đ Happy Holidays đ We're so thankful for another fantastic year of performances and can't wait to bring to life all of the new and incredible creations we have planned in 2024!

Roulette has really become a home for us in the last few years, and no other 2023 collaboration has grown from the hallâs floorboards quite like the music of Gambian griots Jali Bakary Konteh and Mafu Contehâs! It has been our great pleasure to realize a years-in-the-making musical and cross-cultural project as well as honor their grandfather Alhaji Bai Konteh.
Weâre so excited to breathe life into other multi-year and expansive works in 2024 and we canât do it without your help!

A new message, this time from another one of our fantastic collaborators for the 2024 year: composer and visual artist Lila Meretzky! Weâll be presenting her utterly beautiful hour-long collection of songs drawing on the poetry of early 20th-century Jewish writer Anna Margolin alongside projection design by Camilla Tassi at Roulette in February (with more details on the performance very soon).
As Lila eloquently puts it, weâll be presenting so many artists with supersized dreams in 2024 and we canât do it without you.

This yearâs highlights would be remiss if we didnât include our return to National Sawdust and the three brilliant premieres that went along with it! From Tonia Koâs concerto for bubblewrap to Dan Trueman and CaoimhĂn Ă Raghallaighâs concerto for the hardanger dâamore fiddle, âMidden Findâ (plus having Dan step in at the last minute for a performance thatâs nothing short of gorgeous)!
We plan to premiere so many more goosebump-inducing works in 2024 - and we canât do it without your help! Click here to learn more about how you can support Contemporaneous and the wild dreams of our collaborators: contemporaneous.org/donate24
P.S. Keep an eye out for a recording of âMidden Findâ soon đ

2024 holds some of the most fantastical dream collaborations from artists of all walks of life - and who better to explain those realizations than the collaborators themselves!
Hereâs a quick message from composer Karl Ronneburg who, alongside composer/librettist/performer Grey Grant, created a new âdreamopera,â an abstract show of music, light, and theater sourced from their intimate diaries and life experiences. A work that explores and abstracts idiosyncrasies in all lives!
So many more dreams are pushing their way into this world alongside Karl and Grey â learn more about how you can help them become a reality here at the link in the comments!
The last story in this series for our upcoming Oct 10 show at Roulette is from a fantastic flutist whoâs been performing with us as of late, Yoshi Weinberg:
âSomething about the flute had sparked something within me; my inner diva connected so deeply to something that was deemed so âfeminine.â ⌠I started private lessons with a local teacher at the age of 16, and auditioned for colleges to pursue a performance degree. However, in undergrad I wasnât celebrated as a q***r jewish non-binary flutist, but rather I was stifled, judged, and condemned for being too q***r, too feminine, and too jewish. I fell into a deep depression and wished to quit music altogether by the time I was a second-year in undergrad.
I then discovered the new music community ... Because of the new music community, I have found the q***r family that I had always dreamed of having as a q***r kid in a conservative Minnesotan farm town. I have made life-long friends through the collaborations I have developed over the years as a freelance musician. My friends in Contemporaneous, as well as in my own ensemble InfraSound have given me the opportunity to be myself and to find people who respect not only how I play, but how I express my gender and q***rness. Music is my everything. Music is my blood, my breath, my heart, and it is most importantly my q***r family.â

Our second story centered around interwoven connections to music comes from another Contemporaneous violinist (and Jack of All Performance Groups) Josh Henderson!
"I think I associate the most musical of moments with my family on the time spent together going to and from many places and wearing out many-a-cassette tape in the process.â

In anticipation of our upcoming Oct 10 show with Jali Bakary Konteh and Mafu Conteh, weâve asked a few folks to share how music connects them to their families! Today, Contemporaneous violinist Sabrina Tabby shares her short story on how CDs connected her to her parents:
âGershwin Classics, The Kreisler Album, Beatles Greatest Hits. Just a few of the CDs my parents liked that we had on repeat in our car growing up. Mom adored classical music, Dad, classic rock. My earliest musical memories are of scatting our way through the entirety of Rhapsody in Blue in multiple-part harmony/counterpoint with my sisters, swooning over the charming nostalgia of Kreislerâs violin pieces, and belting out tunes by one of the greatest bands that ever lived! Whether you loved it or loathed it, we have to admit: the music our parents played for us before we were old enough to know any better shaped who we are."

