Jen + Émile’s micro wedding at Scotland Fields was one of those perfect, sunshiney, laid-back events that felt so easy to take part in and document the unfolding. Not to mention, that divine golden hour light!

Such a perfect evening wandering the coastline with Caroline + Daniel. So good to be back in the swing of engagement and wedding season! And so much goodness to come this year. 💫

Rawan + Mike on a gorgeous spring evening in Maine.

This was Rawan’s first trip to our state, so it was extra special to share a coastal gem and show off the landscapes and seascapes that make Maine shine.

See you two in a few short months at the Cliff House!

Did you know? When you move forward with me as your photographer, you will receive a beautiful (if I do say so myself) Wedding Experience Magazine, with nearly 70 pages of engagement + wedding planning content, crafted with love. 💌

Whether your engagement is long or a matter of a few months; whether your wedding experience includes a planner or you’re going it alone; I created this resource to help you feel comfortable and prepared all the way through the “I do’s” (no matter how many items are left on your to-do list). And hopefully to inspire you with tips, thoughts, and swoon-worthy details from other celebrations I’ve photographed.

It’s my intention that you find it helpful and enjoyable to flip through as your event falls into place, piece by piece.

Here are a few sneak peeks into the mag!

Big reception energy and fleeting milliseconds I just adore.

Ariana + Allan on one of those finger numbing, beautiful winter days in Cape Elizabeth.

What was intended to be a snowy, wintry engagement session ended up being more of the stark winter kind – but just look at the golden light, smiling (albeit frozen) subjects, and brilliant Maine landscape.

Can’t wait to return to this stunning private property in autumn to celebrate these two again! Thank you for braving the elements, A + A.

A moment for the beloved fishing shacks on Willard Beach, swept to sea by a winter storm last month.

This session was actually my introduction to Willard, and it instantly felt like a little gem. Word on the street is that the shacks will be rebuilt, as their loss was felt by much of the Maine community.

On another note, I adore these two! To say I am psyched for Lisa + Andrew's wedding at Caswell Farm & Wedding Barn this season would be an understatement.

Let’s talk tides.

As a seacoast wedding photographer, I’m not only thinking of portrait considerations like light quality and availability, park/venue regulations, weather, and stunning scenery. I’m also thinking about ocean tides.

When working through wedding timeline details or scheduling a portrait session with clients, local tidal charts are key to determine the availability of beach and other landscape elements so specific to Maine’s coastline. For spots I find myself photographing at often, I know visually what that landscape is going to look like at each tide, helping me figure out where I can and can’t take couples for various photo compositions.

For Ali and James’s Downeast wedding at the beautiful The Lookout Inn Inc., we knew we had to be strategic when planning their romantic portrait session at the inn’s distinctive “kissing trees” — accessible by sandbar only at low tide. A quick check of the tides and we knew that golden hour wasn’t going to provide that opportunity, but thankfully, the stars (and tides) aligned for us to spend a first look portrait session there. Knowing that, we built in plenty of time pre-ceremony to walk down to the water, across the sandbar, and make our way toward those glorious kissing trees. (I may have almost stranded us out there getting swept up in ‘photo land’, but what’s a little rock hopping to add to the adventure?)

You can see the progression of tide at the Lookout from first look to ceremony and cocktail hour. Just gorgeous!

So if you chose your venue for specific scenery on the coast, here’s your reminder to partner up with a photographer who can work with the elements to get you those portraits of your dreams.

It feels time to reintroduce myself to the new followers here, and share what my energy looks like in these little social squares.

First off, I’m so glad you’re here! I’m Alanna, a storyteller + seacoaster rooted in beautiful midcoast Maine. My love and I relocated here from southern Maine in late 2023, and couldn’t be happier to call this slice of coastline home.

This season will be my 7th year in business photographing weddings. I never went to school for photography — it was a long-standing hobby that turned into a passion project, and then a career that allows me to always be learning + exploring the craft of photographing those gorgeous milliseconds of life.

Some of you might remember an old tidbit I once shared about my administrator position in college for a global organization called The World Needs More Love Letters. A small group of us romantics wrote “love letters” and left them across campus for strangers to find — a nod to the power of words, to lift + empower fellow humans and tell someone out there that they were loved and seen. I still adore that idea.

After I graduated college with a business degree, I worked a few summers as a wedding day coordination assistant (alongside my 9-5 marketing job) for the brilliantly talented Nicole Mower Weddings & Events — my door into the wedding industry and ultimately the start of my photography business. (Side note: if you’re looking for an incredible planner for your event, hire Nicole at once! I respect her work and talents so much.)

As a documentary-driven photographer, I create my best work not when forcing moments or poses, but just being present to capture the spirit of the celebration around me. I feel the most aligned with the kinds of weddings where you can be fully immersed in the moments, rather than every little timeline detail or expectation of what a wedding “should be”.

And lastly: as your wedding photographer, I’m not here to simply take beautiful photographs and send you on your way. I’m here to give you an experience. That’s why I am intentional about the number of celebrations I fill my calendar with, and channel my energy into a thoughtful, personal experience that feels deeply connected with each of my couples.

