Comparison of Electromyographic Activity of the Superior and Inferior Portions of the Gluteus Maximus Muscle During Common Therapeutic Exercises | Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy 03/05/2021

Gluteal Inhibition and Low Back Pain:

The term gluteal inhibition refers to the hypo activation of the glute max in relation to its antagonists. Also known as "dead butt syndrome", gluteal inhibition has been attributed to lumbopelvic hip complex dysfunction, low back pain, and even knee pain.

Given that portions of the glutes perform varying and even opposing tasks, how are you to know what exercises can help you resolve your symptoms and correct the dysfunction?

Lifestyle plays the largest role in assessment and correction of muscular imbalances.
1. Do you sit all day?
2. Do you stand all day?
3. What does your posture look like (sway back, anterior pelvic tilt, hyper kyphotic)?
4. What do your hips feel like (tight, loose, painful)?
5. Are your hips uneven, or rotated?

All of these factors are assessed and addressed when entering a corrective exercise program, but if you're curious about what parts of the glutes perform which tasks... stay tuned. Part 2 of Addressing Gluteal Inhibition is coming soon.

If you or anyone you know experiences chronic low back pain, knee pain, or has muscle imbalances of the lumbopelvic hip complex shoot me a message, or email [email protected].
