Mayor Dean Trantalis
Upgrading our infrastructure. Cleaning our waterways. Improving our quality of life. #WeAreFTL
As we approach the peak of hurricane season, staying prepared is crucial. This is a reminder that Florida's final Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday for 2024 starts tomorrow, August 24, and will continue through Friday, September 6.
This is an excellent opportunity to stock up on essential items for your emergency supply kits without paying sales tax. From pet supplies and batteries to smoke detectors, tarps, and portable generators, a wide range of necessary products will be tax-free during this period.
I encourage each of you to take advantage of this tax holiday to prepare yourselves and your families for any emergencies that may arise. For a complete list of tax-free items, please visit www.floridarevenue.com/DisasterPrep.
Last week, I had the privilege of attending the Florida League of Cities Annual Conference in Hollywood. This gathering was an incredible opportunity to connect with fellow mayors and municipal leaders from across our state. We shared insights, discussed innovative strategies for Florida's future, and explored the latest products and services designed to enhance municipal governance. It was also a pleasure to catch up with State Representative Christine Hunschofsky.
The conference provided valuable leadership development and a chance to deepen our commitment to serving our cities effectively.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue is nearing completion of a major upgrade, having built or replaced 11 stations, with just one remaining. The completion of Emergency Medical Substation 88 and other key facilities by 2025 will significantly enhance our response capabilities, thanks in part to the addition of 26 new personnel positions that we funded in last year’s budget.
Yesterday, I met with local business executives who serve on the state's Florida Council of 100 to discuss ways to recruit more business to our community and create additional job opportunities for residents. South Florida is increasingly noticed as a great place to do business by companies both nationally and around the world. I'm working hard to promote that message and ensure we have a strong, diversified economy.
Our city pulses as residents, commuters, and visitors navigate our streets daily. To improve mobility and reduce congestion, we continue to embrace micro-mobility solutions and enhance connections with major transport hubs like Tri-Rail and Brightline. Initiatives like the LauderGO! Micro Mover are making our city more accessible, ensuring that cars are not the sole transportation option. The LauderTrail pedestrian network is in the planning stages, and our comprehensive Sidewalk Master Plan and improvements along Las Olas Boulevard are further steps to ensure every journey in Fort Lauderdale is safe and enjoyable for all. Today, I had the distinct pleasure of joining the Association of Indians in America - South Florida Chapter's 40th annual celebration of India's Independence Day at the Broward Center. Alongside distinguished guests like Consul General of India, Shri Ramesh Babu Lakshmanan, Broward Center CEO Ty Sutton, State Rep. Robin Bartleman, and Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan, we commemorated this special day with our community.
It's an honor to witness and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and contributions of the Indian community in Fort Lauderdale. This event not only underscores the diversity and unity of our city but also strengthens the bonds between our communities.
Fort Lauderdale is ahead of the curve against sea level rise with significant updates to our city-owned seawalls. We’ve undertaken major projects on Hendricks Isle, Cordova Road, Merle Fogg Park, Southeast 10th Street, and along East Las Olas Boulevard, replacing older barriers with higher and stronger seawalls to mitigate flooding risks.
Following last year’s revisions to the City's tidal barrier ordinance, it’s vital that our community understands its role in these efforts. The ordinance now requires that seawalls and tidal barriers meet a minimum height of 5 feet NAVD, an increase from the previous 3.9 feet NAVD. This applies when building new seawalls, repairing existing ones where damage exceeds 50% of the structure, or if tidal flow breaching impacts neighboring properties or public rights of way.
The city has reached out extensively to educate and involve our residents in this initiative, including hosting a virtual town hall and distributing over 8,000 informational postcards to waterfront property owners. We're fortifying Fort Lauderdale’s resilience to protect our community today and for future generations.

In my latest newsletter, I provide a detailed look at our city's renewed efforts to address the challenges of homelessness. The City of Fort Lauderdale is stepping up with enhanced measures, including:
Innovative housing initiatives that do more than offer shelter but strive for long-term solutions to homelessness.
Expanded police patrols in key areas of our city to prevent disruption and ensure public safety.

