Aligning with Life

Happy Mother’s Day all you amazing moms out there!

I have been thinking, as most people do, that these are chaotic times. But I have changed my mind about that. They were not so much chaotic as they are stormy, and storms are necessary in nature. They don’t just occur in the weather, either; they also occur in our psyches and in culture.

We have a very dysfunctional attitude towards stormy weather - emotionally, psychologically and also socially. You can’t stop the rain, even if you want to. And storms are a part of nature.

Storms in the inner life as well as storms within society are needed. They are part of life’s ecosystem. They aren’t something to suppress but rather something to learn some. They cleanse and they reveal. And in the end, they nourish new growth.

Even the storms occurring due to climate change are revealing something that needs to be revealed, teaching us something we need to be taught and warning us about something we need to be aware of. We have treated the earth, our democracy, each other and ourselves with such a lack of reverence. Of course the storms are upon us.

Every life is a microcosm of the larger cosmic drama. So if you were going through a storm right now, do not despair. Hunker down. Seek shelter in love, nature, art and literature and spiritual practice. Most importantly of all, honor the radical profundity of your own psyche and trust its processes. Do not buy into the culture bu****it that would tell you something is wrong with you. Nothing is wrong with you. Life is not always easy but that doesn’t make it less glorious.

You have to grieve when you have to grieve, face things when you have to face things, and change some things when you have to change things. But there is something magnificent on the road up ahead and for reasons you perhaps cannot see now, what you are going through is necessary. You are learning to forgive yourself and others, you’re cracking open, you are evolving to the next stage of who you are capable of being.

What America is going through is necessary. What the world is going through is necessary. Keep your eyes on the road and know you are accompanied by angels as you travel. Most all of us are feeling the rain these days, but the rainbow will appear in time.
