Breaking News! ✨ The public engagement process for BC’s Grizzly Bear Stewardship Framework and Commercial Bear Viewing Strategy has been reopened and extended (again!) to October 31st.
Thank you to all those who wrote letters, sent in your feedback, and supported our work. The BC government is listening to our overwhelming concern for the welfare and conservation of the grizzly bear.
This extension will give more time for bear viewing guides, researchers, and Indigenous Guardians who are out in the field the opportunity to finish up their field season and share their knowledge and perspectives for how to best be stewards of this great bear.
If you haven’t taken action yet, please learn how you can add your voice at grizzlybearfoundation.com/stewardship

Today we honour the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation, a momentous occasion to reflect on our shared history and embrace our commitments to reconciliation.
Through , we continue our journey in listening and learning as we amplify Indigenous voices for stewardship, illuminating their stories, culture, and history.
“At the Grizzly Bear Foundation Roundtable, we’re bringing First Nations together, figuring out how we can work together in better protecting and understanding grizzly bears and their relationship with us as people and the areas that we're living in.
Our ancestors had always told us that we learned a lot from the grizzly bears about how to live in our territory when we got here because they were already there and we have a lot of the same needs.
Having these discussions on how best to coexist with bears is huge in understanding our role and how we work together to find ways to coexist.”
Words shared by Jennifer Walkus, Wuikinuxv Nation member and scientist.
We recently launched our campaign hot on the heels of the BC Government’s public engagement process for grizzly bear stewardship.
Together with Commercial Bear Viewing Association of BC guides and operators we are showcasing the role of bear viewing in wildlife conservation and the conservation economy - aptly timed as the BC Government seeks feedback on their first Commercial Bear Viewing Strategy alongside the draft Grizzly Bear Stewardship Framework.
There is one week left to add your voice. Public engagement is open until October 6th at 4PM PT.

“Grizzlies are amazing animals - it’s a privilege to be working out in the traditional territory, showing guests wildlife and sharing traditional culture, knowledge and history with them.
I pray that the grizzly bears on this coast will be able to thrive for centuries to come.”

I think there's a need to start to establish stewardship and the rights of our people, First Nations, Indigenous people, and look at how to start to implement and put action to address the Declaration of Rights of Indigenous people (UNDRIP).”

We are keeping up the pressure on the BC Government this week urging them to extend the public engagement period for the Grizzly Bear Stewardship Framework to at least the end of 2023.

“Nicholas Scapillati, executive director of the Grizzly Bear Foundation and an opponent of the hunt, says the province hasn’t allotted enough time for adequate review. “They released the public engagement process in the middle of the summer and gave five weeks for people to engage. And that's just ridiculous and a missed opportunity.’”
We need more time to ensure this process will sufficiently capture the values and concerns that BC Residents and First Nations have for grizzly bear stewardship.
