'She had passed by the reception desk and was moving into the hallway when she heard a noise behind her. Before she could turn round, a pair of arms had grabbed hold of her, and she found herself thrust against the wall so sharply she hit her head. A second later, a hand was wrapped around her mouth and she felt the sharp edge of a knife at her throat.
Closing her eyes, she tried to thrash out backwards with her arms, but the figure behind pushed against her even harder. She heard ragged breaths in her ear. Opening her mouth, she was about to bite down hard, when she heard a voice.
“Stop struggling, would you?”
Faith went still. The voice was strange. Deeper than she was used to.
Somewhere, she’d read if you relaxed, an attacker would be fooled into thinking you’d given up, so you could surprise them by striking when they weren’t expecting it. She forced her muscles to relax, melting against the body which was pressed against hers. The person was tall, she figured, but not hugely broad.
“Okay.” The hold on her was relaxed slightly. “I’m going to let you turn around. Don’t fight me. And don’t scream.”
The hand left her mouth, and the knife was removed, for now at least. Strange hands took hold of her arms and Faith found herself being turned to face her attacker. Suddenly, the strange voice made sense.
It was a man.'

In a place where all men are considered the enemy...
"Dashing in the opposite direction of everyone else, Faith had to fight her way through the crowd of students, like a salmon swimming upstream. Once she reached the stairway at the end of the corridor, the crowding eased and she was able to sprint up to the floor above with no more delay. Skidding to a stop in front of her dorm room, she thrust her weight against the door and burst in.
It wasn’t empty.
Standing at the opposite end was one of the Danforth Academy’s drudges sweeping the floor. Faith shuddered to a halt, her stunned expression mirroring his.
The fact she could see his expression doubled her shock. Drudges always, always, had their faces covered. It was law. These men were only allowed to exist within Bellator because they weren’t classed as men. They served its women, and their entire role depended on them completing their tasks unnoticed. The drudge’s naked face was an act of sedition, punishable by death. Yet his shock suggested it wasn’t an intentional act of rebellion.
It wasn’t an unpleasant face. In truth, the male face was not unlike her own. Narrow cheekbones framed intelligent-looking eyes, and the mouth was pleasantly curved. As she continued to stare, the drudge’s face coloured, with embarrassment or, more likely, fear. Slowly, he reached down to his belt, where he had tucked his mask.
Within seconds, he had donned it, hiding the lower part of his face. Faith could now only see his eyes. She found herself staring into their depths, unable to move. And then the drudge ducked his head and continued to sweep the floor as though she wasn’t there.
Remembering the time, Faith moved past him to her desk, tapping on the datadev to activate it. The vital homework was still on the screen. Pressing her wristclip to the Transfer symbol at the top of the screen, she waited until it beeped, indicating the file had been copied to her portable device. Satisfied she’d be okay now, as long as she moved fast, she turned to leave.
As she reached the door, she turned one last time to find the drudge was staring at her again. Faith offered him a small smile before stepping into the hallway and closing the door. As she hurried down the hall, she realised she was shaking."

'“What?” Sophia was staring at her.
Faith sped up, hurrying ahead to get a closer look inside the store. As she passed the newspaper depot, several things happened at once. The line of Danforth students turned the corner ahead of them, disappearing into the street beyond. The final newspaper seller, a girl with short, flame-red hair, stepped into the street, a stack of papers clutched in her arms. The door of the depot slammed sharply, the sound echoing around the almost empty street.
And then the door to the food store was wrenched open and a figure darted onto the pavement.
Something about her was strange. As Faith stared, she noticed the woman was shabbily dressed, the shirt she wore patched and worn, as well as very old fashioned. She carried a large pack on her back which looked like it weighed her down and Faith felt bad that she didn’t have a comcar waiting at the kerb to help her transport the goods home.
And then, from behind her came a second figure. This one too, wore clothes which were old and shabby, but as Faith stared, she registered something else. This person had a much broader build than the first. Like her, this figure was laden down with a pack, but she had a hat pulled low over her forehead and a dark scarf wound loosely around her neck. Beside Faith, Sophia gasped and grabbed hold of her arm. The figure carried a gun.
And then, as Faith looked more closely at the face of the second figure, she understood. It wasn’t a woman at all. It was a man.'

"The needle loomed closer, seeming larger than usual. As the technician bent over her, the heavy floral scent she wore assaulted Faith’s senses. What had the woman said her name was? Margaret? Maisie? Faith had forgotten already. She bit the inside of her cheek, trying not to gag. Staring upwards at the ceiling, she willed herself not to flinch. She had done this before. So many times, she’d forgotten. But it never got any easier.
The blood tests were a part of life. Vital for the girls who attended Danforth Academy. It was a privilege to be a student at the school, and came with many benefits, but the flip side was the regular testing.
Still, it was worth it. A Danforth girl was special."

A must read for fans of Tomorrow, When the War Began, Red Dawn and The Hunger Games.
"She didn’t know why she was still allowing herself to believe such fairytales. Most of the evidence pointed to Noah using her as a source of information, only to betray her to his Eremus family when the time was right. Part of her didn’t blame him. So far, she could see what he had told her about Eremus was true. It had to be hard to live like this. Who could blame them for trying to gain a better life? Still, the betrayal stung."

She must have drifted off, but when she woke later in the day, Faith felt woozy. The lantern still burned in the corner of the cave, allowing them to see one another, but the shadows it cast were eerie and, in Faith’s opinion, hadn’t improved the situation.
Sophia was bending over her, a concerned expression on her face. “You alright?”
“What?”
“You’re burning up a little.”
“M’okay.” Faith struggled to sit up. “At least, I think I am. The world’s kind of… spinning.”

"As Noah wandered back through the woods, he felt exhaustion overtake him. The night had been long and draining. After his close shave with the guard, he’d spent the rest of his shift crouched on the tree branch on high alert. There had been no sign of anyone else, and Noah got the impression the Bellator patrol was a small one. By dawn, however, his body ached from the effort. When his replacement had arrived, he’d clambered down from the tree with barely a word."

'“I suppose,” Faith began, dropping her voice lower, “though we might have a hard time convincing some of the others to–”
“Hush!” Sophia hissed, as a telltale scraping outside signified someone was about to open the door. “Someone’s coming.”
The light from a lantern spilled into the cave as the large section of wood was pulled aside. Faith found herself blinking furiously. Once she had recovered, she glanced around at the others, automatically checking they were all okay. When she looked back at the door, a tall girl around Avery’s age was standing there. One of her arms was bound up in some kind of sling. Faith found herself wondering why.'

"This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series!

Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down.
Can't wait to read more of these.
