Our Story

Hawai'i in War and Peace begins in 1944 when the propeller plane (that carries me to Kamehameha Schools) at the end of Kaua'i Kids in Peace and War lands in Honolulu. Big adjustments: military uniforms, shoes, regulations, racism between GIs and locals. After the war a driving trip on continental USA reveals "whites only" water fountains and bathrooms, anti-Semitism at hotels, and other racism. I worried about fitting in. My goal was to be a fisherman. My parents had other ideas. I went to Stanford and life changed again.
