Sonbeams - Green Hill Gift Co
At Green Hill Gift Co my aim is to serve you by providing the perfect gift for any occasion, for any person. SonBeams is my online faith journal.
I invite you to explore Christianity along with me. Here we can ponder questions of faith and grow together.
“For more than twenty centuries, Christians have been exhibiting joy. There have been sad, even morose, Christians, to be sure. But the ones who have inspired us have been marked by joy. In fact, when the Roman Catholic Church looked for reasons to canonize a Christian as a “saint,” one of the standard qualifications was the evidence of hilaritas, a Latin word that means “cheerfulness, good humor, joyousness, merriment, hilarity.” In other words, they had to be joyful people, capable of laughing, praising, and celebrating”
This week's blog is a repeat because someone needs to hear it today:

1 Samuel 3: 1-20
This past Sunday’s live Bible reading was the story of Samuel hearing God calling in the middle of the night. He thought it was Eli calling and went to Eli a few times before Eli realized it was God calling Samuel. On the third time, Eli told Samuel go back to bed and when you hear the Lord again, answer Him, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:4-9)
Anytime I hear this story, I can’t help but think of when my daughter was 13 years old, she kept coming to me like Samuel was to Eli. At the time, after a few times she’d come to me, I told her this story & let her know that God still speaks to us. I suggested she, like Samuel, was hearing God’s voice & suggested she listen for the message.
She didn’t hear anything & I thought at the time, How often do we all, like Samuel, mistake our Lord’s voice for someone else’s and, like my daughter, are unable to hear His message?
Do you ever wonder what He’d say if you were in Samuel’s shoes?
And whose voice might we be mistaking for His?
If you’ve ever had a loved one with dementia, then you probably know that their personality can change dramatically. After the reading this week, I was thinking of my initial exposure to this when a loved one said such hurtful things to me that it kept rattling around in my head, despite my book knowledge that it wasn’t real.
Finally, I remembered that there are unseen forces who can place cruel, destructive thoughts in our minds. I realized that those hurtful comments caused me so much pain because they had voiced my own fears. Then evil had used that reflection of my own thoughts against me.
So I had to choose. Whose voice do I choose to cling to? The enemy plants thoughts that tear us down. God’s voice instills strength, love, fortitude, compassion, grace.
I choose God.
𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘪𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭. When weighed against what I do know of God’s being, the enemy’s voice falls short and is revealed.
If today you have thoughts that are disturbing you, I encourage you to cling on to God’s promises. Listen to His voice instead. He is there, speaking love. Always.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
How do I know His voice is there? Because we have been reassured, “He will never leave you nor forsake you.” - Deuteronomy 31:6b
Sometimes the other voices in our head drown Him out but, if you cling to Your faith, if you shut down the other voices one by one, and if you listen intentionally for Him, you will hear the voice of truth, the Lord your God.
May God be with you. And may He roar so loud you can’t help but hear Him.
Love,
Laurie

Hi, friends, I apologize for my recent absence and thank you for your patience with me the past few weeks. We lost my Dad last month. When people check on me or offer me their condolences, I assure them that Dad was ready. I remind them that he’s better off than we are now and I explain that he was so at peace that he imparted that peace to us.
All of that is true and actually there’s even more to it than that because I was so blessed to be able to spend nearly 3 months with him this year, even though I live over 2,000 miles from him. I was able to continue to work remotely that whole time and my daughter was cared for at home by my husband & mother.
Not many employees, parents, or spouses have the flexibility I did during that time but God provided that opportunity to me and it made all the difference in my grief.
Do I still feel grief? Heck yea. This evening I heard a song we sang repeatedly during his last days (“When We All Get To Heaven”) and the waterworks just burst wide open.
But my dad is with our Father & Lord Jesus.
And our Father and sweet Jesus are here with me. They’re clinging me close during this time.
Would I be devastated without the complete assurance of heaven? Absolutely. I don’t know how I would survive. So the promise of our future and Jesus’s sacrifice has a renewed assurance for me.
Friends, the Lord has a plan. He’s working it for good. When He was setting up my situation so that I could spend that time with Dad, I had no idea what was coming. I didn’t know to set that stage. And sometimes it was a little uncomfortable. But knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t change anything.
Friends, remember this: Before you even knew there was a problem, God had already provided the solution.
God is great and He loves us. Trust and exhale.

