Hello Sunnyside Community,

I hope these last two weeks have been smooth sailing for you and your family as we resume school and plan for the next few weeks. If you have already filled out the Sunnyside form about winter absences, you do not have to go back and mark in Synergy per the district instructions. We have already done that for you. Just a reminder that there is no supervision before and after school so families, please have a plan for your students before 8:45 and after 3:15. After 3:15, our playground turns into Portland Parks and is open to all.

Today is the Winter Craft Fair and we are all very excited to welcome all of our young artists from Sunnyside who have been busy creating their masterpieces to sell. We are looking forward to celebrating the artistic talent of our students and other crafters as well. Thanks to the PTSA who have put this event together and thanks parents for always encouraging your young artists! We are looking forward to the next two weeks of school. I know that there have been questions about the week that was added, and I can assure you that our teachers will be creating engaging activities and we will be using that week to continue doing what we always do and engage the young minds and hearts of our Sunnyside students.

Happy Hanukkah to all those who celebrate as December 7th marks the first night of observation of the holiday. We look forward to celebrating December with all of you!

𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺!
In the Elementary, we have been busy this week making abstract blown Art with balloon pumps and liquid watercolor In addition, we made snowflakes and step-by-step drawings.

In Middle School, we have been creating with plasticine non-dry clay. We made monsters based on our fears, "clay paintings" of scenes that bring us peace, and tiny food.

THANK YOU for the marker and geometric stencil donations! We are still hoping for some letter stencils and bottles of liquid watercolors.

Dear Sunnyside Families,

It is so wonderful having students and teachers back in the building this week. Without the joy and laughter of this wonderful extended Sunnyside family, it was just quiet hallways and we missed you all.

I know there are many questions about the added back days and teacher conferences. Conferences will be held January 11th and 12th from 4-7pm and teachers will also be reaching out via their class newsletters to share additional times with families that they can attend a conference. Please note that teachers are being given about half the scheduled time for conferences for makeup, so please be patient as we try to catch up on communication with families. School will be held the first week of winter break, the 18-22nd of December. If your child will be absent any/all days that week, please fill out this form.

I wanted to let you know that a leaking steam pipe on the second floor damaged both some ceiling tiles and one of our library walls. Your students may report a noticeable smell, but we want to reassure you that our environmental health and safety team have confirmed that the damage poses no health or safety issues.

Out of an abundance of caution, we’ve closed the library to staff and students today – but we want to assure you that our risk assessment team has determined that there is no health risk.

A PPS facilities team will be in our building this weekend to address these issues. Workers will fill the crack in the leaking pipe and encase it with a specialized sealing bracket to prevent further deterioration. The impacted ceiling tiles and sheet rock will also be replaced, as soon as possible.

Thank you all for all your support and encouragement for our teachers and staff last month. We truly feel that Sunnyside is a special place that is made better through all of us coming together to support the learning and growth of our students.

Please, please PLEASE do not park in no parking zones or block crosswalks at ANY TIME around the school. We need to ensure our students can be seen while crossing the street. It's better to take the time and be a little tardy. This is an ongoing problem. The safety of our students it our highest priority.

Our beloved business manager, heart of the SES office, and long-time caretaker of our school community, Michelle Schaefle, is having a double-knee replacement next week. Meal Train for Michelle Schaefle Our beloved Michelle Schaefle, the heart of Sunnyside, is having double knee replacement surgery. She is on ice & elevate for two weeks at least. After years and years of Michelle taking care of all of us at SES, it is our turn to take care of her.

Dear Sunnyside Community,

I am grateful to be reaching out to you today with the news that our District and the Portland Association of Teachers have reached a tentative agreement. We are so excited to welcome your students back TOMORROW, Monday November 27th which will be a late opening. We’ve missed seeing everyone and know that the kids are also excited to be back in the classroom with their teachers and friends.

Below you will find information that will be helpful for you as you prepare your student to come back to school.

Reopening date/time: Classes will resume on Monday, November 27 on a two-hour delay, with all programs and services running as normal, including after school programs. Both breakfast and lunch will be served.

