Poznan University of Medical Sciences

We are proud to share that, at the beginning of this year, the construction of the two first modules of the new PUMS Hospital was completed, and this brand-new clinical facility opened its doors to patients. With the official name University Clinical Hospital in Poznan, this new medical center located at 55 Grunwaldzka Street in Poznan, has been integrated with the network of PUMS hospitals.

Within the new premises the University has initiated the operations of an emergency care unit – the fourth one in the city of Poznan – complete with a helicopter landing pad, observation room, intensive care room, operating and consultation rooms. The facilities are also the new home for:

Integrated Operating Theater Unit (15 operating rooms, including two state-of-the-art hybrid ORs equipped with an intraoperative CT scanner with neuronavigation, and a neuropathology microscope for digital assessment of tissues without the necessity to physically extract them),
One-day Surgery Ward with 4 ORs,
Central Diagnostic Laboratory,
Anesthesiology and Pain Therapy Ward,
Endoscopy Laboratory,
Orthopedics Ward,
General Surgery Ward,
Transplantation Surgery Ward,
Endocrinology, and GI Oncology Ward,
Urology Ward.

Additional modules expanding the facility are already in construction (including a Cardiology Ward) with the completion date set for 2026.

We are overjoyed to see this new center come to life and start functioning as part of our city’s healthcare infrastructure. With modern specialized design for medical use, state-of-the-art equipment, qualified personnel, and central location in the Grunwald district where most of PUMS campus buildings are located, the new hospital will contribute to raising the quality of medical care and accessibility of care in Poznan and the Greater Poland region, as well as improving the quality of medical education and workplace environment for our medical staff and students.

The total cost of the first two modules (over 25,000 sq m equal to around 270,000 sq ft) amounted to 411 million PLN, with contributions from:

268 million in government subsidy,
79 million of EU funding,
63 million coming from the University’s own budget.

Transferring knowledge during lectures is not easy, which is why students appreciate those teachers who, through an interesting format, understandable descriptions, and engaging content, encourage them to delve into the subjects and make the lecture hall packed!

Every student at the end of the academic year can nominate a Lecturer of the Year, who, in their opinion, conducts lectures in an exceptional manner.

Amicus Studentium is a plebiscite during which you annually choose the most liked and respected lecturer. As students, what we value the most are: the ability to transfer knowledge, willingness to help, treating students as partners, interestingly conducted classes, and understanding.

Nominations for voting will be collected from June 18 to June 22, 2024. Voting will take place from June 24 to June 27, 2024.

Prizes for the chosen Lecturers will be awarded during the Official Inauguration of the Academic Year!

This week we welcome back in Poznan two of our alumni joining PUMS Faculty as visiting professors for a week of classes.

Dr. Aleksandra Murawska-Baptista and Dr. Abhinav Singla, both currently working in Mayo Clinic network hospitals in the US, will conduct Internal Medicine classes for our medical students in the English-language program, focusing on communication skills. Drawing from their extensive clinical experience in the United States, our guests will talk about doctor-patient communication, elements of differential diagnosis, and about the specifics of in- and outpatient practice. The speakers will be returning to Poznan to teach the course in the future to make it a regular part of our medical curriculum.

We are proud to share the application results of students and graduates in the 2024 US National Matching Program: 100% of our current final year students who applied for medical residency in the USA this year have matched. The overall match rate for our school for this year, including applications of graduates from previous years, is at 83% - significantly above the average result for international medical graduates (IMGs) of 61%.

PUMS doctors matched to residency positions in 19 different US states, with New York (5), Pennsylvania (5), and Florida (3) being the most popular choices. The medical specialties chosen were: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Emrgency Medicine, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry, Radiology, as well as two PGY-2 positions: in Dermatology and Radiation Oncology.

We sincerely congratulate all of the hard-working students and graduates their success, and wish them the best of luck and professional fulfilment in their future careers!
