Do you know that where a person lives as they age is a crucial part of planning? The design of the home, whether a private residence or a senior living community, impacts how much a person declines. Our unique Enabling Design Approach helps reduce preventable long term care needs and expenses and is featured in a new Steadfast Insurance podcast.
Without a zero-threshold shower, if your financial planning and long term care insurance clients are older and need assistance they will be paying $100 per home health visit every time.
Financial planning and long term care insurance are crucial ways to make sure your clients can afford care, but:
-who wants to be dependent on others?
-who will provide care when we are in a growing caregiver shortage?
-why not reduce preventable frailty in the first place?
Schedule a call to learn how you can help your clients reduce preventable long term care and caregiving needs and expenses and enable them to THRIVE.
2 Old Women Did What I Was Afraid To Do
Today I rescued a hawk. I called Animal Control, and was referred to a non-profit wildlife rescue center. I drove the hawk to the center, where it is now being cared for.
But I could not have done it without the help of two women, age 75+, in my neighborhood.
Although I have captured injured birds in the past and taken them for rehabilitation, I was hesitant with a hawk. The woman at the non-profit rescue center was extremely firm about protecting myself.
Fortunately, two "elderly" neighbors who had experience helping all kinds of injured wildlife over their lives, were willing to get the injured hawk into an animal carrier if I was willing to drive it 15 miles out to the rescue center.
I would like to think that I would have done the whole thing if they had not been involved. I think so, but it would have been scary and nerve-wracking.
This event is a simple illustration of why we need to value the experience that comes with age. We also need to value multigenerational relationships because we all bring something important to the table--we give and receive and we are all better for it. ๐
What positive examples do you have to share?
-of the power of age, in your self or others?
-of multiple generations helping each other?
Places Designed for Seniors are NOT Designed for Seniors
Falls are the leading cause of injury for in the U.S. resulting in over 3 million ER visits and $50 BILLION in medical costs per year.
This carpeting is an example of dis-abling design. The pattern and intermittent blocks of color is not a choice for anyone with vision, neurological, or balance issues--all of which are more common among older adults. This carpeting is a feature that has the potential to increase the risk of falls, disorientation, and the need for assistance from an already limited and overworked workforce.
Just because a place is intended for seniors does not mean it is properly designed for them.
Design matters. Choose designs that enable people to be as independent as possible. Choose designs that enable people to THRIVE!
Call them. Send a card. Show up with a casserole. Send a gift certificate to a meal delivery service. Research services. Take a shift. Offer specific ways you can help. JUST HELP THEM.
During please take a few minutes to reach out to to listen, support them, and help them whether you are a relative, friend, neighbor, health care provider, etc., you can help them. Do so.
I was the primary for my mom for over 10 years. Despite the support from and co-caregiving with my husband and son, it was one of the hardest periods of my life. I could have used alot more support from family, friends, and both my and my mom's .
At times, I felt like I was drowning. It negatively impacted my health. I was committed to keeping my mom at home for as long as possible and succeeded by applying my Approach--she was able to delay moving to a facility by 5-7 years--keeping her in her home of choice and saving the family and the government between $500,000 and $1,000,000. She only moved to a facility when my care was not enough for her and it was too much for me. But caregiving demands don't end there, especially during our nation's shortage, family caregivers must help in providing actual care, not just managing finances and visiting their loved ones.

"Does this bathroom make me look old?"
Unfortunately, yes. This gorgeous bathroom has so much that's great for people of all ages and abilities, but poses challenges, especially for older adults. The shower curb, while quite small, can be a big issue. Why should anyone have to step up and down in a wet slippery environment?
Other issues:
-lack of grab bars (if they're there, everyone uses them)
-floor tile
-lack of contrast between floor tile and tub
All of these seemingly minor issues can take away your ability to be as independent as possible as you age. Who wants that?
But design-induced frailty can be prevented by the Enabling Design Approach. Message me if you'd like to learn how you can maintain your physical & financial independence as you age--by design.
"Does this make me look old?"
Yes this beautiful kitchen can unnecessarily contribute to age-related decline and age you. Why?
-the wall oven is too high
-the upper cabinets are too high
-the space lacks a lower height work surface
-working while seated on full height stools is awkward
-the lighting will create glare
All of these seemingly minor issues can take away your ability to be as independent as possible as you age. Who wants that?
But design-induced frailty can be prevented by the Enabling Design Approach. Message me if you are interested in learning how you can maintain your physical & financial independence as you age--by design.
