Build your own equipment!
These tools which your students can build will help bring them to the next level. They'll continue to develop skills such as measurement, cutting, welding, grinding, and finishing, and when they are done they will have useful tools to work on their own vehicles. All welds for jack stands and car stands should be inspected thoroughly!
An ice fishing stove will help you stay warm during the cold days of winter. Great project for senior students to develop skills such as measurement, layout, cutting, welding, grinding, fitting, and finishing.

Handy man (or woman!)?
Hand skills are essential. Projects like these teach patience, persistence, attention to detail, as well as fine motor skills, layout using dye, scribing, hack-sawing, filing, and more. These are great for junior level high school classes such as grades 9 or 10, or as time fillers in senior level courses to evaluate proficiency. If you include annealing and heat-treatment, these projects can also include useful edged tools (some supervision required). Learn to Burn!
The love of welding, and the enjoyment of the artistic side of the craft, is one that can be instilled as early as middle-school years with creative projects such as these and a mig welder. Students learn to plan out their project while also being open to change along the process. Basic welding safety can be taught (auto-darkening helmets recommended). In the course of a few short sessions, students can produce something memorable they will cherish for many years to come. Skills include design, welding, drilling (in some cases), safe handling of hot materials, cutting, shaping, bending, and more. The best part is these can be made from scrap that businesses and yards will happily donate to your program!
Timing is everything!
Clocks are a great project for high school students who already have a solid foundation of basic skills and who want to make a project that is both creative and useful. Skills including design, welding, drilling, fitting. Depending on the complexity, this project could be used as a great filler or or add-on for extra credit for those students who finish ahead of others on main projects.
