In light of the alarming 2021 World Bank report findings that nearly 90% of Filipino children in the later stages of primary school face challenges in reading, CHED-CAR has embarked on a strategic initiative to enhance Teacher Education Program curricula across Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). This decision follows a comprehensive consultative meeting with Vice Presidents for Academic Affairs (VPAAs), Deans, and Instructors involved in Teacher Education.
During the meeting on April 11, 2024, at Benguet State University, CHED-CAR Director Dr. Demetrio P. Anduyan Jr. announced the launch of the CAREforC initiative, an acronym for Curriculum Amelioration Towards Reading Excellence for Cordilleran Children.
The CAREforC program also aims to work closely with the Department of Education-CAR (DepEd-CAR) to realize the following objectives:
Objective 1: Curriculum Enhancement.
Evaluate and enhance CAR's Teacher Education Programs to incorporate effective reading comprehension strategies, collaborating with DepEd-CAR to align curricula with the needs of students.
Objective 2: Professional Development.
Host workshops for DepEd CAR educators fostering the exchange of expertise and best practices in reading instruction.
Objective 3: Barangay-Based Literacy Program.
Develop a Barangay-Based literacy program focused on reading as an extension program, engaging local communities in promoting literacy and supporting the reading development of Cordilleran children.
Through this initiative, it is hoped that there will be a decrease in the number of children who struggle with reading over time.
RD Demetrio P. Anduyan, Jr. emphasized during his meeting yesterday with the staff of the Regional Office the relevance of synergy in the workplace.