{Image is the shadow of a man and 2 small children walking away. From the back we see him reaching out to hold the hand of each of the kids, on either side of him.
The verses read “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 and “Yet in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are deserted, inhabited by neither people nor animals, there will be heard once more the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, and the voices of those who bring thank offerings to the house of the Lord, ...For I will restore the fortunes of the land as they were before,’ says the Lord.-Jeremiah 33:10-11}
This week I’ve been noticing how my prayer requests have over time brought insight & gratitude to mind.
𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐝, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐬. — 𝐒𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐊𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐚𝐫𝐝
It’s also been said that prayer may not change our circumstance but it will change our heart.
I pray for the Church every day. Recently, I started praying that we the global Church would be compassionate. That prayer quickly felt stale, too vague. I started praying that compassion would be our reputation. Eventually that prayer started feeling superficial. Although it is important, we are more than our compassion.Through a series of tweaks, I realized the prayer was focusing on us - instead of Jesus. Currently my prayer is that the Church have a reputation for reflecting the compassion of our God.
Another example is that I’ve been praying for our nation. For months, I’ve been praying that we be less polarity divided. The past couple of weeks, something started tickling me. Just this week I realized there’s room for gratitude there. We don’t want a nation of homogenous opinions. There’s no room for growth there. While the polarity is often counter-productive and detrimental to our nation’s health, I’m praying that God use those differences to construct a greater nation to His glory and I’m thanking Him for the passion of so many. May that passion burn the chaff and fuel debates that continually improve the lives of us all.
How has prayer changed you?

{Image is a close-up of my daughter's face while she's snuggling a baby bunny on her shoulder. Her green eyes are looking up to the left. Her hand is holding the bunny, whose eyes are open and whose ears are straight up. A royal blue blanket is in the foreground, a part of her snuggle ensemble.
The scripture is James 5:16b
"𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦."}
I chose this picture because the effect of prayer is similar to the nourishment of a baby - an invisible process that fuels their growth into a more mature, healthy version of themselves.
I want to inspire you to rise above your surroundings. I hope you realize the power of your choices and that you truly can expect more of yourself.
And I realize this is a message that probably is hardest to hear by the ones who need to hear it the most.
Regardless of your beginning, you have more control over your future than you know. Your surroundings are not who you are - but they can mold you & they will if you don’t make a conscious effort to claim a different, higher life for yourself - by defining your values and acting accordingly.
It’s important to note this is not a “should” message. No one is saying you 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 do or be anything.
It’s a matter of choice. Your choice.
What type of environment do you want to live in? What type of world do you want to help create?
It is your choice what your future will be like, and it’s based on today’s choices.
Each and every day is a chance to redirect that future.
But every day you wait to begin constructing it could mean much longer than a single day you’ll have to wait to see that future you desire.
Whether you are a teenager or in your 20’s or 30’s or in your twilight years, this message cana be yours. Anybody who hasn’t realized yet the power within you, consider this: We were created in God’s image. The Creator of the world created us in His own image so that we can be creative, too.
So what will you create?
Every single one of us was created so that we would create good works, with the power to create them.
𝐘𝐨𝐮 were created with that power.
How will you use it?

Take your mustard seed of faith, a deep breath, and one step forward. 👟
Then another. 👟
And another.👟👟👟👟
Because, this I know, if nothing else, God loves you. He loves me and He loves you and there’s nothing we can do to change that. Nothing. 💞
We are never out of his reach so long as there’s still breath in our lungs.
Exhale, trust, and embrace.

