Today also marks the birthday of director Dina Burlis - Happy Birthday Dina!!! 🎂💫 ✨

Director’s Notes:
It was an absolute delight collaborating with Chris on the soundtrack for JOY WOMACK: THE WHITE SWAN. Chris's approach to crafting music is nothing short of profound; he immerses himself in the essence of the characters. He delved into Joy's world, gaining a deep understanding of her perspectives, life journey, and the pivotal moments within the film. Consequently, when it came time to compose the music, he possessed an innate grasp of Joy's emotions in each scene, allowing the music to beautifully enhance the mood. At times, his musical selections surprised me, yet in the end, they proved to be impeccable choices, seamlessly melding with the narrative and evoking the perfect emotional resonance.
Dina Burlis

Composer’s Notes:
Unusually, circumstances meant that Dina and I communicated indirectly during the scoring process for JOY WOMACK: THE WHITE SWAN. Despite this, it was evident to me that she possesses a distinct artistic vision and bold filmmaking style, her intuitive feedback being something I appreciate. Equally, Joy Womack, a formidable woman and artist, displays remarkable willingness in the documentary to expose her vulnerability and the challenges she confronted as an American prima-ballerina studying and dancing with the Bolshoi in Russia. Both Dina and I aimed to craft a score that would encapsulate these facets of her character and journey, effectively conveying her motivational, inspirational story. I'm deeply appreciative of Dina for placing her trust in me as her first collaborator in the realm of composition.

The documentary chronicles Joy Womack's journey and challenges in becoming the first American to graduate from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. You can watch the film on Amazon (https://lnkd.in/e54BjmTr).

Thursday tease of isolated strings from my forthcoming contemporary music EP - these from the incomparable Joni Fuller whom I've been working with for several years now. She also added strings to Joy Womack: The White Swan Documentary which, incidently, will get its own EP soundtrack release on 8th December .... but I digress.

Meet Joni, a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and sound designer based in the United Kingdom. She is also the founder of Your Strings Attached, a remote music service specializing in providing high-quality, authentic string sections.

Joni's music has been featured on HBO, BBC, Netflix, PBS, Showtime, USA Network, and CNN. Additionally, her compositions have been used in advertising campaigns for companies such as LinkedIn, Nike, Etsy, and Taco Bell. She has also composed trailer music for various TV and film campaigns, including Death on the Nile, Capone, Birdbox, Blow The Man Down, and Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story.

In the field of sound design, she has contributed unique sounds to Arcade by Output and has been involved in sample development for various Output products, including Substance, Analog Strings, and Analog Brass and Winds.

11 years ago I was sat in the dub mix with director, Jules & producer, Olivier at Technicolor for the comedy-feature, Borrowed Time, starring Phil Davis, Theo Barklem-Biggs, Warren Brown and Juliet Oldfield. It was the end of a hectic but very rewarding experience. The film was chosen by the audience as ‘Best of the Fest’ at the sadly departed Edinburgh Film Festival (where actors & crew (myself included) let our hair down (not mine- it fell out largely due to the all-nighters I pulled scoring it I’m sure 😂)

Some good friendships came out of this film, notably Cris obliquely and I still owe the lovely Sophie a drink for bringing the project to me ❤️

An amazing woman/artist with an amazing inspirational life. About 25 years ago I was rehearsing with a band at a rehearsal studio (somewhere in Wembley I think) and in the studio next door was none other than Tina Turner. She was trying out keyboardists for her London concert. We were warned not to approach her but I’m sorry I didn’t at least have an opportunity to ‘bump into her’ on my way to the toilet that day. She could sing anything - even jazz with 🌹❤️

‘In May 2020, Air-Edel Records released a duo of compilation albums entitled 'Fresh Air… Breathe In' and 'Fresh Air… Breathe Out' through their label Besant Hall Records.

The albums are available across all digital platforms, with proceeds from the album sales, downloads and streams benefiting the arts and health not-for-profit organisation Breathe Arts Health Research.

Featuring music from Air-Edel’s esteemed, worldwide roster of composers and artists, the albums were created in response to the … COVID-19 pandemic as a way for the Air-Edel team and their roster to collaborate on a creative outlet, with an outcome that could benefit a musical charity. The twenty five tracks range in style and instrumentation and consist of both pre-existing, unreleased tracks and new works composed specifically for the albums, but each carry a message of hope, love and optimism.’

Well he can’t remember where he put his glasses half the time, (much like myself), but he can remember the most intricate of details from decades ago.

Celebrating Grandad’s birthday today with my sister. ONE HUNDRED!!! (Whattt??) Yep… 100 years old. He has his card from Charles and Camilla to prove it.

The change in the world that he’s witnessed during his life is astounding and we have deep debates about these every week.

"Back in 1958, Mr. Belafonte, who was the first recording artist to sell more than a million LPs, was turned away from one Manhattan apartment after another. And he was furious. So he sent his publicist, who was white, to rent a four-bedroom apartment in the building at 300 West End Avenue.
His publicist passed on the paperwork, and Mr. Belafonte signed the one-year lease in his own name.
Within hours of moving in, Mr. Belafonte said, the building’s manager “became aware that he had a Negro as a tenant.” The building’s owner asked him to leave. Mr. Belafonte refused.
Instead, he bought the building, using dummy real estate companies to cloak his identity. Some tenants who had been renting there bought their apartments and some of Mr. Belafonte’s friends moved in, too. “Lena Horne got the penthouse,” said Mr. Belafonte, who described the real estate deal in his memoir, “My Song: A Memoir of Art, Race and Defiance.” 🌹From the NYTimes

Some snaps from a screening I attended last month, for director Elsie Nemlin’s TV pilot, Odile. Odile tells the story of a French woman, recently immigrated to London from France. Amongst her many challenges, her teenage son is a victim of knife crime. Hopefully her tv series will find an outlet soon. mayfilmworks.com/Odile

So nice to see many music friends at & such a pleasure to be on the jury again this year. Highlights of the evening were speeches by Peter Gabriel, Peter Kay (who introduced him), Paul Heaton and The Ivors Academy Chair Tom Gray.

It's always surprises to witness the humility and sensitivity shown by the most famous bands (past and present) of the music industry when they are celebrated in the intimate setting of the Ivor Awards.

Congrats to the honourees and to all those behind the scenes who put it all together.
