning the world about 5G health risks.
The science is clear! This is a medical study by Dr. Howard Fisher.
A darkfield microscopic evaluation of the live blood effects caused by Moringa oleifera Howard W. Fisher, Colombe Gauvin. A darkfield microscopic evaluation of the live blood effects caused by Moringa oleifera. 90Life Research, 2019, 2(3): 87-92.
If you are going to a meat substitute as a "healthy" alternative, Dr. Howard Fisher has some information for you.
As a vegetarian for more than three decades, I am not sure if I am happy that all these new products to simulate the texture of meat are coming out or unhappy because they do not declare their GMO status. The Impossible Burger just raised a fortune and are penetrating the market in a large way but they should clarify if the Impossible Burger is healthy or just another GMO fabrication.
Mom Across America is doing an excellent job calling out those that do not make it clear. “We are shocked to find that the Impossible Burger can have up to 11X higher levels of glyphosate residues than the Beyond Meat Burger according to these samples tested. This new product is being marketed as a solution for “healthy” eating, when in fact 11 ppb of glyphosate herbicide consumption can be highly dangerous. Only 0.1 ppb of glyphosate has been shown to alter the gene function of over 4000 genes in the livers, kidneys and cause severe organ damage in rats.**** I am gravely concerned that consumers are being misled to believe the Impossible Burger is healthy.” stated Zen Honeycutt, Executive Director of Moms Across America.
"The Impossible Burger is a new genetically modified (GM) plant-based product that was prominently featured at the Natural Products Expo West. Burger King, White Castle, Hard Rock Cafe, Red Robin, Cheesecake Factory** and hundreds of other restaurants now carry the product where it does not have to be labeled or described as GM on the menu. The Impossible Burger is made of GMO soy, which has been shown to cause organ damage in animal studies and has been shown to be significantly different from non-GMO soy. The GM ingredients of the Impossible Burger, which includes a genetically modified yeast and GM soy leghemoglobin proteins, 46 of which are undisclosed and untested, are even more concerning to many consumers than the long-term health effects from glyphosate because of the reported immediate allergic reaction potential, which is acknowledged by the manufacturer. The part of the genetically modified soy used in the Impossible Burger has never before been allowed in the human food supply and has not been properly safety tested."
For anyone that thinks this is a "tin-foil hat" theory, I will post the link to the National Institutes of Health study in the comments below.

You don't know what you cannot know. They still sell round up.....everywhere. Well over $2B in fines have been issued against Monsanto, now owned by Bayere.
According to Zen Honeycutt, “If Bayer goes bankrupt due to the outcome of about 14,000 lawsuits filed against them for the carcinogenic effects of glyphosate herbicides, who will become liable for harm to the public? I wonder if it will be retailers and food brands who continue to expose the public to toxic glyphosate herbicides.”
