MILLERS ARE BROWN GRAND LEGACY BOARD MEMBERS
On Thursday, September 14, 2023, Marlene and Everett Miller became the first inductees to the Brown Grand Opera House’s new Legacy Board.
Established in 2022, the Brown Grand Board of Directors created a Legacy Board to recognize long-standing Board members for giving of their time, talents, support, and enthusiasm to further the mission of the Brown Grand – to enhance cultural life in North Central Kansas.
The individuals are acknowledged for the incredible impact they have made in our community by serving as a member of the Brown Grand Board of Directors.
Marlene and Everett Miller were the first to recommend that the Brown Grand movie theatre be fully restored to become a live performing art space in the 1970s. Everett said, “When my wife, Marlene, and I attended a movie here I looked around and said to her that this would be a wonderful performance venue.”
He spoke with Judy Doyen and Leon Genette, at the Chamber of Commerce, and with Jack Roney, owner of the Brown Grand movie theatre. After some pieces fell into place – the rest is history.
Everett was also key in adding the Brown Grand Opera House to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 – over 50 years ago. The couple has served on the Brown Grand Board of Directors for years. Everett was one of the first Board members after the Brown Grand became incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit in the 1970s.
Legacy Board members are welcome to attend all regular Brown Grand Board meetings as a non-voting member, and will be listed in event programs and on the Theatre’s website. They also receive free admission to any Brown Grand-sponsored events.
Brown Grand Board Chair, Dr. Monte Wentz says, “We wouldn’t be where we are today without Marlene and Everett’s leadership, dedication, vision, and generosity to the Theatre over the last five decades. We couldn’t think of a better way to recognize this couple than by having them be the first to join our Legacy Board. Their joy, energy, love, and passion for the arts will carry on for years to come at the Brown Grand.”
Donations to celebrate this honor and to help advance their dream for the Brown Grand can be mailed to the Brown Grand, PO Box 347, Concordia, KS 66901.
The Great Society Tribute Concert has been postponed until next May or June.

Good day Great Society members. There have been a couple of changes that I need to inform you of. The first is the change of location. When I initially spoke with the Brown Grand, It had not yet been spoken for. However, when I was ready to actually pull the trigger, a high school reunion class had already reserved the theater for their own use. Therefore, with a lot of help from Brad Bryant and cloud county community college, we are going to have it at the college in the gymnasium. Also the time is changing to 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. as the festivities in downtown Concordia for Fall Fest are to begin at 8:00 pm. This will allow us to maximize our time to honor Everett, and have a group meeting afterwards. Please do not let this deter your coming and honoring Everett. The date still remains the same, however there were some adjustments that had to be made. I apologize, I didn't act quick enough on the Brown Grand. That's on me! There will be communications sent out from the college for you to RSVP. And I will let you know of any thing else that's going on. I will be setting up rehearsal times for different groups during the day. We will have one large group sing-along practice for the opening piece of mighty Mississippi, and the closing of the music will never end. Thanks for understanding, I welcome any feedback!
