Bazi Profiler
A Free Coaching page on Chinese Bazi Profiling.
In the Bazi profiling process, apart from the main structure, we also need to map out the 10 -years luck cycle for the subject in question. The luck cycles are also in the form of Heavenly stems and Earthly branches. Each set of Heavenly stem and Earthly branch represent the luck of the subject for a 10-years period (here we call BIG LUCK). Before we delve into the mapping of 10-years Luck cycle, we need to understand how the Heaven Stems and Earthly Branches are combined. Starting with Yang Wood RAT(甲子) follow by Yin Wood OX(乙丑)and so on in forward sequence till we reach Yin Water PIG(癸水) total of sixty combinations.
To map out the 10 years luck cycle, we have to look at the Year Pillar and the Gender of our subject. If a Male subject born in a Yang element year, we will move in forward taking reference from the month pillar Earthly branch If he was born in a Yin Year then we will move in reverse sequence. For a Female subject is the opposite; Female born in Yang year reverse and Female born in Yin year forward. Remember we take reference from the Month Pillar Earthly Branch when mapping the 10 year luck cycle sequence.
Next we need to determine the Age when the Luck cycle starts. We calculate the number of days and hour-period from the Solar Term. For Forward sequence subject we take the Day and Time of birth and count the days forward to the next Solar Term. We would use the Chinese Almanac to check on the next Solar Term. For reverse sequence we would check on the previous Solar Term.
Every complete count of 3 days will be taken as 1 year, each day taken as 120 days and each hour period (2 hours) taken as 10 days. For example of a Male born in Yang year (forward sequence) and if the Day/time of birth is 3 days and 1 hour-period from the next Solar Term then the subject will starts his Luck cycle from 1 year plus 10 days of Age(1year old plus 10 days) This seems to be a handful for you. This is the method of deriving the 10 years Luck cycles during the early days.
Nowadays with the help of computer applications it is much easier for most us. When you are using any computer application to map out the Bazi structure, you will need to check on the 10 years luck cycle and the luck start age.
What are the relation of the Bazi structure to a person’s life? Till next time we will discuss more on the various relationships of the 10 Gods to a person’s life. Happy learning.
For the first topic today we shall look at how we can easily remember the hidden elements of the Earthly Branches. Take our 4x4 grid. The left side is EAST or SPRING, the Rightside is WEST or AUTUMN. TOP is SOUTH or SUMMER and bottom is NORTH or WINTER. Starting from 寅(TIGER) at the left most bottom corner. Each season have 3 months. Each corner will be the beginning of the season.
The Corners
1. The corner months are all like mountains which is YANG nature so the hidden elements are all YANG nature. There are 3 hidden elements in each of them. Except for HAI(PIG) with only 2 hidden elements.
2. All have YANG EARTH except for HAI(PIG) does not contain the EARTH element.
3. Accordingly they are the start of a season, they will have the YANG nature of the associated elements; YIN(TIGER) beginning of SPRING when trees started to grow, so it has YANG WOOD. You can also says EAST is for WOOD. SI(SNAKE) is SUMMER and SOUTH is YANG FIRE. SHEN(MONKEY) is AUTUMN and WEST one of the hidden element is YANG METAL. Lastly HAI(PIG) is WINTER and NORTH, has YANG WATER hidden.
4. The next hidden element will be the YANG nature of the following season.
YIN(TIGER) - YANG EARTH. YANG WOOD, YANG FIRE.
SI(SNAKE) - YANG EARTH, YANG FIRE, YANG METAL.
SHEN(MONKEY) - YANG EARTH, YANG METAL, YANG WATER.
HAI(PIG) - YANG WATER, YANG WOOD.
The 4 MID Season or the 4 CARDINAL points.
The mid season months contain a Single YIN nature element each except for WU(HORSE) which has 2 hidden YIN elements.
