Al Pacino and Sidney Lumet during the filming of “Serpico,” released in theaters 50 years ago today.
The fact that the film was ever successfully completed is a bit of a miracle. Production was hampered by a reluctant studio, screenplay challenges, battles between the producer and the initial director that led to the firing of the director and the hiring of Lumet, the use of period costumes and production design, a composer who had just been released from imprisonment, not to mention a challenging subject matter that upset the NYPD. Yet despite it all, “Serpico” has endured as a terrific film featuring a brilliant performance by Pacino, and received Oscar nominations for Pacino’s performance and its adapted screenplay.

Ridley Scott et la dévastation, d’ Alien Covenant à Napoléon From the blog of Alexandre Gilbert at The Times of Israël
Ridley Scott’s Napoleon Is Mediocre Filmmaking in the Service of Centrist Politics Ridley Scott’s Napoleon takes one of the most interesting, complex eras in modern history — the French Revolution and its long aftermath — and delivers a morality tale about the dangers of the mob. Even worse, it’s not even compelling viewing.
