Today on this teacher's day I remember the teachers I defied. Hindi sir called negative, Aravindan sir. Principal Sreedharamenon sir. Allow me to share an incident that occurred between Hindi sir and myself
The story of me melted away myself.
Plagiarism exists in all fields. Only a little more in literature and cinema. Plagiarism is not so trivial. Finding another word is very difficult. A creation takes birth in a mood. But such re-enactment is not limited to one mood. So don't underestimate Deepa teacher, Sunil Ilayidam and Chintha Jerom. Below is a copy story.
In 1975/76, my brother Jayan (JAYARAM) studied at Kollam Thangassery Infant Jesus Anglo Indian School (IJHS THANGASSERY) from age five until he completed 11th grade at Madom (ST. MARGRET GIRLS HS KANJIRACODE/Kanjirakode). The school magazine was elegant and when he finished his studies, the magazines were kept in an old metal military box. I enjoyed flipping through these magazines when I had the chance. The same box was also used by Chettan in School Boarding (FORDS) and until last year, it was kept at our family home/tharavad. Through this magazine, I became familiar with Olympian Suresh Babu and T C Yohanna . There was also a separate section for Hindi.
I remember that Suresh Babu was Chettan's classmate. Later when I came to Kollam Fatima for pre-degree, Suresh Babu was there for a degree course. One day, my brother told me to get acquainted with him, and we became close friends. Later, while Maya and I were standing in Ernakulam R T office, TC and Tinu were in front of us. TC was taken to IJHS for a while. I asked with the natural exuberance of a Malayali, "Is Chettan's Olympic bus still plying in Kundara?" In that magazine, what I liked the most was the love story, which was written with movie titles. I joined NSS College Kottiyam in 1975 for B.Com and saw the notice inviting entries for the magazine. Potty, a good friend and a good cricketer was in the class and on the college team. Another classmate and friend from Kundara ALIND township Jayant Menon was also in this team. NSS College Kottiam reached the final round of the Kollam League. Many people left after the final year exam, so they could not play the final. Unfortunately, Potty is also no more. Potty and I gave two brown envelopes to Hindi Sir, nicknamed the Negative by Sasikumar, a young mimicry artist. Hindi Sir has a slightly darker complexion, grey head, and moustache and wears a white shirt and dhoti. He was like a negative image in a dark room. Sasi lft us immaturly. One day, we were called by the Negative through Gopi Pillai. The brown envelopes were returned to us, surprising us as we hadn't expected them back. "Don't plagiarize," Sir advised us with a slight smile.
Walking back musty, I opened the cover of the potty and the potty opened mine. I want to know about what potty had scribbled. We kept the love story intact and the same as we copied in the same magazine.
I looked at Potty and Potty looked at me. We detonated the guffaw. While walking, Potty said a little loudly: "Fool" When I heard this, my laughter doubled. The negative was a fool as he did not accept the potty's contribution to the magazine. If only one gentleman was given the article, maybe it would be printed. Years later, the story Kaka/Crow written by Maya was carefully packed on a brown cover for printing in the Silver Jubilee Souvenir of the Alind Welfare Fund. I remembered the negative while handing it over to Secretary Prabhakaran Nair Chettan. Both my cartoons are inked in this souvenir. Two of my paintings were adorned on the library wall at Fatima College Kollam. Kudos /Nallanamaskaram to the DEEPA teacher who gave me the opportunity to write this here. Vijayan Annan taught us that Namaskars are good and bad.
Negative and I in Hindi class
My second language was Hindi. Mahakavi Pala Narayan Nair Sir was the head of the department of Malayalam. He was also the vice-principal. Let me tell you about an incident that hurt the great poet.
In Hindi classes, Mamachan and I were on the back bench. The back benches are always in a play mood, and laughter and noise continue unabated. .B.Com's first-year class was a headache for the principal. So the negative was not strong enough to touch the rowdy first-year class (six of whom were later dismissed, including myself...that's covered in another blog).
He Looked up the backbenchers. The class continued with his head down again. One day when it became unbearable, he made me and Mamachan stand up. Both of them were asked to come to the front bench. Our age was to say and do anything and had a mind of kuderarian.
Me: "Can't be there now"
I doubt that the negative was paled and stuck
The class fell silent. I kept standing and said that I was studying by paying fees and sat down without waiting for permission. Later, even in a single Hindi class, he did not look at the faces of both of us and did not think that there were two beings in the class. Totally ignored. The Hindi language was in the first year only. And so the exam came. The result came. In the Hindi exam, there were only two students passed. Me and someone else. A week after the result came, I was leaning on a pillar alone on a veranda one afternoon when a hand touched my shoulder from behind. Negative! Love in the face ?????.... "You will learn even if you don't obey".....I just gave a smile. Again pat on the back "Good luck"
Hindi sir turned around and walked away. The incident happened forty-two years ago. Even though many students of engineering colleges came in front of us raging and ragging, we could not see them as miscreants or terrorists. But when I saw the pain of their parents I thought, Kesava Pillai and Indira Devi how these situations must have gone through. If any mother had ever been humiliated or dishonoured in Alind Township, it was probably my mother. I was the reason.