MAO(RABBIT) - EAST - YIN WOOD
WU(HORSE) - SOUTH - YIN FIRE & YIN EARTH
YOU(ROOSTER) - WEST - YIN METAL
ZI(RAT) - NORTH - YIN WATER
The 4 STORAGE
After the 4 Mid Seasons come the 4 STORAGE. They are CHEN(Dragon), WEI(Goat), XU(Dog) and CHOU(Ox). The four STORAGE has 3 elements each. 1. they have the EARTH element of their Nature self. 2. They have the YIN element if their season. 3. They have the YIN element of the previous season which they will keep in Storage.
CHEN(Dragon) 5th in Zodiac will have YANG EARTH as its main element, YIN WOOD and YIN WATER Storage.
WEI(Goat) 8th Lin Zodiac will have YIN EARTH as its main element, YIN FIRE and YIN WOOD Storage.
XU(Dog) 11th in the Zodiac will have YANG EARTH, YIN METAL and YIN FIRE Storage.
Lastly CHOU(OX) 2nd in the Zodiac will have YIN EARTH, YIN WATER and YIN METAL Storage.
It is good to be able to memorise the order of the Chinese Zodiac.
Next, let’s discuss the BAZI structure. The structure consists of 4 pillars, namely the Year, Month, Day and Time. Each pillar has 2 Characters, the Upper being the Heavenly Stem and the Bottom being the Earthly Branch. For a given Date and Time of birth, we can easily map out the Bazi. Bearing in mind, the Chinese Zodiac year change occurs on 4th or 5th February each year on the day of Li Chun (立春) not on the Chinese New Year day.
In the past without computer, we use to check with the Chinese Almanac.
There are 60 Combinations each pillar.. The Chinese Zodiac Combinations starting with YANG WOOD RAT(甲子)all the way to YIN WATER PIG(癸亥).
The first month of each Zodiac Year is YIN(TIGER) month all the way till CHOU(OX) month, before the next LI CHUN(立春).
It is good practise to have a Chinese Almanac at hand. You will need to check the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch for the Day Pillar.
The Day pillar Heavenly Stem is where we determine the Daymaster l(DM) of the person.
For time period ZI(RAT) hour starts at 11pm of the previous day to 1am. And we continue to count the time periods. Every time period consists of 2 hours, for a 24 hours day, there are 12 time periods each following the order of the Chinese Zodiac character.
This was how Bazi structure Being mapped out in the past before IT transformation. There are many Bazi Calculators out there from the internet which you can use to help you with the mapping. There are also comprehensive Bazi App which you can use.
I will be uploading a reference sheet once we completed the Basics.
Next post we shall be touching on the 10 year LUCK cycles and how to map them. Till then stay tune.
In my previous post, we discuss the interactions of the Earthly Branches. Today we shall learn how to easily remember them.
First draw a 4 by 4 square grid and line up the Earthly Branches along the edge squares. We will write YIN(TIGER) at the lower left corner .square. Continue clockwise and write each consecutive Earthly Branch in 1 square each till we are have all twelve Earthly Branches filling up all the edge squares. It should looks something like in the picture. Superimposed the grid to your right fingers. If you have notice some practitioner tapping and counting with his fingers; this is one of the method to check the interactions between Earthly Branches.
The red lines cross like an ‘X’ show the inter-clashes. The green horizontal lines show the inter-alliances and the blue vertical lines show the inter-punishing.
Next we shall discuss the hidden element/s in the Earthly Branches i.e the 5 elements of the Heavenly Stems.
Main element - Each Earthly Branch has an element which will take its form as the Main element. Looking back at the grid, the left side is the East( or Spring) and is represented by WOOD. The top portion is South( or Summer) represented by FIRE. The right side is West( or Autumn) represented by METAL. And lastly the bottom side is North( or Winter) represented by WATER.
The list below are the hidden elements in each Earthly Branch.
YIN(TIGER) - Yang Wood, Yang Fire and Yang Earth
MAO(RABBIT) - Yin Wood
CHEN(DRAGON) - Yang Earth, Yin wood, Yin Water
SI(SNAKE) - Yang Fire, Yang Metal, Yang Earth
WU(HORSE) - Yin Fire, Yin Earth
WEI(GOAT) - Yin Earth, Yin Fire, Yin Wood
SHEN(MONKEY) - Yang Metal, Yang Earth, Yang Water.
