The Courtyard on the corner of Daubney Street and Grimsby Road - Next door to Liondale Villa stood The Gables a large house with outbuildings that included stables and an open cobbled courtyard reached well into and beyond the Daubney Street corner. Later The Gables became part of DB Ramsdens Cash and Carry, before it and the Liondale Villa were both (very sadly) demolished to make for the Courtyard Apartment block of flats.
The Black Swan was situated at 1-3 Victoria Street.
Known locally as the 'Mucky Duck' it was said to have been built in 1699. It was also a Hotel, and a very busy coaching house. In 1814 William Bates, landlord of the Black Swan died, he was the said to be the"oldest landlord in the town". In 1818 Francis Brown was landlord then Levi Lee took over he was to stay for over twenty years until he died in 1863. Many other landlords were in charge including E. Smith, M. Lusby, Edwin Beckett, John Jolland, Robert Starling, Thomas Staff, Henry Rowell, H.P. Leonard, Percy Smith, Joseph Pratt, Isaac Robinson the last one being Dennis Christopher in 1967. The pub was demolished in the late 1960's to make way for a new shopping precinct
