✏️ Did you know today is National Pencil Day?

Known to have originated in the 16th century when graphite was discovered, pencils are one of the first writing tools.

On March 30, 1958 the modern pencil was patented, and so today is deemed National Pencil Day.

One of my first teaching jobs was in a first grade class in the inner city. I learned quickly that homework was often not completed because many of my students did not have access to basic writing utensils at home.

📚Today is Read Across America Day! The event takes place on March 2nd each year, which is also Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

During Read Across America, kids and adults can participate in fun activities like book readings, writing contests, and more.

Schools across the country also have special classes and events dedicated to encouraging kids to read.

Reading is a great way to explore new worlds, develop language skills, and gain new perspectives.

🎧A shout out to last night’s Grammy Awards show. The tribute to 50 years of hip hop had me smiling from beginning to end. Did you watch it? What was your favorite moment of the night?

February is Black History Month and was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States.

February was chosen in honor of Abraham Lincoln (born February 12), who issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and African American abolitionist, author, and orator Frederick Douglass (born February 14).

As a white small business owner, I realize Black History month is not about me, but I can do my part in shining my little light on the accounts I enjoy following and supporting:

1. Support black owned businesses.
2. Learn about noteworthy black figures and their contributions.

3. Donate to charities that support anti-racism equity and equality.



4. Purchase, read, and share books by black authors.
Bluest Eye by is one of my personal favorites and made a huge impact on me in college.

💫 Happy 2023! (Can I still say that halfway into January?)

It was a whirlwind of a holiday season for The Note House, and as grateful as I feel for having received so many orders, I am also just as grateful to have some spare time on my hands now that it’s over! The ebb and flow of running a small business is just that, and I am able to embrace the changes as they come.

My Etsy shop has remained a constant part of my business and for that I am thankful, but I am especially proud to say that my dot com has grown by 66% from 2021 to 2022. Etsy is wonderful for its built-in traffic, but owning a website is just the opposite, so I will continue to work on growing and driving traffic there.

Democracy is on the ballot more than ever before. Please consider which of your local candidates will fight for your rights and which ones want to take them away, and vote accordingly.

➡️ If you are a first-time voter the process can feel overwhelming. Vote.org can help. There you can quickly check your voter registration, find your polling location, and preview who is on your ballot.

➡️ Check your state’s requirements to be sure you have the proper form(s) of ID. Rules vary by state.

➡️ In many states it is illegal to wear “politically motivated” clothing within a certain distance of the polls. Again, check your state’s rules.

➡️ If applicable, know your school board candidates and their platforms. That will be a nonpartisan section toward the end of the ballot. Your candidates will not be automatically selected if you vote straight ticket.
