On May 14th the Academic Advisor Professor Irene Lemos invited to tea in her beautiful garden the Chair Dr Zetta Theodoropoulou Polychroniadis, the Vice-Chairman Prof. Panos Arvanitakis and the GACUK scholars studying at Oxford, Dimitris Karampas, Myrto Kokkalia and Philippos Roussos. This was a very pleasant gathering after two years of isolation. A lovely opportunity to meet each other since all our events were online. Hopefully we shall all get together on 29th November at King’s College London to pay a tribute to our beloved Founder, Matti Egon
On May 3, 2022, our alumnus, Ioannis (Yangos) Chalazonitis, participated in the encounter “Connecting past and future. The impact of New Technologies on Archaeology and Heritage Conservation”, which formed a part of the State Visit of Their Majesties, the King and Queen of the Belgians to the Hellenic Republic. His presentation was titled “From 2D to 3D. Itanos: Making Archaeology Accessible”.
Dr. Chalazonitis is an FRS-FNRS post-doctoral researcher in the Centre de Recherches en Archéologie et Patrimoine of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. His research primarily focuses on the north-eastern Aegean, and specifically the region of modern-day Kavala and Serres, with an emphasis on burial customs of the archaic period and on the expression of hierarchical social structures and elite identities in funerary contexts.
Since 2021, Dr. Chalazonitis has participated in the newest programme of excavations in ancient Itanos (eastern Crete), under the overall direction of Professors Athéna Tsingarida and Didier Viviers. The site is one of the most significant coastal sites in Crete, and its continued excavation under the auspices of the ULB, the Belgian School of Athens, and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Lasithi is anticipated to provide new insights into the historical development of the island during its sixteen centuries of occupation (9th century BCE – 7th century CE).

About us
The Greek Archaeological Committee UK (GACUK) was founded in London in the autumn of 1986 on the 150th anniversary of the Greek Archaeological Society at Athens, with which it is associated. GACUK was founded by Mrs Matti Egon-Xylas who served as Chairman from 1986 until 1993 and from 2003 until 2013. In addition to its Founding, Ordinary (including Corporate) and Corresponding members, GACUK benefits from the support of some seventeen Patrons, most of whom are distinguished British Academics.
Through providing scholarships, we enable students of Greek and Cypriot origin to continue with their postgraduate studies in Greek archaeology in the UK.