YOU(ROOSTER) - Yin Metal
HAI(PIG) - Yang Water, Yang Wood.
ZI(RAT) - Yin Water
CHOU(OX) - Yin Earth, Yin Water, Yin Metal.
In my next post, we will discuss how we can easily remember the hidden elements in the Earthly Branches.
At the same time we shall learn “How to form a Bazi structure using the Date and time of Birth?”,”How to read a Bazi structure and the considerations?” Till next time stay tuned.
As we have learn the interactions between elements in the Heavenly Stems. The Earthly Branches also have their fair share of interactions. There are clashes, punishment, alliance and grouping between them.
Clashes : There are 6 pairs of clashes among the 12 Zodiac characters. Starting with the RAT(Zi) we count 6 down i.e. HORSE(Wu). RAT and HORSE will clash with each other. Next the OX(Chou), 6 down i.e. GOAT(Wei). They will clash with each other. Then we have TIGER(Yin) with MONKEY(Shen), RABBIT(Mao) with ROOSTER(You), DRAGON(Chen) with DOG(Xu) and lastly SNAKE(Si) with PIG(Hai).
Alliance : There are also 6 pairs of Allies. They are RAT(Zi) with OX(Chou), TIGER(Yin) with PIG(Hai), RABBIT(Mao) with DOG(Xu), DRAGON(Chen) with ROOSTER(You), SNAKE(Si) with MONKEY(Shen), and HORSE(Wu) with GOAT(Wei).
Punishing : There is self punishment and also friendly punishment. When your Bazi has 2 of the same Earthly Branch, there is a tendency of self punishment(自刑). The friendly punishment pairs are RAT with GOAT, OX with HORSE, TIGER with SNAKE, RABBIT with DRAGON, MONKEY with PIG, and ROOSTER with DOG.
Three Allies(三合) Grouping
This is when 3 Earthly Branches combine with each other to form an alliance. (Hint: Count 4 apart).
RAT - DRAGON - MONKEY
OX - SNAKE - ROOSTER
TIGER - HORSE - DOG
RABBIT - GOAT - PIG
All the above interactions of the Earthly Branches will occur when they are timely.
Timely means when during certain luck cycles the year, month or even the day and time will cause them to happen.
How to memorise these interactions? I will be showing all in my next post. So stay tune.
Wishing all a Happy Mid Autumn Festival.
Today we shall be discussing the Earthly Branches. These are the 4 characters at the bottom of a Bazi structure. Initially the Characters used to represent time period of a day. Each period has 2 hours, hence a 24 hours day gives us 12 time periods.
子时 Zi - 11pm to 1am (next day).
丑时 Chou - 1am to 3am
寅时 Yin - 3am to 5am
卯时 Mao - 5am to 7am
辰时 Chen - 7am to 9am
已时 Si - 9am to 11am
午时 Wu - 11am to 1pm
未时 Wei - 1pm to 3pm
申时 Shen - 3pm to 5pm
酉时 You - 5pm to 7pm
戍时 Xu - 7pm to 9pm
亥时 Hai - 9pm to 11pm
Note that Zi time period stretch across 2 days.
Later on the Chinese Zodiac was formed and a character was allocated to each of the animals of the Zodiac in the same order starting with the RAT(Zi), OX(Chou), TIGER(Yin), RABBIT(Mao), DRAGON(Chen), SNAKE(Si), HORSE(Wu), GOAT(Wei), MONKEY(Shen), ROOSTER(You), DOG(Xu) and PIG(Hai) each takes control over a year.
For example of a Bazi Structure of someone born on 4th February 2022 5am.
