It's almost time for the October ACT tests. Due to the pandemic, the ACT will look different this year.
If you or your student is taking the ACT this month, please carefully review this note from Mrs. Kramer.
You can find a PDF copy of the document in the link in our bio.
OHS Football players and some members of our 10th grade class had the opportunity to hear from Marty Burlsworth, brother of the late Brandon Burlsworth.
Brandon was a walk-on for the in the 1990s and was eventually selected to play on the 1998 College Football All-American Team.
According to Lindsey Baskin, OHS 10th grade English teacher, "It [Brandon's chances at a scholarship at U of A] was a long shot, and many people doubted him. He worked extremely hard and eventually earned a scholarship as well as a chance to play. By his senior year, he was the captain of the Razorbacks football team and was drafted to play in the NFL by the Colts."
"He is an inspiration for athletes and students, and from Brandon's life, anyone can learn that hard work and dedication do pay off in the long run," said Baskin.
Due to an opening in Dardanelle’s schedule, Ozark will be able to make up the 4A-4 conference matchup that was canceled earlier in the year this Friday night at Dardanelle with a 7 pm kickoff.
Seating will be limited - OHS will release ticket information via social media ASAP.
Go, Hillbillies - Beat the Sand Lizards!

OHS Faculty Spotlight | Coach Olivia South
Assistant Volleyball Coach & OKC Virtual Teacher
Coach South just started her fourth year of teaching at Ozark Kindergarten Center and her first-year assistant coaching Lady Hillbilly Volleyball. She played volleyball for Alma High School. “I loved it [volleyball]. I played basketball as well. Volleyball was my favorite. It just brought me such joy to play, and I am really excited that I get to watch these girls love it like I loved it. That’s the best part of it,” said Coach South.
In addition to teaching and coaching, she is wife to Preston and mom to three-year-old Wyatt. Time with Wyatt means lots of T-ball, both outdoors and in. Coach South is the fourth of six siblings, and her mom has had the biggest influence in her life. “She’s really helped bring me up to know Jesus and helped me get through the challenges we’ve had in our life,” said Coach South.
In her free time, she likes to just sit, watch a new show, or read a book. She is currently reading GIRL STOP APOLOGIZING by Rachel Hollis.
By way of advice to students, Coach South said, “Keeping going forward. Outside in life you’re gonna face challenges that are difficult and things aren’t always going to come easy. So, if you can work on the things that are hard now in school it’s going to prepare you for life beyond high school, beyond junior high…get friends who are going to motivate you to be the best version of yourself.”

OHS New Faculty Spotlight | Ms. Kristin Middleton
Science Teacher
Ms. Middleton launched her teaching career in the middle of the pandemic. She was thankful that the pandemic happened in the middle of her internship because she had the opportunity to walk through the process alongside another teacher and was exposed to educational technologies. “It’s been kind of crazy, but it’s honestly less crazy than I anticipated,” said Ms. Middleton.
Her favorite thing about working at OSD is the atmosphere and people, including the students. “I never feel like I can’t go ask somebody something,” said Ms. Middleton.
She started working when she was 16 and worked her way through college. She attended the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith (UAFS) with the intention of going to medical school. After a while, something did not feel right, so she re-kindled a childhood dream of teaching and is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction.
Her teachers and professors have had the biggest influence in her life because they went beyond making sure her work was done. “My senior year, I got into a car accident...I wasn’t at school which was really unlike me,” said Ms. Middleton. Her English teacher checked in to make sure she was okay. “They went above and beyond kind of what was expected. I was really grateful to find professors at UAFS that did that too,” said Ms. Middleton.
If she could give her 13-year-old self advice, she would tell herself to enjoy life more. “I was always one of those kids that was like school, school, school...I would spend a lot of my time like doing my school work and making sure it was perfect and studying and making sure I got good grades. I spent way too much time letting the grade I got define me,” said Ms. Middleton.
In her free time, she enjoys mystery novels and hammocking but hates doing the dishes.
OHS New Faculty Spotlight | Ms. Alexandra Lemp
Art Teacher
Ms. Lemp is teaching her passion. “I love art because it connects to everything because a lot of art is about responding to your environment, so that means that it’s responding to what’s going on in politics and civics and it uses a lot of math, especially geometry. Some artists are very focused on math, and it informs their work a lot. I personally love history, and history informs art, and art informs history,” said Ms. Lemp.
Ms. Lemp’s path to teaching was not what she expected. She was a part of the first class to graduate from the University of Arkansas School of Art. Due to her love of art and history, she majored in art education and minored in history and planned to pursue a Master of Art in Teaching for social studies.
She anticipated going straight into teaching after finishing her undergraduate degree. Instead, she spent two years as a substitute teacher and worked on her graduate education. Due to some issues with prerequisites and some encouragement from her sister and a professor, she instead pursued a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and is scheduled to graduate in May. “I think it is a much better fit and I think I’ve learned a lot more and grown a lot more as an educator in this program than I would have in the MAT program,” said Ms. Lemp.
If her life had an autobiography, it would be called “One Day at a Time.” This is a reflection of her relationship with her dad who would always tell her to “make a list and take it one day at a time.” Ms. Lemp’s parents instilled in her the importance of education. From the time she was four years old, she would tell people that she was getting a four-year degree. This was no small feat for Ms. Lemp. She could not speak understandably until she was four because she has dyspraxia, a neurological condition that impacts the ability to plan and process motor tasks and language.
Originally from Sterling Heights, Michigan, Ms. Lemp is a self-described academic and nerd who enjoys documentaries, non-fiction books, and the Percy Jackson series.
We are proud of our alumni and their scholarship accomplishments!
Thank you, Arkansas Gas Association, Ozark Area Chamber of Commerce, and Ozark Rotary.