I was thrilled to join Broward County last week in unveiling the new Supervisor of Elections Office at 4650 NW 21st Ave in the City of Fort Lauderdale. This state-of-the-art facility enhances our electoral process with modern technology, increased accessibility, and advanced security measures. Now open for early voting and Vote-By-Mail ballot drop-offs, it stands as a testament to our commitment to transparency within our democratic process.
Tomorrow marks the for Broward County Public School students. Join me in wishing all our students, teachers, and staff a fantastic start to the year!
This year, we’re enhancing student safety by initiating a pilot program for speed cameras in select school zones. These cameras will operate 30 minutes before and after school, aiding in traffic monitoring and supporting our law enforcement resources.
To all our drivers: please adhere to school zone speed limits and stay vigilant. Your careful driving helps keep our kids safe.
Here’s to a successful and enriching school year for everyone in Fort Lauderdale. Together, ! 📚✏️
Check out the latest from the Miami Herald: "Downtown Fort Lauderdale has added more jobs - and uses a formula you lure workers" https://eedition.miamiherald.com/shortcode/LMCMIA/edition/12bf50ae-5153-639f-2c9b-d155b3370fed?page=3859b777-b033-aa89-f1c6-1baa2621d8d2
As I shared earlier in the week, Downtown Fort Lauderdale has added ~3,200 jobs over the past year, marking a 5% increase since 2023. This growth rate is double that of the countywide average, solidifying our downtown as one of Broward's top economic engines.

I was glad to join the leadership of the InterMiami soccer team yesterday for the announcement that they are receiving a $8 million grant from the state to help with their planned permanent stadium.
Gov. DeSantis made the announcement at the team's current, temporary home of Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The money will go to improve road access to Freedom Park in Miami.
We look forward to continuing to be the home stadium for the team as Freedom Park is constructed. And even once Freedom Park is built, InterMiami will maintain their team headquarters, training facilities and youth program here in our community.
We have had a successful partnership with InterMiami that started with the construction of their facilities here without any investment of public tax dollars. I look forward to maintaining this relationship for years to come.
Last night, I had the chance to connect in the community starting at the Residents for Resilience gathering at Even Keel on Las Olas Blvd. This local group is making waves in advocating for clean drinking water, flood mitigation, coastal resilience, and waterway restoration across the state of Florida. Their commitment to bridging the gap between residents and officials ensures that all voices are heard in shaping a sustainable future for Florida.
The night continued with a celebration of creativity and cinema at the 10th anniversary of the Popcorn Frights Film Festival at Savor Cinema. It was a joy to present a proclamation recognizing a decade of filmmaking and community engagement. Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing these enriching experiences to Fort Lauderdale.
"Probably nowhere else is marina activity and investment as strong as in Fort Lauderdale, which has 165 miles of navigable waterways and bills itself as the 'yachting capital of the world.'
Up the Intracoastal Waterway is the old Las Olas Marina, which is owned by the City of Fort Lauderdale. The city awarded a 50-year contract to Suntex to rebuild and manage the marina, which had devolved into little more than a parking lot, said Mayor Dean Trantalis. The $70 million project includes dredging, relocating a pump station, doubling dockage to 6,000 linear feet, installing slips big enough for superyachts, and building an upscale restaurant and marine-related retail space with amenities for yacht crews. City documents show it is expected to generate $2.3 million a year to the city from the rental income and a percentage of revenues; Suntex will also pay TIITF to lease the state-owned submerged land."

A Tight Ship It’s finding a place to tie up. Slips at marinas are so hard to find that Florida boat and yacht brokers advise clients not to buy a watercraft until they have first found somewhere to store it. “There’s just too many boats and not enough places to park them,” said Nancy Ballard, a longtime ...
Downtown has added approximately 3,200 jobs over the past year, marking a 5% increase since 2023! This growth rate is double that of the countywide average, solidifying our downtown as a pivotal economic engine alongside Port Everglades and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
🏢 With a staggering $35.7 billion annual economic impact, Downtown Fort Lauderdale is a key component to the success of our region. The finance sector, in particular, has seen a remarkable 24% employment increase, led by firms like JP Morgan Private Bank, Synovus Bank, and BHG Financial.
📈 This surge is driven by the demand for high-quality office spaces that offer extensive amenities, attracting more leasing activity than other submarkets. It's a testament to the wealth and skilled talent present in our city, capable of supporting these high-growth industries.
As Florida's population continues to grow, it is crucial that we continue investing in the amenities and transportation infrastructure that connect our communities. With the support of Downtown FTL, we are not only enhancing our economic landscape but also enriching Fort Lauderdale's livability.

