Michael McNichols
Thoughts and reflections about the process of writing. This is the official author's page for Michael McNichols.
You'll find excerpts and links to his books and short stories, and also be able to tune in on conversations about the art of writing.
I'll be here today, signing books and doing a reading. Should be fun!
If anyone gets a text from me that looks like this, it's a scam. Don't open it.
I'm a native-born southern Californian. So, when I write my stories, I tend to set them in places familiar to me (places I revise and reconstruct in my imagination). For example:
Harbor Beach Vampire Trilogy: Seal Beach.
The Haunts of Violence: Huntington Beach and Mammoth Lakes.
Ill Repute: Upland (my home town).
Out of the Circle of Being: Fullerton and a distant unreachable planet.
Time Whispers: Fullerton
An Exile in Time: Newport Beach
A Bird in Time: Mammoth Lakes
I'm working on one now that is set in 2075 and starts in north Orange County and moves south to San Diego.
You write what you know, I guess
A recent article in a literary journal claims that the novella (short novel, usually between 15,000 and 50,000 words) is making a comeback. Here's one of mine.

A Bird in Time just went live on Amazon!
A Bird in Time A Bird in Time
My newest novel, A Bird in Time, will be released and available on Amazon in the next few days. Here's the back cover info:
Kelli Chavignol was grieving and she was angry. She was not only grieving the loss of the last vestiges of the crumbling old village of Pamahas in the eastern Sierras of California; she was also directing her anger at the architect who had designed the new development that would replace these remnants of cherished history. Her academic training in archeology and anthropology did not insulate her from the emotion she felt as the backhoe tore down the final structure, an undertaker’s shop that hadn’t serviced the dead for decades.
But when the dead and their century-old settlement reappeared, Kelli’s grief and rage took unexpected journeys into wonder, joy, and terror.
Why are people intrigued by time travel? I think it might be that time is something that is completely outside of our control. To travel in time, especially to the past, would allow the erasing of desperate events, regretful actions, and the reclaiming of lost opportunities. Of course, that would also change the future so that never are The Beatles or boutique beer or streaming service. Pick your poison.
