Painting has become one of my passions because every piece I have ever done has a story and inspiration behind it. Each person looks at a painting with a different perspective, thought and feeling. I believe that c

C O U R A G E. T O. I M M I G R A T E
(L A K A S. N G. L O O B. M A G. I M M I G R A T E.)”

This painting tells the story of how my parents bravely and courageously immigrating from the Philippines to Canada gave me the courage and bravery to immigrate as well.
When the time came for us to move
from Saskatoon, our birth town to
Calgary, our hometown.
We knew we could do it and we would be okay even though we were scared.

My family along with many other families in the
Filipino- Saskatoon Community had shown me it was possible.
You all influenced and shaped who I am today.
Your ripple effect of choosing to pave a new path of life,
positively shaped the community in Saskatoon and therefore anywhere we all may go.
I take the lessons I learned from all of you and try to practice them daily.
It shaped how I teach, how I live and how I love and care for others.
I am me because of the strong Filipino traditions and teachings I learned at
Home, Tagalog School, Community parties, Folkfest community and our interconnected relationships.

As many people of our community are no longer with us today and are loving and supporting us from heaven or have immigrated to different places all over the world
I want you to know that their memory has been imbedded in this painting
because you reading this and remembering them is the feeling of why I painted this.
I took the memories of a lifetime and put my heart, soul and adventure into it.

The flowers are strong symbols of the places that have shaped and influenced who we are.
The white flowers represents the Philippine National flower the Sampaguita
that symbolizes strength and hope.
The orange/peach flowers represents the Saskatchewan Provincial flower, the Prairie Lily
that symbolizes renewal.
The light beige flowers represents the Alberta Provincial flower, the Wild Rose
that symbolizes immortal love and union.
The four leaves represents my heart, soul, adventure and dream.
The sun is a reminder that even behind the clouds the sun will always shine.

Lastly I leave you with the reminder that:

“E N D L E S S. L O V E
(W A L A N G. H A N G G A N G. P A G I B I G.) ”

I’m so proud this painting got to be part of the first ever Filipino exhibit at Western Development Museum in Saskatoon to celebrate Kalayaan 2024.

This is a tribute to my parents.
They immigrated to Canada from the Philippines in 1975.
They started paving the path for the life I am privileged to have today.
They bravely and courageously sacrificed so much so that one day
my siblings and I could follow our own heart, soul and adventure.
Thank you for this life.

“ Q U E E N. O F. O U R. H E A R T S
(R E Y N A. N G. A T I N G. P U S O)”

I’m so proud this painting got to be part of the first ever Filipino exhibit at Western Development Museum in Saskatoon.

This painting tells the story of Mama.
She is the Queen of our Hearts.
She loves to play solitaire.
She loves to take care of all.
She is the most caring and kind person ever.
She gives the warmest and most healing hugs.
And she is the one who will tell you to follow your dream.

Our family painted this painting together at Mama’s 96th birthday.
We each left our mark as our fingerprint on this painting
to represent each story that is interconnected as our Family.
Mama is the heart of our family.
We love you Mama.

Let’s be explorers!

🎨✨ Try different art forms like drawing, painting, or sculpting to find the one that resonates with you.

Nurturing Your Art Tip Thursday!

Here’s what I experienced:
✨I tried the forms that sparked my curiosity and intrigue
✨my first impression of many art forms was not great, I had to try it a few times
✨ I approached a new medium with the mindset of “how would my kids play with this”
✨I borrowed mediums from friends
✨I bought the cheapest version of the medium I wanted to try as a starting point then upgraded if I liked it
✨I always wait for a sale or coupon to buy new things

Things I would try:
✨ drop in art space
✨search for free events like photo walk
✨check out art festivals like .yyc to help you see lots of different styles of art
✨ask: why do I like this? Why don’t I like this? Am I willing to keep practicing even though I’m frustrated?

I really want to try pottery this year I’m putting this out there so I book a class with you!

What art form would you want to try?

I am so glad you are reading this post. 🤗

I will be posting a series of ideas on Thursdays that I found helpful when nurturing my art practice. I hope it can help you too and open the conversation in our community to support each other in challenges we face. I have always believed that when we come together in community we can create beautiful things. I am going to explore this idea and see what happens. Come join me!

✨ Set aside a specific time each day to practice your art.