Last night at Carter Park was a testament to the strength and spirit of Fort Lauderdale. We came together for , an evening dedicated to fostering community bonds and enhancing public safety. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, and Parks and Recreation for hosting such an engaging event.
From learning valuable safety tips to enjoying the kid's zone with slides and bounce houses, there was something for everyone. The Italian Ice stand, arts and crafts, and the FLPD's Mounted Unit were a hit among our younger residents. These gatherings help us build a safer and more connected community.
As we enter the peak of hurricane season, our commitment to strengthening Fort Lauderdale's resilience has never been stronger. Alongside infrastructure investments generated by the Fortify Lauderdale initiative, here's an update on additional measures we're implementing to safeguard our community against future storms:
• Flash Flood Action Plan: Recognizing the need for a specialized response to intense rainfall, we are crafting a Flash Flood Action Plan. This program will encompass communication protocols, essential contacts, and emergency resources to effectively manage storm impacts.
• Chief Waterway Officer Appointment: To ensure meticulous management of our extensive waterways, we have introduced the position of Chief Waterway Officer (CWO). This role will be pivotal in overseeing our 165 miles of navigable waters, enhancing both policy and operations to maintain the health and safety of our aquatic environments.
• Community Rating System Enhancements: We are actively working with FEMA to improve our standing in the Community Rating System. This effort is crucial for reducing flood insurance premiums for our residents. While national rate adjustments pose challenges, enhancing our rating could provide significant financial relief to our community.
• Road Elevation Strategy: In collaboration with the Urban Land Institute, we are finalizing criteria for road elevations to better protect our city from floodwaters. This thoughtful planning will culminate in a presentation to the City Commission this fall, setting the stage for future infrastructure enhancements.
• Save Our Swale Program: Our ongoing initiative to rehabilitate residential swales is crucial for effective stormwater management. Residents interested in enhancing their property’s drainage can learn more and apply for assistance through our dedicated program.
• Optimizing Surplus Property for Stormwater Management: We are exploring innovative uses for city-owned surplus properties to enhance our stormwater management system. This includes transforming select sites into functional infrastructure like pump stations, which are carefully designed to integrate into and respect the surrounding community.
As Mayor, I am dedicated not only to addressing immediate challenges but also to anticipating future needs to keep our city safe, secure, and thriving. That's why we're investing more in our stormwater infrastructure than ever before.
Attention Fort Lauderdale seniors: Please join us for a FREE Resource Fair on Friday, August 23, 2024. The City of Fort Lauderdale is making preparations for the possibility of heavy rain and strong wind this weekend as a tropical system moves by the region and into the Gulf of Mexico.
Forecasters expect that the main impact of the storm is likely to be on the west coast of the state. However, Fort Lauderdale will see some rainfall and the forecast track could change as the system nears.
As of now, two or more inches of rainfall are predicted over the weekend. The National Weather Service states that there is a 10 percent chance of a higher rainfall of between three and four inches during that time.
Impacts are expected starting Saturday morning. There is a chance of Fort Lauderdale experiencing tropical storm-force winds, with gusts up to 20 or 30 mph.
According to the Public Works Department, the predicted rainfall is well within the capacity of our stormwater system particularly given that the current groundwater level lower than normal.
In preparation for the storm, the city has vacuum trucks, portable pumps, and a tanker truck at the ready. Additional resources from city contractors are on standby in the event they are needed.

This is a good time to remember to be well-prepared for the hurricane season as forecasters expect a very active year. Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
Here are three fundamental actions that should be part of hurricane preparedness.
1. Make a Plan: Develop a comprehensive evacuation strategy outlining what steps to take before, during, and after a hurricane. Share this plan with your family and friends, ensuring everyone knows their roles and responsibilities.
2. Build a Kit: Assemble an emergency kit stocked with essential supplies to sustain you and your family for three to five days. Remember to include ample water, non-perishable food items, batteries, a phone charger, a flashlight, medications, and cash. Preparation is key, and having these supplies readily available can make all the difference in an emergency.
3. Stay Informed: Stay abreast of weather forecasts and alerts, keeping a keen eye on both rain and wind hazards associated with hurricanes. Sign up for emergency alerts from the city of Fort Lauderdale at fortlauderdale.gov/alertftl to receive timely updates and crucial information.
Additionally, to mitigate potential risks, consider fortifying your home with impact-resistant windows and doors, documenting your belongings, and reviewing your insurance coverage.