{Image is a trail through the woods which appears to be blocked the remains of a dead tree on the right & a fallen tree on the left. The trail is brown dirt. In the foreground the ground is covered by ferns and in the background tall, green trees block the sky. A peak of light gray sky shows in the top right corner.
The scripture is Romans 31:38-39
"𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘯𝘰𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦, 𝘯𝘦𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘴, 𝘯𝘦𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, 𝘯𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘯𝘦𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘩, 𝘯𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘶𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘑𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥."}
Although the perspective in this picture makes it look like the trail is blocked, when I got closer to the tree, I discovered that the trail actually turned to the left just before it.}
This week God has been reminding me that time with Him 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 comes first. Key on the “always” because, as He’s pointed out to me, I have a tendency to let the world distract me. Are any of the following familiar to you? They sure are to me.
- This is super important. I need to get this taken care of first.
- This won’t take very long. Let me just knock it out of the way quickly.
- This is so heavy on my mind that I need to address it first so that I can focus properly.
I could go on and on but I really love the irony of that last one. Don’t you? As if God isn’t enough to refocus me when the siren of the distractions is calling!
I know that my morning prayer time with God makes all the difference in my world - inner & outer - and God has helped me tweak an outline that takes me through gratitude, prayer requests, listening, journaling, & summarizing. The whole process can take less than 20 minutes and still be powerful.
As integral as that time is to the peace & success of the rest of my day, sometimes I find myself “too busy” or “too distracted” to slow down. Laughable but not really.
(Side note to acknowledge that 20 minutes in the morning is not what God asks of us. Constant conversation throughout the day is the goal but that 20 minutes focused time is a different sort of prayer)
I’m so grateful that God desires a relationship with me badly enough to demand my attention to Him! And I know without a doubt that He’s preparing me for times that are too tough for me to handle without God’s strength and comfort.
How blessed are we to have a God who loves us so!

{Image is a view through a car window on a rainy, overcast day. Raindrops are visible on the window. Tree-covered mountains are fuzzy through the fog and a single tall fir tree is blurry in the foreground.
The scripture is Exodus 20:3
"𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘯𝘰 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘨𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘦."}
I chose this picture today because it looks how I feel inside when I start to lose my intimacy with God.

EASTER SUNDAY
"Lily" is the Hebrew word for "Oath of God" and the white lily has become a symbol of purity, rebirth, new beginnings and hope, which is why we associate it with the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Dear Father, I thank You for this opportunity for us to mindfully practice renewed spiritual intimacy with You each year. Although we know we can call on the strength of the Cross anytime, it is precious to have a cycle of rebirth as follow Christ's life on earth from birth at Christmastime to His sacrifice and Resurrection at Easter. We thank You for the blessings You've heaped on us as we seek You. We pray for Your protection as we continue this growth and for Your direction as we reflect Your grace and Your love to everyone we meet. Keep us on the narrow road towards You until we join You in Heaven. Hallelujah! We praise Your name!
Amen.

We are Son-Beams
Earlier this week, I got to see one of my favorite scenic views: sunbeams in a clouded sky. The first time I ever noticed this spectacular sight was in my late teen years on a road trip with my mom. She had taken over the driving duties sometime during the night, while I slept to ready myself for the next shift. I awoke in the early dawn and my eyes lazily focused on the sky, struggling to clear the cobwebs in my head. Instinctively, I looked to the sun to see how high in the sky it had risen.
Moments later, although I had focused on the spot where I knew the sun to be, I realized I couldn’t actually see it because it was hidden by the clouds. My brain had automatically determined its location based on the trajectory of the sunbeams.
That subconscious calculation was beautiful to me. As I marveled at the guiding rays of light, I realized Christians are called to provide the same service in our lives. Doubt or despair may sometimes obstruct the view of Christ for our brothers and sisters, just as clouds may obstruct the sun. But, just as sunrays point back to their origin, we are called to live our lives such that our actions point back to our origin.
Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35 NIV) We are called to be Son-beams.