What I experienced:

❄️this was easier said than done
❄️ I had to change other habits and mindset to be successful at this one
❄️I had to define what success meant to me
❄️ it has taken me years to find my discipline and consistency and it changes with the season
❄️practicing my art doesn’t always mean I am painting, sometimes I am observing, sometimes I am ideating
❄️I am learning and that will be frustrating at times
❄️practice = progress (it’s ok if it take time)
❄️communicating with the people who will support me and asking for help was hard
❄️coaching myself to know that 10 min of courage will make a difference in my practice.
❄️setting an alarm on my phone or watch helped

I would love to hear your thoughts on this idea.

"Waves of Grace" speaks to the universal truth that, in life's grand tapestry, we encounter both moments of celebration and trials to be overcome. The waves symbolize the creative and ever-evolving nature of the human spirit, offering reassurance that every challenge, no matter how daunting, can be navigated with ingenuity and grace.
"Waves of Grace," is a testament to the essential need for grace in our life's journey. It is a call to embrace life's unpredictability and to find solace in the fact that our story is seen, heard, and felt by the world. This painting exudes peace, excitement, and hope for the future, and it serves as a poignant reminder that, amidst the unpredictable waves of existence, we are all part of a larger, interconnected story.
In "Waves of Grace," Krystelle has created a visual poem that encourages us to celebrate the highs and gracefully weather the lows. It inspires us to dance with life's rhythm, to embrace the ever-changing narrative of our existence, and to find hope and tranquility in knowing that, ultimately, grace is the key to unlocking the beauty of our journey.

"Growing in Time," emphasizes that growth is a lifelong journey, whether it be the growth of a child within a mother's womb or the growth of an individual's identity and self-acceptance. It reminds us that, while motherhood is a profound and transformative experience, it does not define a person entirely.

Each individual is unique and multi-faceted, with their own passions and desires. It encourages the viewer to embrace their true self, to pursue the things they love, and to remember that, in addition to being a mother, they are also a human with their own dreams and aspirations.

"Growing in Time" is a testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit, the boundless love of a mother, and the eternal connection between personal growth and the ever-changing seas. It encourages all to navigate life's tides with grace and optimism, to cherish the moments of challenge and change, and to embrace the limitless potential of each new day.

Acrylic Paint on Circle Canvas (29.5” diameter)

I listened to track one: welcome to the confluence. (Which you can find at www.fortcalgary.com/exploring-the-confluence) I hope you listen to this track as you look at my paintings and feel the words spoken by Troy Patenaude and Allison Graham. Their words set a strong tone to opening up the conversation of “Reimagining Fort Calgary”. We would not be here without these stories and experiences.

In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge that we live, work and play on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut'ina Nation, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.

“G R O W I N G. T O G E T H E R.
in N A A P I’S. G A R D E N”
is a community created art installation.
During the opening reception I will be inviting attendees to create a painting together.
For this exhibition I wanted to learn more about and the stories of the past, present, future.
I am on the journey to learn about the influences, culture, diversity, and challenges of this place.

I love telling stories through my paintings, I love finding the meaningful points that make you feel and think about the piece. I love creating community pieces where people have the opportunity to interact and talk stories. You have the opportunity to leave your mark. I think that it is really cool way to tell the story of the past, present and future.

With the guidance of Melrene Saloy, The Art Spot and Fort Calgary Indigenous Advisor, I learned about Naapi’s Garden. Please go to this link to begin learning about the story of Naapi’s Garden and the plants that are natural and indigenous to the prairie landscape.
www.buffalotreaty.com/flux/naapis-garden-a-guide-to-culturally-important-blackfoot-plants (link is in my bio)

I love creating interactive community pieces because it is my hope and intention to let people know that they are part of some thing bigger. I believe that when we create in community it gives each of us an opportunity to acknowledge and learn about each other’s past, present, and future. It is a space to create something beautiful together and truly figure things out together, to reconcile and grow together.

I love flowers and they have always been one of my favourite subject matters to paint. When we moved to Calgary from Saskatoon we lived downtown and the river view was one that I experienced every day, it was one that inspires many of my paintings. The theme for this exhibition was to respond to Fort Calgary and the feeling of the area. For me that was the river and so here you can see the confluence of the Bow river and Elbow river where there is so much historical significance to the spot for Indigenous people. Here is where I began to learn about Naapi’s Garden and the significance of the plants that are natural and indigenous to the prairie landscape. This photo and place is one of my inspirations for my pieces at the .yyc art exhibition. Opening reception is this Saturday, July 29 from 12 PM to 6 PM and the exhibition will be up until November 9.

I painted this one to help me feel grounded and balanced. It was inspired by the roots of trees that are anchored to the ground and has an expansive reach where the energy and nutrients can flow through you and help you grow. Even in dormant cold conditions trees can survive and will flourish again in another season. 🌲🌲🌲🌲