Changes to school calendar: The District and the Union have agreed to make up our 11 lost instructional time on the following days:

Dec 18-22 (previously week 1 of the winter break)

January 26 (previously a professional development day for staff)

February 19 (President’s Day holiday)

April 8 (previously a professional development day for staff)

June 12-14 (the dates set aside for inclement weather)

Quarter grading and conferences: Quarter 1 report cards will be available no later than Friday, December 8th. Information about rescheduled conference dates will be provided soon.

K-5: Borrowed Devices: Please be sure to send back any borrowed District technology when your students come back on the first day. Please bring directly to the school office.

6-12: Athletics and Extracurriculars: All athletics and extracurricular activities will resume as normal. High school and PIL Youth Sports schedules can be found here.

We want to express our gratitude for your patience, understanding, and support during this challenging time. We are eager for your students to return to Sunnyside and once again fill our halls with joy, learning, and laughter. Thank you for being an essential part of our school community.

(organized by Kindergarten families, open to all)

8:15 a.m. - Morning Circle / Greetings
8:30 - 10:30 a.m. - Marching + Art

Come out for screen printing, sign-making for stuffies (& humans), sidewalk chalk drawing, and bubbles. The word is the Kindergarten Squirrel Babies are also mad and might make an appearance.

Bring chalk, cardboard, and any light colored t-shirt or fabric (we're printing in PAT Blue) you want to print on - the image fits just right on a Kinder sized t-shirt! You can also print on a pillowcase, scrap of an old sheet or fabric square, or cardboard (you just want to avoid really textured materials like heavy canvas or denim). There will be community and music and even *tiny* signs to make for Stuffies who want to join the Strike line in solidarity with the Squirrels (if they come).

Heading into week 3 with such a chasm in the bargaining - any and all support we can show the inspiring educators who make SES the place it is - any hugs and presence is so welcomed if it's logistically possible. Let's make a River of Solidarity!!!

As we approach the eighth day of the strike, our team is reminded of how fortunate we are to be part of this community. Sunnyside families have our deepest gratitude and appreciation. You've supported one another in child care, joined marches, attended rallies, shared social media posts, and raised important questions about what it means to be a community school. Thank you, most sincerely.

This is a difficult time, filled with uncertainty and challenges. As strike captains, we want these days to matter. We want to see the schools our students deserve come to fruition. That's why we'll continue to show up each morning: for our students, for our families, for our community, and for our city. We anxiously await the day that we can return to our classroom community, knowing that we've achieved something spectacular: community schools, where every student knows that they belong, that they matter, and that their needs will be met. We can't wait to meet you there!

Dear Sunnyside Community,

We are on day three of a PAT teacher strike and I just want to reiterate how much Sunnyside values and cares for our teachers. I appreciate how this community shows up for our educators and I appreciate our educators and staff. As I watch our teachers teach and lead your students, I am inspired that our children are in the best possible hands to grow and learn. They truly make this world a better place and I am so lucky that I get to come to work every day and share space with people who care as deeply and are as talented as they all are. I am hoping for a swift and fair resolution for our educators and until then, I am missing the voices of your children in our hallways and classrooms.

Thanks to everyone who showed up this morning, and please keep coming back! Our schedule for tomorrow is the following: 💙 𝟴:𝟭𝟱𝗮𝗺: Teachers will gather and set off on a march around the neighborhood to busier streets (Chavez, Belmont, and Hawthorne). There was much chanting and sign dancing, and plenty of horn-honking from supportive drivers. 💙 𝟵:𝟬𝟬𝗮𝗺: Marchers will circle back to the school halfway through the morning to pick up folks who want to join in for a second round of marching. Every day, there will be tables and pop-up tents set up on the blacktop with coffee, snacks, and art supplies. We are hoping to have parents and caregivers sign up to work this station each day from 8:15–10:45, so that teachers and others can leave their backpacks and greet stragglers. 💙 STRIKE SUPPORT SIGN UP LINK IN BIO!
