That time I got nominated for Two PrimeTime Emmy's as a Supervising Producer for "outstanding non-fiction specials". I proudly wore my Sri Lankan sari to the event. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be there. As I watch what is happening in Sri Lanka right now, I know the people in Lanka deserve better, and a brighter tomorrow is possible.

New Animated Film for Young Students Explores Refugee Displacement and the Power of Music to Inspire Hope, Healing 03/12/2021

Feeling so proud !!

It took a village of incredibly talented and passionate creative storytellers to bring this ambitious project to life. As an Executive Producer at the USC Shoah Foundation, putting this film out into the world is most special to me.

I was able to choose an international DREAM TEAM and lead it to complete this short stop motion animated film called " Music Dreams " that we can all be proud of. A labor of love to bring a story to communities that often don't get to see themselves.

Thank you to the USC Shoah Foundation for this opportunity to push ourselves, and thank you to my DREAM TEAM who made it all possible. I can't wait to share the full film with everyone. Until then, please do watch the trailer embedded in the article below.

I just found out that the first film I was one of the producers on for the USC Shoah Foundation just won Best Short Documentary at the Angels Doc Festival. I built the DREAM TEAM intentionally from Brown Girl Doc Mafia and I could not be prouder of what we were able to achieve together. Representation Matters, Authorship Matters.

Much Gratitude - Violet Feng , Victoria Chalk , Kia Hays , Drucilla Lawrence Rees, and everyone who contributed. xx

“We are who we are because of stories; without stories, we have no sense of what is right and wrong.” -Bryan Fine, Grandson Of Jewish Survivor

Two Sides of Survival brings together stories from the East and West during the late 1930’s and World War II period that share a traumatic yet incredible connection of resilience and survival. One story begins in Nanjing, where Japanese soldiers massacred Chinese civilians, and the other story, in Germany, where the N**i regime sought the systematic murder of Jewish populations in Europe and beyond. Both groups experience atrocities around the same time.
This film follows the little-known story of the more than 18,000 Jewish refugees that fled from Europe to Shanghai as a means of escape from the N**is. At the same time, a group of Europeans and American expatriates stayed in Nanjing and banded together to save 250,000 Chinese lives by building a safety zone. Three hundred kilometers apart, these survivors, from vastly different places, left a legacy of human connection and resilience for the next generation; this is “Two Sides Of Survival”.

the dream job I didn’t get.

I know most people post about their job wins on Linkedin/ social media. I thought I would share my experience about NOT getting my dream job. Two days before my 43rd birthday, I was headhunted by Netflix in LA. Later, I would find out that one of their Development Executives put me forward after meeting me at a virtual Netflix networking event where Brown Girls Doc Mafia members would attend, and I was one of them.

I will be forever grateful that I was put forward for a role that I would never have applied for because I don't have network experience. This is not for lack of desire or talent but for lack of opportunity. I rarely saw anyone like me in the over 20 years of working in non-fiction documentary production and development. The Development Executives I would be pitching and still do would predominately be white males or females.

Fast forward to my Netflix rocket ship adventure- over the course of three months, passing their creative tests and eight interviews later - I ultimately didn't make it to the final round, and I was truly gutted.

And I think it was because, for those three months, I felt extraordinary. Anytime I mentioned Netflix had headhunted me, it was like "WOW" now that is impressive-and I felt like they were thinking, well, you must be "someone to watch".

And while I didn't make it to that last round or get the job which ultimately would have been life-changing on so many levels. It made me realize what I thought wasn't possible could be possible, and no matter what, I am a unicorn, and no one can take that away from me 🙂.

Looking back I am grateful for the experience, for the emotional roller coaster it was; it also made me realize that I don't need my dream job to define or validate me; I can do that on my own.
I love the family my husband and I have created, and our two best productions, daughters Nyah (5) and Zaeya (3), teach me so much every day. I love our home, where our family of friends are always welcome, and I love the job I have now where my passion and my purpose drive me, and the fact that I love the people I collaborate with makes me grateful every day.

So all this is to say - "This Is Me." To all those who didn't get your dream job, I know what that feels like but know this is just the beginning, and don't ever give up. I know I won't.

Thank you to BGDM for all of your support and to all who were cheering me on along the way, and thank you to my family, who without I would be lost.

I love you very much xx

To infinity and beyond !!
