Lady Lucia is a song about Lucia Joyce, daughter of Irish writer James Joyce. Lucia was born in Zurich in 1907, where her parents lived in self-imposed exile from Ireland. They moved on to Paris in 1920 and Lucia trained as a dancer. She performed with a troupe called ‘Les Six de rythme et couleur’ and was a finalist at the first international festival of dance held at the Bal Bullier in 1929.

At the young age of 22 however she gave up dancing and began to suffer bouts of mental illness. James Joyce always maintained that she shared his gift, and father and daughter had a secret language in which they communicated. She was treated by psychoananalyst Carl Jung, who observed to her father, in reference to his literary experiments, “You are both submerged in the same water, but while you are swimming, she is drowning”. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia and eventually committed, spending the rest of her life in institutions. She died in Northampton in 1982, aged 75.

In the song, we are the audience at an art deco theatre as Lucia takes the stage to perform a modernist dance. The dance becomes a frenzy as she channels maligned women from history and myth. She struggles against her demons and the theatre shakes and crumbles around her. Finally she finds peace within and transcends, rising up above the wreckage.

This months Way Way Out Show sees a bit of a genre-hopping with the deep digging of tunes tonight starting with some post punk, checking out some library funk and soundtrack niceness, and ending with some more laid back jazz and folk sounds. Vinyl discoveries from the 60's to the present with some new music courtesy of Wax Machine, Greg Foat, and having a look at the music of Maurice Lecoeur.

Brighton, UK based psychedelic rock/folk duo Rokurokubi (Rose and Edmund Io) offer up their second studio album, 'Iris, Flower Of Violence', the result of three years working with producer Wyndham Earl. The album is a collection of siren-sung fairy tales, told over a musical landscape of deep acid-folk and psychedelic rock. Gathering comparisons to Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Curved Air or a gnarlier version of early Kate Bush, Rokurokubi's originality and imagination have gained them a loyal cult following, embedding themselves in the UK psych scene with a unique stamp. The album's eponymous track 'Iris, Flower Of Violence' is a twisting 3-part psychedelic folk ballad with a garage rock intro, played on a bouzouki!