Year Pillar: 壬寅 Ren Yin
Month Pillar: 壬寅 Ren Yin
Day Pillar: 戊子Wu Zi
Time Pillar: 乙卯 Yi Mao
We can state that the subject is born in the Year of Yin(TIGER), Month of Yin(TIGER), Day of Zi(RAT) and Time of Mao(RABBIT). It is good to memorise the sequence of the Zodiac Characters or Animals. Of course you can reference the cheat sheet from my previous post. However it is good practice to memorise them (at least the cheat sheet). It will help you in your interpretation of the Bazi structure smoothly. Next?
How do the Zodiac animals interact with each other? What is hidden in the Earthly Branches? We shall discuss in my next post. Have a good week.
What are the 10 Gods in Bazi profiling? They are not religious Gods. Just named so as to help to differentiate the interaction of the various elements (those we previously discussed) in relation to the Day Master. The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem element of the subject’s day of birth as can be viewed from the Day Pillar. Taking the following Bazi mapping of a Female subject (Note: the Gender of the subject is crucial to Bazi Mapping).
Year Pillar: 壬寅 Ren Yin
Month Pillar: 壬寅 Ren Yin
Day Pillar: 戊子Wu Zi
Time Pillar: 甲寅 Jia Yin
We can state that this subject Day Master is Yang Earth (戊). Based on various interactions of the Elements, Fire support Earth, Earth produce Metal, Earth can control Water, Wood can stop Earth from movement and lastly Earth will enrich Earth.
Below are the 10 Gods and the corresponding elements in relation to the subject Day master.
Resources / Support by - Fire(火)
Produces / Support to - Metal(金)
Control - Water(水)
Destroy / Control by - Wood(木)
And Earth will be Self Element(土)
Each Element has 2 defined Gods thus they make up to 10. Bear in mind that they are interactions to the subject’s Day Master element, in this case Yang Earth. Here I defined the names as a direct translation from the Chinese name and may not seems logical in English, after all Bazi is an Ancient Chinese metaphysics.
Resources, there is Direct Resources 正印 and Indirect 偏印。
Produces there is 食神(Eating God) and 伤官(Hurting Officer).
Control we have the 正财(Rightful Wealth) and 偏财(Windfall).
Destroyer/Control by we have 正官(Officer of Authority) and 偏官/七杀(Bias Officer of Authority / seven killings).
Self Element we have the 比肩(Comparative Shoulders or Siblings, Friendly forces, and Peers) and 劫财(Robbing Wealth).
You may come across slightly different names for some of the “Gods” and also some terminology from many Bazi sites. The most important is to understand the interactions among them.
Some sites used H to represent Heavenly Stem and E for Earthly Branch and initial to notate the 10 Gods. For examples 甲(Jia) - Yang WOOD (H1). 乙(Yi) - Yin WOOD (H2)…………… 癸(Gui) - Yin WATER(H10).
10 Gods example notations are:
IR - 偏印,臬神 Indirect Resource
DR - 正印 Direct Resource
RW - 比劫,劫财 Robbing Wealth
F - 比,Siblings, Friends
W - 正财,Wealth
IW - 偏财,Windfall, Indirect Wealth
HO - 伤官,Hurting Officer
EG - 食神,Eating God
DO - 正官,Direct Officer,Authority
7K - 偏官,七杀,Bias Officer, 7 Killings
See the attached drawing for a clear understanding of the interactions.
Next up will be the Earthly Branches and their interactions.
How does the elements interact with one another? Let’s begin with how element supports or produce another element. Starting with WOOD. As you know WOOD supports FIRE (here we will use the verb ”produce”). In turn FIRE will produce EARTH. EARTH in turn produces METAL, METAL produce WATER, finally WATER supports WOOD.
How element destroys another element? WOOD can block EARTH from erosion. EARTH can be use to prevent WATER from flooding. WATER is use to kill FIRE. FIRE can destroy METAL and finally METAL is use to destroy WOOD. (Here we use the term “control” and/or “destroy”).
