Pole dancing challenges the perfectionism that is often embedded into other dance styles and activities.

Perfectionism can lead to low self esteem, depression, and anxiety. It stops us from trying or sticking to new things. Unfortunately, many activities emphasize right and wrong, or ranking people from best to worst, which teaches teens that they need to meet a certain standard in order to be valuable- a standard that may not work for them or their body.

Pole has many styles and adaptations, all of which are equally correct and valued in our classes! So many of our students, teens and adults alike, tell us that they wish they had found pole earlier because it encourages self expression and creativity and values diversity, rather than reinforcing perfectionism.

Know a teen who could benefit from some of that? They can sign up for a trial class at our website!

Pole class takes the focus off of what your body looks like and onto what it is capable of. Over and over again, we've seen how this improves teen's body image as they see every class how a little bit of work and dedication helps their bodies learn to do tricks that once seemed impossible!

We place a strong emphasis on providing variations and modifications for different bodies so that classes cater to all sizes, fitness levels, etc.!

Pole dancing is the antidote to insecurity, isolation, and negative body image. But don't take it from us- here's what one teen student has to say:

“Before I started pole, I was struggling with a lot of body issues and I was always beat down because of it. Hanging out in this judge-free space every week for the last 6-ish months and seeing all different body types succeed in this environment really empowered and encouraged me to not give up and feel less negatively about myself.”

A lot of teens have sorted themselves into artists vs athletes. Once they start thinking of themself as "not an artist" or "not an athlete" they're much less likely to explore those areas, even into adulthood. But we all know that moving our bodies and exercising creativity are so important for everyone!

Pole is great because it is both artistic and athletic. It gives artistic students an opportunity to feel stronger in their bodies in new ways, while allowing athletic students to explore their creative side.

Pole draws all types of people, but with one thing in common: a desire to support one another and build strong community. The type of vulnerability required for the sport just lends itself to community building.

When we started the pole fitness for teens program in 2018, we had no way of knowing if this would translate from the adult classes to the teen classes, and we were delighted to find that it absolutely did! We got artsy kids, athletic kids, neurodivergent kinds, LGBTQ+ kids, and nerdy kids all dancing together and cheering each other on.

These friendships went beyond the studio too! Groups of Positive Spin teens hang out after class, on the weekends, and have even gone to prom together!

We love providing a space for teens to break out of their usual crowds and connect with new friends.

Have you ever been, or known, a girl or gender non-conforming person in PE class? It's rough out there! So rough, in fact, that many leave feeling *less* confident and capable in their bodies, which we think is truly tragic.

And have you compared the spectator attendance of girls vs. boys sports? It's astounding that there's still a huge discrepancy in 2024!

All of this sends the message that only men's bodies are strong, capable, and worth investing in.

Here's an anecdote from our program founder, :
"I registered for weightlifting as my PE elective in high school, genuinely hoping to learn techniques and get stronger. Girls were given the option to stand on the side and watch, and I was the only one who opted to actually participate.

It became a daily game for all the boys, and sometimes the teacher to laugh about how much less weight I could lift than the boys, which was very discouraging and caused me to adopt an identity as being weak. Without hope of getting stronger, I stopped applying myself.

In my 20s, I found pole, which celebrated every person, regardless of gender, for every attempt they made rather than shaming some for what they couldn't do. Now in my 30s, I pole at a professional level and have more body confidence than I ever imagined was possible! I can only imagine how empowering it would have been to be introduced to this sport in my teens."
