Should parts of the Titanic wreck be raised?

1. It's a gravesite.

While this is undisputed, many descendants call for significant parts of the wreck to be saved to tell the world their story in a way that otherwise would be lost or forgotten, a land-based shrine that will endure as a legacy to their forebears. (The 9/11 Memorial Museum as example).

2. What if we do nothing?

Left untouched nature will in time dissolve much of the wreck in the ocean elements. Titanic's propellers cast in manganese bronze will remain intact for centuries to come. Would Titanic's memory be best served by raising parts of her to tell the story. Will future generations ask why she was allowed to disintegrate? What do we owe them?

3. What do we raise?

a) The forward part of the bow. b) The port/starboard anchors. c) The port/starboard propellers.

The new 3D scans show clearly a defined break in the bow section from the main hull. The bow, a structurally strong area of the ship, is buried 60 feet in sedimentary mud; the forward keel section is likely well preserved. The upper hull shows the black paint peeling away revealing the intact steel hull.

In 2012 co-discoverer Dr. Robert Ballard noted that conditions on the ocean floor—"cold, dark, perfect for preservation"—suggest that the wreck will last a long time, if left alone, especially sections of the bow sealed in 60 feet of mud. "When I went down to the Titanic, I saw the anti-fouling paint on the bottom of the ship is intact, still protecting the hull." As the 'Big Piece' demonstrates, raised intact and preserved, Titanic's high-quality steel remains strong.

Titanic's center propeller was cast in one piece, whereas the two outer propellers were cast in sections. The weight of the outer propellers was about 38 tons each (the smaller center prop weighed in at 22 tons).

The port and starboard anchors weighed 8.84 US tons each and would be the first pieces raised to test the lifting process.

Raise the bow to save the bow. The stern remains on the sea floor, the true memorial piece, the location where everyone gathered at the last.

4. Can she technically be raised?

While Titanic is at great depth and rests in pitch darkness, other vessels have been successfully raised: Project Azorian, 2,000 tons, from more than 16,000 feet. The Kursk salvage. The bow had ploughed about 22 m (72 ft) deep into the clay seabed, at a depth of 108 m (354 ft).

Recovery technology has far advanced since then and deep-ocean recovery companies would submit plans for a lifting cradle to protect the hull's integrity. As for brittle steel, her sister ship Olympic crossed the Atlantic 500 times in all weather. The White Star Line built ships to last.

5. Who pays?

Titanic will likely become the world's most popular tourist attraction. Investors, crowdfunding and state loans would fund the "Titanic Bow" project. The cost? Several hundred million dollars. (The Kursk 15-hour operation cost £44 million/$54M in 2000). Additional would be the museum to house it, and every individual beam and plate treated to stop the corrosive process.

6. Who "owns" the wreck?

An agreement between the US and UK Government prohibits unauthorized salvage, however U.S. District Court Judges have permitted recovery from the debris field. Exactly who should be the curator of this new museum and whatever other artifacts are discovered? Morally, the descendants of those who perished. It's their family and they should partly be beneficiaries. Legally, the insurers Lloyd's of London own the wreck.

7. Where should the recovered parts reside?

New York City, Titanic's intended destination, for the bow, an anchor and propeller. One anchor and a propeller repatriated to Belfast, which already has a Titanic Museum (as do Liverpool and Southampton). As close to White Star Line Pier 54 as possible, notwithstanding Little Island constructed without regard over this important historical location.

That New York has no Titanic Museum is a curious oversight, and an opportunity to tell the story of her passengers from 28 nations travelling to the gateway of the New World.

8. What's the precedent?

Many pieces of Titanic have already been brought up; the philosophical argument decided. Many other historical vessels have been excavated or raised, their legacy preserved: Mary Rose, Vasa. The distance of history allows us and archeologists to recover this otherwise lost past. After 111 years is Titanic historically far enough removed? Tutankhamun's burial chamber was a sacred site; does it have more educational value when shared with the world?

9. What if we find human remains?

After 100 years at such great ocean depth physical remains disintegrate, the bones dissolving because of seawater’s chemistry. Within the confines of the wreck, in areas lacking oxygen, any remains recovered would be DNA tested and returned to descendants to be honored with full burial.

Eight sailors’ remains were discovered on the H.L. Hunley, a Confederate submarine that sank in 1864. And human bones were found at a first-century B.C. freighter wreck near the Greek island of Antikythera.

10. Who decides?

The descendants of those who perished. It's their family's grave site. Conversations will be opened with NOAA, the International Maritime Organization and all relevant stakeholders.

11. Why now?

There is worldwide interest in the latest 3D scans that have revealed much, with more scientific discoveries will come. Calls for recovery of some parts will only grow as she further disintegrates. The stern will eventually collapse over the propellers making them unrecoverable for decades to come.

Today, the wreck is a tourist site where only wealthy visitors are able to view the wreckage from inside small submersibles. Should Titanic be shared with a wider audience, scholars, educators as part of STEM programs here on dry land?

On the 100th anniversary of the sinking Dr. Robert Ballard stated "You can't raise the Titanic." No, but you can raise a part of it. Do nothing, and she will end her days a pile of rust on the bottom of the Atlantic ocean.

Titanic is the most famous ship in history. When she is gone, will she be forgotten?

We welcome your comments.
