Next week I’ll be facilitating a modular synth and singing bowl sound journey.
Send me a DM if you’d like to attend but are not part of the ASU community (I’ll need to help you get in the building).
I’m thrilled to be performing this Saturday at Solar Culture in Tucson, alongside dark ambient genius Caldon Glover. The last time I played at Solar Culture was early 2020, so I’m very excited for this reunion!
The first ever ASU Ambient Rave is next week! This is something a group of my students have been wanting to do for a while. We envision this being a recurring event, and hope to do many more in the near future.
Recent action shots.

Playing the PHX Xfest tomorrow night with Slender Loris and friends. Come get weird with us!!!!
The Phoenix Synthesizer Festival is in-person this year!!! More info at LINK IN BIO

I’m very happy to announce I am now a Max Certified Trainer!!! Find out more about Max Certified Trainers at the link in my bio.
I’m very excited to be performing in the next Ambient Lounge curated by the legendary Steve Roach. A big thank you to Steve for inviting me to be a part of this.

If middle aged Obi-Wan wasn’t stuck babysitting his friends’ kids he’d probably be making music like this and doing Jedi magic tricks for Jawa children.
Made a morphing wavetable oscillator in Max that uses Serum wavetables. Made possible by using the new table~ object and pattrstorage.
Some really great new features in the new version of Phaseplant, including super long LFO lengths (thank you, 🙏), a wavetable LFO 🤯, and modulators with trigger inputs, which I’m using here in this Krell-ish patch.

Grades are in. Summer is here! Sweet freedom!!! Michael McDonald is super hyped this year!
Finally digging into Max 8.3
Tons of great new features. One of my new favorite objects is mc.shape~, which I’m using in this patch to set varying amplitude envelope lengths for each harmonic in an additive synth.
Going through some material for my set at the Trunkspace tomorrow night. My rhythm generator Max patch is sequencing the Octatrack and Nord modular (patch available for dl from the Cycling74 blog). This live rig is set up to allow for improvisation within a pre-planned framework. Throughout the performance musical patterns are generated in the Max patch, and permutations of those patterns can be explored and morphed into completely new musical ideas. It’s like going fishing, catching a big fish, and letting it take you for a swim.
When a class lesson turns into a dope patch.
Working on some music for the ASU Popular Music End of Year Celebration. Free show!!! April 12th 6pm at the Crescent Ballroom.
Have you ever wanted to build your own custom software instruments and audio effects? Learn how in the Programming with Max class I’ll be teaching at ASU this Summer. This class is open to everyone, even if you’re not an ASU student. DM me for details.
(P.S. this class can count as a general studies CS credit for ASU students)
Want to learn how to program modular synths and make modular synth music? Sign up for the Modular Systems class I’ll be teaching at ASU this Summer. This class is open to everyone, even if you’re not an ASU student. DM me for details.

Animation from NodeBox processed in Jitter. Audio from Ableton and Max for Live.

Still feeling all thumbs with programming the Machinedrum, but definitely appreciating the potential to create some amazing things with this classic machine. Here I’m using MIDI notes in the Octatrack to trigger patterns on the Machinedrum (yeah, you can do that…basically program changes per step 🤯). The OT is also processing and gating audio from the MD.

Doing the Mark Fell/ Gabor Lazar thing with Max and Razor, because it’s such a damn cool sound. Also, I forgot how amazing Razor is!
My students were feeling Lydian, so we made this VCV Rack Lydian thing in class
A simple chord generator in Max using a coll to store lists of pitch intervals. Next step: finding some way to program inversions without hard coding those into the coll.

Dusting off the old modular.
Animation made in NodeBox, processed in Lumen, additional compositing in DaVinci Resolve.
"True Love Lies Expiring,” a collaboration with Memo Gutierrez ( ) and Daniella Napolitano ( ), On display at the ASU Harry Wood Gallery. Laser engraved intaglio print, cut paper, sound amplified through a copper plate, 2021
A note on process:
The digital images were rendered using a generative process. This process begins in the visual programming language, NodeBox. In NodeBox a variety of complex shapes and patterns can be created by varying the initial conditions in algorithms used to generate images. These images from NodeBox were then brought into Adobe Illustrator as custom brushes. The brushes are then applied to simple shapes, or sometimes to the original images generated in NodeBox, producing a chaotic, fractal-like effect. The entire process allows for the generation of multiple images which differ in overall appearance, yet share a common DNA.
We began the print with a digital image file and, using a laser, transferred it onto a copper plate. Rather than print an edition of identical images, we wanted to remain faithful to the digital generative process. After etching and printing the plate, we laser engraved the evolutions that stemmed from the original image on top of the print to create our varied edition.
It’s fantastic that we live in a era where music like this can be made using only a pocket computer.
Been a minute since I’ve made a Nord modular patch. Patch notes: mostly just a bunch of random pattern generators modulated by more random pattern generators 🤖💃🏻
One of my favorite things about teaching Max/MSP is getting to see my student’s minds blown by new but seemingly trivial concepts. Reliving the experience of discovering this program for the first time through the eyes of my students is an unexpected perk of being an educator.
This week’s creative level up: preset waffles can save the state of your patch 🤯😅
Made this generative melody maker in Max today, and then accidentally made a really convincing string patch in Phaseplant to accompany it.

My introduction to Buddhism was through reading Thich Nhat Hanh’s “Being Peace” as a teenager. This opened my eyes to a way of being in the world rooted in unconditional, universal compassion and kindness for all beings, and set me on the Dharma path I’ve followed for most of my life. For this I am forever grateful . Rest easy, and thank you Thich Nhat Hanh.
Virtue in simplicity.
Everything here sequenced by the Five12 Vector sequencer (including the Hydrasynth)
SAVE THE DATE! The Phoenix Synthesizer Festival is coming your way February 11th and 12th. Another stellar lineup this year, with a mix of hybrid and in-person performances and workshops. LINK IN BIO