Point to note YANG/YIN, YANG/YANG and YIN/YIN counter actions can give different outcome.Sometimes the YANG element though control or destroy another YIN element may change or “combine” to form a different element. The following are possible combinations Yang Fire destroy Yin Metal combine to form Water. Yang Metal with Yin Wood form Metal, Yang Water with Yin Fire form Wood. Yang Earth with Yin Water form Fire and lastly Yang Wood with Yin Earth form Earth alone. YANG/YANG clash is more harsh than YIN/YIN clash.
Next up we will discuss the 10 GODS. Stay tuned.

What is Bazi (translated as Eight Characters)? You may ask. Some of us may have read or consulted some websites regarding their Bazi readings. Bazi is the ancient Chinese astrology that map a person’s profile according to his or her date and time of birth. Bazi is best described as the “Four Pillars of Destiny”. Each Pillar consists of two characters and each pillar represent the Year, Month, Day and Time. The first character of each pillar is called the Heavenly Stem and the second character is called the Earthly branch.
The Heavenly Stems represent the 5 pairs of elements namely Wood. Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. While the Earthly Branches represent the 4 Seasons; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
The Heavenly stems are notated by 甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸 10 characters (pronounce as Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui.) and the Earthly Branches uses the Characters representing the Chinese Zodiac. There are a total of 60 Heavenly Stems to Earthly Branch combinations. (See follow up charts Reference from Wikipedia).
This is the fundamental of Bazi that one can read up in Wikipedia or some Chinese FengShui and Astrology websites.
You can even get a free basic reading from Apps available in Apple Or Play Store.
Many consulted Bazi Practitioners to understand more of their profile, the 10-years luck cycles, the interaction of their Bazi with the current year, compatibility with partners, compatibility with career. Also Harmony within oneself, family, siblings etc. And the list goes on….. once I have a fellow Fengshui practitioner remarked “Bazi is easy to learn but it takes time to master”.
I will not delve into the Basic Fundamental of Bazi and how Bazi is map out. You can easily download some Mobile apps and map out the Bazi with the individual’s date and time of birth.
On the time of Birth, one can take in the actual time of birth or you can take reference to UTC+8. (UTC +8 is Beijing time zone). Map out both time zone and counter check both readings with your subject in question.
Before we proceed further, we need to take note of the notation and the representation of each of the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch.
In the formation of the Universe, all matters have a Yin and Yang force that best describes its characteristics. We will use the Yang as the Bigger (Stronger/Harder) element and Ying as compared to be the Smaller (Weaker/Softer) element.
甲 Jia -Yang Wood
乙 Yi -Yin Wood
丙 Bing - Yang Fire
丁 Ding - Yin Fire
戊 Wu - Yang Earth
己 Ji. - Yin Earth
庚 Geng - Yang Metal
辛 Xin - Yin Metal
壬 Ren - Yang Water
癸 Gui - Yin Water
How are the various elements representatives to our daily life?
Yang Wood can be representative of a tall tree with thick trunk, and Yin Wood as a bush or shrub, soft stem. Yang Fire is like the Sun and Yin Fire as a lighted fire. Yang Earth will be like dry earth like earth surface and Yin Earth will be the mud or wet earth. Yang Metal is the like to an axe and Yin Metal to a carving knife. Yang Water is like the Ocean and Yin Water like a pond.
The Chinese character representing the Chinese Zodiac were used to represent the Earthly Branches. You can check out the follow up chart.
Next up we will discuss on the interaction between the various elements. Stay tune!
Way back in 2017 when I started to post Dr Oliver Tan’s “Power of Numbers”. I sincerely hope that my readers will benefit from it as I have. For the past 2 and the half years, when we are struck my the Covid19 pandemic, I view this an opportunity for us to practice more on the Basics. As I had said in my previous posts, it is the way you interpret and communicate to the subject person that will affect your profiling skill. Of course there are more to the Basics numbers shown which Dr Oliver Tan had taught me, for which I am not delivering here as I take that as “proprietary” materials.
Any way, I do hope my readers will continue to work on the Basics and practice to get a feel of the Power of Numbers.
Next up will be lessons on Bazi (八字), the ancient Chinese Astrology reading of a person’s destiny based on the Day and time he was born.
Stay tuned.
