Over the course of our last Fall cohort, we embarked on an intimate project of closely studying and learning from four artists of our own choosing. Without getting too much into the details, let’s just say that I’ve learned so much about painting being a process of embracing opportunities (or accidents and catastrophes) and that being a good imitator isn’t inferior to being a good creator. Either way, I’m just happy to be painting ✌️
In case you missed my IG story, for the month of January I’m freeing up my time to connect and offer support to anyone (from students to fellow artists and anyone really) who feel that they could use an ear or fresh perspective on something. Obviously I’m not a psychiatrist or a professional counselor of any sort, but I’d like to be in your corner if I can be of service in any way. If you have something more specific relating to art that you wanna chat about, I’m all game too.
Use the link in bio to schedule an appt, and you should get a call from me for the date & time of your choosing✌️

Walking into 2024 with big gratitude to everyone who’s loved on me. I am the sum of your care and hospitality on this earth — those who smiled at me on a hard day, welcomed me into their homes as a stranger, imparted words of encouragement when I grieved losses or expressed frustrations, and those who committed to grow with me through the seasons… you helped me stay grounded and kind through the turbulence of life. Thankful that I get to witness and partake in this journey with beautiful people that I love, and love me back❤️
Happy new year 🍾

I love doing projects with students at JPA. This is the very first project we led for Fall Cohort, where we infused personal stories into a long format borrowing visual devices (such as isometric perspectives and diagonal placements) from Japanese scroll paintings.
The philosophy of Ma (間) is evident in their use of negative space, how it constitutes a visual pathway for the eye independent of positive form. It is a sophisticated approach towards figure ground relationship by suggesting that the absence (or proper distance between form) is as significant as the presence of a mark.

Matisse’s paintings struck me once again and showed me a world anew. My aim lately has been to get close to the feelings he had when a brush touches the canvas, and the joy that coursed through his body to witness shapes and colors unfold.
Painting is a testament and prophecy of our human experience. It keeps on giving, sometimes even a few steps ahead. I love painting for what it continues to provide; I’m constantly mystified and in awe of who I am in the process of making, and becoming.

If you missed our summer intensive cohort, do not fret! We’re hosting a three-day intensive drawing marathon from August 11-13, where we will work from a life model everyday and building large scale drawings from observation. Drawing is an integral part of any artistic practice and we’ll be working with you side by side to troubleshoot, explore, and discover ways to construct a dynamic composition. You’ll be working amongst a small group of peers who value rigorous studio practice and are eager to learn and challenge themselves.
Through the process of looking and responding to the environment, you will gain the ability to employ visual metaphors that contain mystery, poetry, and meaning that is unique to your own vision and worldview. Critiques are an integral part of this experience and serve as a catalyst for further investigation. We intend for this experience to live beyond its duration, and it is thoughtfully designed to provide a deeper understanding of image construction and pictorial language.
Deadline to apply: August 4
Fee: $400
*** Current or returning students will receive a 30% discount (spots are limited so please talk to us).

🚨JPA MONTH LONG SUMMER COHORT🚨
Exciting things in store this summer! Jacob and I have worked very hard to make sure we can provide accessible and quality art education to local residents of St. Louis. Regardless of your skill level, age, and/or background, we believe that the first step to creating powerful pictorial image comes from a willingness to take risk and engaging oneself in the act of seeing (sounds simple but it isn’t I promise). For this summer cohort, we want to bring together aspects that are vital to an artist’s growth- including but not limited to: community, accountability, resources, and education. It’s a lot to get into here so DM us to learn more!!
Posted • We have some wonderful things in store at JPA this summer and fall! Our next workshop focuses on goal setting and community building for any early career artists. Please visit our website to learn more or send us a DM if you have any questions.
Thank you to everyone who purchased my 5”x5” works at the “Anonymous Was A Masterpiece” event last night hosted by the New York Studio School ✨✨✨
The NYSS has created a tremendous impact in my life and it continues to enrich my view and experience of art everyday. This event generated funds that would go into scholarship for future students 💕 very thankful that I got to participate.
