We partnered with EBRAINS, a pan-European digital infrastructure that facilitates research collaboration across individual researchers, institutions and borders. Inspired by their spirit of openness, we helped launch a decentralized research portal that enables scientists to publish, discover, and collaborate on research that advances brain science. https://hubs.ly/Q01ZYghj0

This year, we were inspired by NYC Pride's 2023 theme, 'Strength in Solidarity,' which spotlights resilience and power in a year where we’ve seen nearly 500 pieces of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation introduced across the United States, just in the last 7 months.

Over the past month, our global teams got together to discuss the importance of allyship in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights - and more broadly in all of our DEI efforts. We also learned more about the history of Pride and where LGBTQ+ rights currently stand across the nations where we have staff or contractors.

In addition to engaging in conversation, we took time to celebrate and share the joy that comes with being in the LGTBQ+ community. 🌈

OpenAI’s recently launched platform provides a digital space for general audiences to learn about machine learning technology.

In the research index, users can discover OpenAI’s work through a refined filtering system, read abstracts on published papers, and download their open-access research. Users can also discover the brand by interacting with OpenAI’s AI-generated models like ChatGPT and DALL-E, which are now embedded throughout the main site.

Last week, the new OpenAI platform received a Webby nomination for best Science Website and Mobile Site. You can vote for our work and read about our partnership in the links below.

Coming out of SXSW we’re left with a sense of excitement and wonder at the way our world is actively shaped by technology, business, and the humans behind and benefitting from it all. Our COO Hannah Kreiswirth was a speaker on the panel "A citizen-centric future city" and spent an invigorating start of the week in Austin learning, connecting, and reflecting on how work and infrastructure can better serve people, today and in the future.

16/03/2023

Since its founding in 2015, OpenAI has advanced research and software development to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits humanity.

Following the launch of its commercial arm and the release of revolutionary AGI-generated models like DALL-E and ChatGPT, AREA 17 worked with OpenAI to deliver a position and platform that captures the energy and mission of the company.

The redesigned platform translates a complicated set of technologies to a range of audiences, in a way that is relevant and engaging. With an elevated visual identity, intuitive (and open access) research index, and a refined mission statement, the new OpenAI platform demystifies a world-transforming technology while demonstrating a commitment to advancing a safe AI future.

SXSW 2023 — AREA 17 13/03/2023

As urban dwellers and connected humans, between the bustle of our day-to-day activities, it's rare that we have the opportunity to pause and reflect on how we envision and actively shape the ideal city of tomorrow. Today at 4 PM CT / 5 PM ET, Hannah Kreiswirth and SXSW co-panelists Mike Radenbaugh, Jason Long and Moderator Catherine Mathys have the opportunity to do just that.

The Citizen-Centric Future City panel questions how the rise of remote work will impact the design, function, and infrastructure of cities, and the role businesses can take in shaping urban environments that promote health, sustainability, and social equity.

Meet and connect with the panelists:

While womxn make up 49% of the global population, in our industry, only 22% of web developers are female.

On this 2023 International Women’s Day, with the theme of ‘DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality’, we wanted to take a moment to recognize our colleagues who are breaking the status quo in a traditionally male-dominated field and solving complex problems for our network of global partners.

Senior Interface Engineer Florrie Sharp, Associate Engineer Pei Barth Wu, Application Engineer Joyce Verheije, and QA Engineer Oleksandra Chuprykova bring their personal creativity, ingenuity, and precision to complex front and back-end solutions. Oleksandra most recently joined and shared with us: "As an engineer, I want to make the world a better place through compassion and kindness. Personally, being an engineer means being creative, adaptive, and open to new ideas."

We’re on a humble, committed, and educational journey ourselves to continue to grow our representation of womxn and other marginalized groups into technology and design, and to shape our organization to represent the world.

In 2003, our late co-founder Arnaud Mercier joined forces with George Eid to create AREA 17. Arnaud brought a passion for graphic design, and George, a love for storytelling shaped by a background in theater and film.

Since then, AREA 17 has pursued its vision for a more open, resilient, and optimistic world through the brands, experiences, and technologies we bring into the world together with our partners. Today, we’re proud to mark our 20th year as AREA 17. What started in a Brooklyn loft and blossomed in a Paris atelier has allowed us to collaborate with fascinating and inspiring people to advance some of the world’s most admirable and influential organizations.

As we enter our third decade—our third act, so to speak—we’re focused on our impact through how we deliver for our partners, how we operate to serve our communities, and how we engage with our industry and the world.

We’re excited about everything ahead and can’t wait to invite you to our new clubhouses in Paris and New York when they open later this year.

Since our founding nearly 20 years ago, AREA 17 has pioneered a new design vernacular, produced seminal works, and built a consulting practice that ensures transformative value creation for our clients.

On March 6, 2023, we turn 20. As we continue our commitment to delivering pioneering and transformative work, we aim to increase our contributions to our industry and society, so we merit our 30-year retrospective.

As we near our third decade, we look forward to a new chapter.

In 2022, we worked to increase learning and teaching throughout our organization.

This past summer, we launched a new program that paired six apprentices with senior mentors across strategy, design, engineering, production, and operations.

And to foster a learning culture beyond our walls, we continued our partnership with Useful School, a pay-what-you-can online design school for people of color.

Work is an integral part of our lives, and because of the pandemic and the rise in remote work, it’s a much more integrated part of our lives. We can no longer pit work and life against one another. To keep our company thriving is to keep our team and our clients thriving. As we look toward the future, our operating model at AREA 17 continues to be propelled by a mandate to serve people.

Post-pandemic, we have the insights, ideas, and momentum calling for a new future for what work means in our lives and businesses. The opportunity to change the future of work starts with an ambition to support people to live their lives wholly and harmoniously.

OXMAN | Communication Arts 06/12/2022

We're proud to share that our collaboration with OXMAN—a hybridized design, technology, and research company started by MIT professor-turned-entrepreneur Neri Oxman, was featured in Communication Arts Webpicks.

Beginning with brand strategy and working hand-in-hand with the OXMAN team, AREA 17 worked to align OXMAN's brand platform and define a new type of industry that galvanizes people around a future-forward sustainable world. With this foundation in place, we meticulously designed an online experience that tells the OXMAN story in a simplified yet evocative way and embodies the brand in every detail.

Learn more about how we approached this challenge, the core design principles that drove the brand expression, and the open-source technology that powers it all:

Earlier this year, Neri Oxman launched OXMAN, a research lab that fuses science, technology, and art to come up with nature-centric design solutions. In our second collaboration with Neri, a multi-faceted visionary-scientist-thinker, our task was to create a brand and website—including strategy, tone of voice, and a visual system—that brings to life this revolutionary approach.

For 50 years, NIKE has testified to the boundless power of sport by making its mark on athletes and communities all over the world. Working in close partnership with NIKE’s communication team, AREA 17 set out to design a holistic corporate website that would capture the scope of the brand’s global impact.

Consolidating NIKE’s previously-siloed corporate sites into a centralized destination, the new NIKE About site is singularly original in both presentation and performance. A far cry from the static corporate website model, the platform embodies NIKE’s impact with a dynamic visual identity, refreshed narrative strategy, and a commitment to human-centered content. Built with Twill, our own open-source CMS toolkit, the platform streamlines the publishing workflow and empowers NIKE’s in-house communications team to help tell an evolving brand story.
