Termites in Costa Rica.
Termites can be found across most of the country, here we found three main groups, subterranean termites, damp wood termites and dry wood termites. They fed on dead trees and other elements with cellulose with the task of convert dead wood into organic substance. Don’t difference between dead trees and wood present at home, often infesting buildings damaging wood panels, drywall panels, furniture, boxes… materials made of plant fibers. They travel subterranean and even concrete or brick are not barrier for them to access to a building.

Subterranean termites do not damage live trees and like to feed on soft wood; Damp wood termites like to live and feed in very moist wood. These insects travel distances from up to 120 meters from the nest to rotting trees or any cellulose source where they search for food using pheromones to mark the way. The main difference with dry wood termites is that they do not go for soft, moist wood as most termites do. Instead, they eat across the grain of the wood, which can be very dangerous and damaging to structures.

It is recommended before a new house or building is constructed to do a preventive termite treatment for the soil and nearby wood, don’t have wood lying around the house, trim the branches so there is no contact between the trees and the construction and treat as soon you see early signs of termite infestation in the building to avoid it grows more and bigger damage.