If that’s your dream wedding experience, I can’t wait to connect with you. And for everyone else following along (and reaching the end of my rambling): I’m just so grateful to have you here.

Emerging from a bit of a posting hiatus to give a moment for these dreamy details ✨

Detail shots aren’t something I highlight often on my feed, but oh, have I photographed some beauties. These are just some of my favorite details over the years.

Tender first looks and disco glam vibes were the theme of Haven + Kyle's chic wedding at Jimmy's Jazz & Blues Club.

This wedding was a whole vibe. Haven is a boss bride, and having seen and executed many weddings as an event manager at the ViewPoint Hotel (York, Maine), she wanted her own to stand out. What she and Kyle landed on was a modern and bold design, with fun elements like rock candy, records, and all the disco balls to play off the jazz club's stylish and masculine aesthetic.

It's always such a compliment to be chosen by a fellow wedding vendor to document the most important event they'll plan. I'm so grateful to Haven and to all the couples who allowed me a peek into their lives this year — to see you, and to capture those magical fleeting moments that make life so beautiful.

Seacoast Wedding 2023 (Fall/Winter) - Photo by Alanna Hogan Photography

Photos from Alanna Hogan Photography's post 27/10/2023

When the forecast predicted yet another rain-soaked Saturday for the wedding of Brittany and Alex, I was initially quite bummed. But even though heavy rain pushed their ceremony indoors and a puddle-ridden tent had guests’ shoes sinking into the earth, somehow the evening ended up all the more cozy — with raindrops pounding on the sailcloth as candlelight and laughter filled the space with love and light.

Loved this stormy, romantic day at The Barn at Flanagan Farm. And by some miracle, we managed a mere five minutes of portrait time with B + A in the orchard with brilliant fall color before the rain forced us indoors. And you know what? Five minutes is sometimes all you need.

Well this was a wonderful surprise.

Finally got my hands on a copy of the winter issue, and so honored to have a photograph of mine on the cover! Featuring the very stylish Piper + Michael (whose affair you can find on my blog!).

Very grateful to have my work recognized in this loved publication, including their “Best of Seacoast Weddings 2023” where you can spot more of my work in print. 💌

Thank you for the honor, ! And thank you to everyone here in my corner for following along and supporting this craft that I love so much.

What started as a dreary Old Port session (with an unexpected rainstorm that had us darting for cover), ended with this killer light at one of my favorite Cape Elizabeth spots. Sometimes holding out and waiting for the storm to pass is worth it and then some ✨

I don't often photograph families during the summer months, as my energy is directed very intentionally toward weddings and love stories. But when a dear friend reaches out looking to capture the current season in her family's lives, you make time for a beautiful lifestyle portrait session on the beach.

Riddy and I met while working together (in a previous life) at a small marketing agency, and we both paved our own paths into the wedding industry at similar times. It's been so sweet to watch her from the sidelines as a mother to two beautiful boys. How special to bottle up these sweet family milliseconds!

Christina + Harris in Camden and Rockport, Maine. Such gorgeous light on a perfect Sunday in October as we hopped around one scenic landscape to the next, proceeded by a sweet little backyard ceremony. Love elopement portrait sessions like these!

And so it begins… our homeownership journey!

Cole and I are over the moon to announce the purchase of our first home in Woolwich, Maine.📍🏡

Anyone in our close circle knows that it has been a long, trying two years house hunting. The low inventory, the disappointing market, the absolute insane bidding wars that truly felt impossible to compete with. There has been so much effort, manifestation, investment of time, and a spectrum of emotion behind the scenes over the past couple of years. What a ride!

And then she found us. 🥹 This beautiful, newly-built dwelling in one of our favorite stretches of the Maine coastline: the midcoast. There was never a question of leaving our idyllic home state, and we have increasingly felt pulled toward this region where charming peninsulas meet the ocean, offering both peaceful solace and adventurous opportunities. We are beyond blessed (and still not quite convinced this is real life!).

Naturally, all of this has happened to coincide with the busiest time of my season, and what a wild month it has been! For my lovely clients: please grant a little extra grace and patience on gallery delivery times, and know that nearly every moment that is not consumed by boxes and a myriad of tasks that come with getting settled into a new home space, is spent carefully crafting your galleries (and continuing to photograph other love stories).

Thank you for sharing in the excitement with us as we transition to our beautiful new home in Woolwich 🤍.

These late summer days have me dreaming of autumn and its lovely palette.

A lot of people mourn the last few weeks of summer and the inevitable arrival of New England’s colder seasons, but this time of year makes me come alive. Maybe it’s the same part of me that loves being nostalgic and finds peace in melancholy music. There’s a magic to this time of year — the subtle shifts in the air and light. The feeling on the breeze. The ever-so-slightly crisper evenings. It’s an impossibly busy season for photographers, but one that I crave each year and try to stay present in.

Here for all the beauty of what’s to come. ✨
