One Ton Tomato is an eclectic blend of Salsa, Mambo and Latin Jazz featuring Dr. Marc Gilley (Saxophone), Brian Smith (Bass), Greg Hankins (Piano), Dr. Todd Mueller (Latin Percussion) and Tony “Doc” McCutchen (Drum Set). Most of these musicians came together after their involvement in the UGA Salsa Band to satisfy their love for this type of music and to perpetuate the performance of this exciting
, energetic and audience- friendly style of music. The Name of the Group: as you may have guessed, the name “One Ton Tomato” is derived from the often misunderstood lyrics to one of the world’s most famous Salsa hits by Celia Cruz: “Guantanamera.”
The Repertoire: Many of the most well-known Latin Jazz and Salsa figures are represented: Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Poncho Sanchez, Michel Camilo, Mongo Santamaria, Ray Baretto, and Cal Tjader as well as Brazilian Bossa Nova/Jazz by Antonio Carlos Jobim and others. You will also hear creative, original arrangements of Jazz standards that will please your palate, whether your interest is in dancing or simply enjoying the Latin grooves.
