Culture me up, Sunday. Did you know that the house that serves our museum is the village’s oldest documented stone house? 🧐
Also known as the Winters-Wimberley House provided a home for both Winters and future millers. Descendants of Pleasant Wimberley lived here until 1997 when the stone house, its later additions, and surrounding five acres were purchased for community use.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and now serves as the Wimberley Valley Museum.
Come visit us and be a part of the history of our town! We are located at 14068 Ranch Road 12!

The magic of the Wimberley Valley goes beyond recorded history. Those of us who live here now, are happy to tell the story of our town -the first written and remembered history of Wimberley dates from the 1800s.
Wimberley started as a trading post settlement near Cypress Creek in 1848, the year Hays County was organized. After William Carvin Winters built a gristmill at the site in 1856, it took on the name “Winters’ Mill”. After Winters’ death in 1864, successive resident millers were his son-in-law, John Cude, and in 1874, Pleasant Wimberley, whose successful management lasted over 20 years.
Come and visit our Wimberley Valley Museum, the story starts here!
We had a very successful walking tour today as part of StoryFest! We had the fortune of guiding 13 folks on the tour, who were all very impressed with the information they received.
We want to recognize our amazing volunteers & docents who made this such a success as well as give a shoutout to Dos Olivos Markets for providing us with a much-needed water rest stop.

[CULTURE ME UP SUNDAY] How did Wimberleyville become Wimberley?🧐
Keep on reading to learn more about how we got to be named WIMBERLEY!
🟠Wimberley started as a trading post settlement near Cypress Creek in 1848, the year Hays County was organized.
🟢After William Carvin Winters built a gristmill at the site in 1856, it took on the name “Winters’ Mill”. When the mill was sold in 1864 to the Cude family, its name was changed to “Cude’s Mill”.
🔵It was sold again in 1874 to Pleasant Wimberley and took on his name. Over the years, the mill was expanded to process lumber, shingles, flour, molasses, and cotton. The mill is gone, but the Winters-Wimberley house survives.
🟣In 1880, Alfred vom Stein, a postmaster from San Marcos, applied to have a post office established in the community, calling it “Wimberleyville”. The application was granted, but the name was shortened to Wimberley.
Want to learn even more? Come visit us at The Wimberley Museum, located right next to the Wimberley Community Center!
