I visited three schools this week: Lansing Elementary, Aurora Quest K-8, and William Smith High School. Principals at each school had many things to celebrate! As always, the best part was getting into classrooms and seeing our teachers and students in action! Here you see students at Quest practicing their discourse skills in literacy, and in science, timing how long their paper structures support a can of vegetables. Great student engagement!

Vote YES on 5A and 5B for Aurora’s kids without a tax increase! That’s right – no tax increase! Just new schools, increased security, job-skills training, mental health professionals, recruitment and retention of teachers, plus school renovations, repairs and maintenance. Every school benefits!

It’s been 15 years since I retired as principal at Crawford Elementary School. What a fun visit I had there on Thursday receiving hugs from teachers I hired long ago; hearing about the success of their community school model; and taking in their beautiful community-created murals. Thanks to Principal Aubri Dunkin and Assistant Principal Jennifer Biviano for hosting such a great morning!

It was great fun to attend the grand re-opening of the Aurora Public Schools Stadium this morning! And it just happened to be my grandson’s first track meet. Great race, Adam!
I had a great visit at Harmony Ridge P-8! I saw lots of great instruction and lots of student engagement. And the best part? A second grader asked me if I wanted a hug. You bet I did! Thanks to Principal Eric Cohen for being a great host!

The building is deplorable; but evicting the tenants with only six days notice just created at least 66 more unhoused APS kids. Thanks to the fast actions of Aurora Public Schools leadership, these families are receiving services from several teams, including Aurora Mental Health, East Colfax Community Collective, the Welcome Center, Central Language Services, APS Safety and Security, Nutrition Services McKinney-Vento, and the Family Advocacy and Community Engagement team. I am proud to be a part of this great district!

It was a great pleasure to be at Tollgate Elementary School yesterday! I met some staff, visited classrooms, and talked with Principal Shanna Martin about the exciting things that are happening there. Go Timber Wolves!
My Board retreat started off with the smell of fresh cut grass. Love that so much! Thank you lawn and maintenance staff!

Aurora rec centers, programs will be free for teens over summer The city of Aurora has been doubling down on its efforts to reduce youth violence and much of that comes with filling idle time. The We Are Aurora Youth is a program designed to give children a fun and safe place to hang out during school breaks.
