Centering on the culture and strength of American Indian and Alaska Native people, this segment of the Hear Her™ campaign shares stories from five American Indian women who experienced pregnancy-related complications. In addition, CDC has released culturally appropriate resources that raise awareness of the urgent maternal warning signs. This includes conversation guides, palm cards and posters that help American Indian and Alaska Native people who are pregnant and postpartum and their support people recognize the urgent maternal warning signs and get the care they need. CDC has also released materials to support healthcare professionals who serve American Indian and Alaska Native communities in their delivery of respectful, culturally appropriate care.

This month is all about breastfeeding/chest feeding! There's no right or wrong way to do it, but there are some standard practices everyone should know 😊 This includes how to engage milk medicine with body modifications!

If you have ni**le piercings, make sure to talk to a healthcare provider and piercer for guidance on how to best keep both you + your little one's bodies safe! Sometimes this can mean waiting to get the piercing, taking out the jewelry during feeding time, or even all together and re-piercing down the line (this is to help avoid choking hazards).

Always remember that parenthood is unique to you and supported by the help of those who care about you and your little family ❤️

Happening tonight!! 💛💦 You know that time in middle of the night when it is just you and baby? It can be so special and at the same time so isolating. Our Late Night Support Circle is a time for those of us on the "night shift" to come together. Members of the Indigenous Milk Medicine Collective will be there including Camie Goldhammer a (Lactation Consultant) to answer your questions or just listen. We hope to see you there... that is unless you are sleeping. Then sleep ;)

“What do you want your little one(s) to know about you, your family, your
pregnancy? Are there stories that are important for them to carry, that you
can introduce and nurture as they grow? During today’s zoom gathering for pregnant & parenting families, we will explore ways of curating memories for your family from an early age. From baby books and shadow boxes; to quilts, songs, and gardens; you can
revive/continue old traditions, or create new ones ❤️”

Every 👩👩🏾‍🦱🧕🏻 has the right to a positive childbirth experience. Yet women across the world face unacceptable mistreatment during childbirth. Women everywhere face violations of their rights – including rights to:
❌ privacy
❌ informed consent
❌ have a trusted companion of choice throughout childbirth

Update: Spots for this week’s trainings have been filled. Thank you all for spreading the word!
————————-
I realize that it is probably impossible, but I figured I would atleast try 🤷🏻‍♀️…

I just had two cancellations today for the Center for Indigenous Midwifery’s Midwifery Assistant training that starts in the morning. There are currently 130 people on the wait list, so I try to fill each training completely- but the last minute nature of this all is challenging (it’s not their fault, emergencies happen).

We are traveling to Orcas Island this evening and will be there until Friday. Attendance at the entire event is mandatory. No cost to participants, food & lodging provided. Open to BIPOC and queer/trans birthworkers. PM me ASAP if you are interested!

Working while pregnant or nursing can be challenging. Minnesota law protects pregnant employees who need more water, food, and restroom breaks or have lifting restrictions. Employees who need to express milk at work have paid break time to do so under the changes that took effect Jan. 1. For more information about the law and resources to save as a reference, visit https://www.health.state.mn.us/people/wic/bf/morebflinks.html.

Mitakuyapi!

As our organization is visioning and planning, we’ve been deep in the work of gathering and developing Indigenous birth resources for our community in Standing Rock and beyond.

If you would please fill out this short survey and help us gauge the needs and interests of our community so we can better support the families who are planning, preparing, and supporting each other in welcoming life Earth side and the gentle care that takes place afterwards.
