We are thrilled to introduce our newest team member, Elmirah Marcus-Garcia! Elmirah is a dedicated youth leader from Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo with a powerful passion for advocating for equal opportunities for young families.

Elmirah's journey into advocacy began at 18, inspired by her own experiences as a young mother and the challenges she faced growing up with a single mother navigating an underserved healthcare system. At just 19, she co-led Participatory Action Research with a young parent collaborative, representing diverse demographics across the nation. This incredible team, known as the Young Parent Advisory Council (YPAC), partnered with the Justice and Joy National Collaborative to produce the groundbreaking report, “Young Parents Speak Out: Barriers, Bias, and Broken System.” Through this work, Elmirah highlighted the critical issues affecting young families at the federal level, gaining the attention of multiple non-profits with her expertise in writing, co-leading, and program development.

Elmirah's impressive background includes her work with two non-profits, one based in the Española Valley and the other a national organization. She currently serves as a Young Parent Advocate with Breath of My Heart Birthplace, where she helps identify the needs and barriers young parents face within the Valley.

Additionally, she actively participates in I Am Why, contributing to the Motherhood Support Group, Reproductive Justice initiatives, and co-leading the Speak On Us Pod and Embracing Creative Freedom Pod.

Despite the challenges, Elmirah pursued her education with determination, re-enrolling in college during her second pregnancy and earning an Associate of Science in Health Administration Services from Colorado Technical University in February 2022.

As a mother of two, Elmirah is committed to creating meaningful change for future generations. Her dedication, experience, and passion are invaluable assets to our team. We are excited to see the incredible impact she will make in our community!

Please join us in giving Elmirah a warm welcome!

Title: STEMarts Youth Bootcamp
'CREATE IN 3D SPACE'
Learn from Scientists. Create with Artists
Ages: 13-20
Date: July 6, 2024
Time: 9am-5pm

The workshop will include coffee and croissants in the morning and lunch.

About the Workshop
We kick off the morning with an exploration of the upcoming STEMarts projects, events and opportunities. Chavez introduces "SPACE MESSENGERS [AR]," an interactive Augmented Reality exploration of the universe. Participants delve into the latest technologies including Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. Learn about mixed reality installations and examples of creating art to communicate science. See how to get involved in our STEMarts installation at exciting upcoming festivals such as the Los Alamos ScienceFest and The PASEO Festival.

We then get a virtual visit from Sophia Dagnello, science communication visualizer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. She will show her work creating the space images from the James Webb Telescope (JWT) and teach you how to create your own images from the JWT data.

The day progresses with participants enjoying a complimentary lunch, fostering connections and building friendships.

Post-lunch, the focus shifts to art-making inspired by the earlier science discussions. Through a hands-on workshop, guided by STEMarts Ambassadors, UNM alumni/artists Ian Harrisson, and Julia Bock, participants will learn to create generative coded art using P5.js. Then STEMarts Apprentices will lead a Tiltbrush VR workshop. Participants will learn to paint in 3D space with Oculus headsets using an app called Tiltbrush to create space-themed digital content for the AR experience in the upcoming installations.
