Hart : TODAY IS YARMOUTH'S 260th BIRTHDAY!!
Yarmouth was founded on June 9, 1761 when a ship carrying three families arrived from Sandwich, Massachusetts. The ship carried the families of Sealed Landers, Ebenezer Ellis, and Moses Perry. Many relatives of these original settlers still live in the area.
Happy Birthday Yarmouth!!💙🎂🎉🎉🎉
This Poem By Kevin vallillee Tells The Story .
( My Keespongwitk Home )
"Keespongwitk" meaning "Lands end" the Mi'kmaq, had made it their place,
they say that the Viking Leif Erickson, may have met them there, face to face,
it is quite a trek to get to the place of the south western peninsula tip,
many who came here before us, they would say it was well worth the trip,
Samuel de Chaplain in 1604 came and named it in French, Cap-Fourchu,
a fishing settlement it then came to be, though its name would change again soon
In 1812, deep in Overton, they say that the Runic was found,
some thought it was carved by Erickson, others say it was naturally sound,
The Seven years War brought the New England Planters of 1759,
They came here and named the town Yarmouth, the present name still at this time,
Planters were settlers that left Massachusetts, named us Yarmouth to remind them of home,
the settlers of Sandwich came two years later, the town's Founding, now legally known,
The Grand Pre Acadians returned from their exile, and brought our new town alive,
Then many of the United Empire Loyalists arrived in late 1785,
throughout the time of the nineteenth century, she became a major shipbuilding town,
we registered more tonnage per capita, it was the most in the world to be found,
four years before, Ericsonn's patent, of a screw propeller he made claimed his fame,
John patch, a Yarmouth Sea Captain's son, had developed one just the same,
Patch was unsuccessful of his patent that year, but got one in '49,
he never got rich, and in '61, he died without making a dime,
As shipbuilding stopped, steel came on top, and the railways then soon began,
Western Counties Railway was locally owned and from Yarmouth to Digby she ran,
We merged with Dominion, which we called D.A.R., soon more of the province we'd see,
The Halifax & Southwestern Railway began, now rail on the south side would be,
The steamships declined from our ports to the U.S., the rails were removed out in stages,
they started uplifting in 1982, by 1990 they were ripped out like pages,
Believe it or not, tourism began, with Loran Ellis Baker and his Ship Company,
back in 1880, it was important, and today, still an industry we need,
Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, it is quite a town, and it's been through a lot as of late,
The Natives remain, the Acadians have stayed and the rest of the people are great,
One thing we'll be, is tied to the sea, it still gives us industry to live,
As time marches on, we'll carry on, because Yarmouth has much more to give....