Today weâre spotlighting Tonia Ko, composer and soloist of a brand new piece for amplified bubble wrap! 𫧠𫧠đŤ§
Tonia Ko was born in Hong Kong in 1988 and grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii. She earned a B.M. with Highest Distinction from the Eastman School of Music and an M.M. from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She holds a D.M.A. from Cornell University, where she studied with Steven Stucky and Kevin Ernste. Her practice has been enriched by further studies at the Tanglewood Music Center and Royaumont AcadĂŠmie Voix Nouvelles. She was the 2018-19 Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Chicagoâs Center for Contemporary Composition. Upon relocating to the United Kingdom, she served as 2019-20 Honorary Research Fellow at City, University of London, and was appointed Lecturer in Composition at Royal Holloway, University of London in 2020.â¨â¨In the attempt to follow aural, visual, and tactile instincts in a holistic way, Ko mediates between the identities of the composer, sound artist, and improviser. This has sparked interdisciplinary connectionsâ most prominently âBreath, Containedâ, an ongoing project using bubble wrap as a canvas for both art and sound. As a bubble wrap virtuoso, she has performed with other noted improvisers at CafĂŠ OTO, Hundred Years Gallery, and the Ear Taxi Festival. She received a 2021 Koussevitzky Commission to compose a concerto for bubble wrap and chamber orchestra, featuring her as a soloist with Contemporaneous.
We hope you can come see this incredibly unique concert this Wednesday! Tix and more info in our linktree!

Meet CaoimhĂn Ă Raghallaigh, one of our performers for next weekâs concert, DREAMS OF ONE/ALL!
CaoimhĂn Ă Raghallaigh (pronounced Kwee-Veen Oh Rye-Alla) makes music on a 10-string fiddle called the hardanger d'amore, and travels the world as a solo musician, in duos with Dan Trueman, Mick O'Brien and Brendan Begley, and as a member of The Gloaming and This is How we Fly.
Ă Raghallaigh has performed in a wide variety of locales, including some of the worldâs biggest stages (Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall) but he prefers smaller more intimate venues with friends. He currently resides in Dublin, Ireland.
Ă Raghallaigh features in seventeen recordings ranging from traditional fiddling to more experimental and avant-garde. To quote him , he enjoys both âplaying the old music that I love, and exploring the region where traditional music begins to disintegrate.â Hear him perform Dan Truemanâs âMidden Findâ on the hardanger dâamore at National Sawdust next Wednesday, June 14! Dreams of One/All reimagines the idea of what a âconcertoâ can be through three cutting-edge premieres. Composed by Donnacha Dennehy, Tonia Ko, and Dan Trueman, these new works expand the relationship between a solo instrument and a large ensemble. Dennehy writes a startling, powerful piece for piano, performed by Eliza McCarthy, presented in its US premiere on this show. Ko pens a solo for amplified bubble wrap, an innovative instrument she invented and plays, which will see its world premiere after winning the Koussevitzky Commissioning Prize. And Dan Trueman teams up with legendary Irish fiddler CaoimhĂn Ă Raghallaigh on a piece commissioned by Contemporaneous for 10-string fiddle that brings the history of Irish traditional music in dialogue with the orchestra. Performed by the 23-person ensemble, these new works represent a culmination of many years of collaboration, and open up new futures for the concerto form.â
As part of Contemporaneous's continued commitment to ensuring every show we develop is accessible to all people, free tickets are available for Dreams of One/All to anyone who needs them. Please contact [email protected] to claim a free ticket(s).

Still feeling euphoric after the insanity that was Saturday's performance of Stranger Love! The journey of this piece has been in a lot of ways the journey of Contemporaneous - so many things that define our group and what it stands for stemmed from the creation of Stranger Love 11 years ago. We are so thankful to the LA Philharmonic for hosting us and helping us through every step of the way. To the fantastic creative team: Lileana, Chris, Matt, Hannah, Yi, and Kaye, thank you so much for creating such a visually spectacular show for the cosmic scale of this opera! To the cast of singers and dancers - you all were brilliant and beautiful! Thanks for making all that music with us!!
