One of the great things about being an artist in Canada is the deep pocket for independent creation. I've always felt supported enough to make whatever music that called to me, to follow the light whichever way it sparkled, to stumble along the path however dark, to follow the metaphors however mixed. My new project is somewhere past the middle mark, now mixing, at the part where I wonder if what I'm hearing are songs and if the sounds I put together make music. The theme is something self conscious about me trying to help...to help myself...to help others. The past few years have changed things and the new album will show that. It's different now. I'm different now. Still myself but different. And because you're different too, you'll see even more.
I went on tour with a goat. A goat, two parrots, three blind mice and a monkey named Iris. You'd think the monkey would be the most interesting but it was actually the parrots. The parrots argued constantly, which would upset the monkey. This made her get fussy and fling things: bananas, toys, and the three blind mice if they happen to be rehearsing their barbershop quartet. I know what you're thinking, that "you'd need four blind mice for a quartet" and that's true and that's one of the things the parrots argued about - who of the two would be the fourth. So they set up a contest. A singing contest, going town to town by train. Whistle stops, they called them. When we'd reach a small town station and they opened the band car doors, the mice would start and the parrots would each sing a verse. The song would end and Iris the monkey would run the applause-o-meter. Sometimes there'd be big crowds like this and some small. The goat - Billy, of course - was the audience stand-in for the really sparse crowds or the lacklustre ones. He could rouse them with his enthusiastic bleat. That dream had a banner that flapped in the breeze that read The Contest.
The answer is Yes, I've been working on something. I don't know how long it'll take but I know where it comes from and I know where it's going. I know what it says and I know that it needs to be said. It's just taking a while to get it from there to here and it's taking time to learn the language to say it. I'm enjoying the trip though and since it's just you and me, I hope that's okay because that's what it is.
Thank you chums, for a lovely and funny house concert. It was beautiful to hear Fraser Anderson live and wonderful treat for me to perform again. Thank you hosts Lianne and Phil!
Making a record is arguably super dumb these days. Luckily, making a what-the-heck-kinda-record-is-this is a much better idea. Right? Tell me to be brave.
Tonight in TO, lovers.
Inexpertly recorded and inelegantly performed experiments about keeping it together.
How's this for a description of a possible pandemic home studio album? Enticing?
My covid-encouraged studio experiments have catapulted me into songwriting production chaos. Whenever I hesitate to press record I remember my ancient friend Chris Tait laughing with previous advice to "just open your face and let the sound fall out.". So that's an update on what I'm doing. Doubting and then opening my face.
Maybe this sage will help.
Take it easy today.
What a fabulous experience last night. It was a real treat performing my first standup set, and Yawd Sylvester sandwiched between that and my music set was delicious. Thank you to an audience of friendly faces brimming with the spirit of adventure.
"Toronto-based singer/songwriter Arlene Bishop has long been praised for her witty stage banter as well as her poetic material. She is about to make her standup debut at a hometown dinner show at Mandy's Bistro tonight (April 21). After her monologue (entitled Welcome to the Apocalypse), another gifted songsmith, Yawd Sylvester, has a set, followed by a more traditional Bishop set. Highly recommended. Tix here."
Thank you, Kerry Doole
