If you’re looking to attract #pollinators to your garden with #shrubs, most flowering shrubs will do the trick. Just like with perennials, look for spikes of flowers (like on Sweetspires or SummerSweets) or bright flowers (like Sunburst Hypericum). Even shrubs with clusters of flowers like the Galaxy Snowberry (an Illinois native) will attract pollinators. For more examples, check out our guide to attracting #Butterflies and #Hummingbirds on our website: https://ow.ly/6bi950Sf1tQ #PollinatorGarden #GardeningTips

If you’re looking to attract pollinators to your garden with Perennials, almost any flowering perennial will do. Look for tall spikes of flowers (like on Butterfly Bushes and Salvia) or scented flowers/plants (like Bee Balm). For even more examples, check out our guide to attracting Butterflies and Hummingbirds on our website: https://platthillnursery.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Butterflies-and-Hummingbirds.pdf

If you’re looking to attract pollinators to your garden with Annuals - look for bright colors and “deep throats” on the flowers. Examples are Lantana, Cuphea, and Petunias. As a kid, I enjoyed playing with snapdragons and making them "talk." Well......confession, I still do. You too?

The amount of damage to plants in our area is anticipated to be very minimal. Catherine Dana, a cicada expert with the Illinois Natural History Survey at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign says that other than the noise, the biggest impacts from cicadas are soil aeration from the insects burrowing out of the ground and some minor damage to plants as they feed. “They have a straw-like proboscis, so all they’re doing is drinking some plant juices. They really don’t do much damage to the plants themselves.” For more information on this year’s cicada emergence and how it might impact us - visit our website at: https://platthillnursery.com/cicadas-in-chicagoland/
