“Tribute to Hip -Hop”
April 25, 2023
Greetings, class of 2023 !!!!
First of all, thank you Lord for allowing us to witness this day! They didn’t believe in us but ...God Did! (Shout out Dj Khaled). Big ups and shout outs to everyone for making it this far. We did it. !!! This accomplishment is to be by no means taken lightly.
I want to give a special shout out to all my fellow classmates who love hip hop. Today, we have the pleasure and honor to be graduating the same year that Hip-Hop celebrates its 50th anniversary. I tell you this journey for me has felt like it took half a century too. :)(SMILE) No, but seriously, it’s been 50 years since Kool Herc threw that legendary party in the Bronx, starting a whole new genre of music and way of life that would change the entire world, till this very day! I want us to take a moment and reflect on how hip hop has influenced us to achieve greatness.
Did you know the true meaning of hip hop is to act on knowledge? So, for example, they used to say ….first you get “hip” or get knowledge and then you “hop” or move out on what you know. Hip hop taught us to be bold and fearless in our pursuit of happiness. It demanded us in the lyrics, energy and fashion to” keep going” forward despite where we come from or what obstacles we might face. Just like hip hop we took some L’s getting here. Many of us worked full-time,raised children, we were teachers , and community activists, all while pursuing our degrees. We lost hours of self care, family time, sleep, etc. But, like Tupac said in Me Against the World,” No matter how hard it gets, stick your chest out, keep your head up, and handle it!” There were days and nights we really lived those words, and today we witness the results of that perseverance.
Hip hop has been a powerful voice in the reminder that injustices still exist in our society. It has called attention to the systemic issues of superiority /inferiority complex , poverty, and inequality . For instance, the iconic songs “ Self Destruction” by various artists and “Fight the Power” by Public Enemy brought awareness and collaboration around issues challenging our communities . Many of our CU projects also seek to address problems where the issues of racism , poverty and inequality are the underlying causes. As we move forward with those projects, let us remember that hip hop has always been a platform for speaking truth to power, and it is up to us to carry that torch. As we get to the bag, we must remember to carry that light of resilience in our fashion ( RIP Virgil Abloh), art, music(RIP MF DOOM, DMX), and activism. Like that song by Yasin Bey suggests ” My Ummi said shine your light on the world.” I'm telling you like a loving mother would have told you “Shine your light on the world and do not let anyone diminish it! Guard it and then ignite someone else’s light and continue until the darkness of ignorance does not exist.”
As we celebrate our graduation and Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary let us remember to use the lessons we learned from hip hop to inspire us to move forward into the next chapter of our lives. Let’s use our CU projects as our voice to speak out against injustice. Let us collaborate for a more equitable society, to create a better future for ourselves and generations to come. So, to all my hip hop fans, keep moving, keep going, keep hustlin’, and keep getting to the bag! But, remember “WU Tang is for the children! “ ( Shout out ODB)
"We just landed…. and ain't no stoppin us!!!!”
Congratulations Class of 2023 !!!! Peace
