LoriAnn Miera works in the Accounting department at Associated Asphalt in Santa Fe where she does payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable. We have been lucky enough to have her for 26 years. “I started working at the scales for three years with Jay Jones and moved to the finance department in 2000,” said Lori.

When asked what the best part of the job is, she said, “I really enjoy working with customers and building a good rapport with them, and that goes for coworkers as well. I also like receiving moolah even if it’s not my own." She also mentioned that she misses seeing Mr. Cook (El Jefe) around - that it’s just not the same without him. We can all agree on that one.

Lori was born in Fairview, NM. She’s a proud New Mexican and proud of our diverse culture. You might not know that when she’s not at work she enjoys music (ALL genres), movies (particularly war types), and the theater (she’s an avid fan of Phantom of the Opera). She would love to travel to see more of our beautiful Earth when she retires which she hinted may be soon.

She said, “I wear my heart on my sleeve and am an open book. I believe and live by the “Golden Rule” to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Employee Spotlight - Patrick (Pat) Martinez is the Aggregates and Asphalt Production Manager for Espanola Mercantile Company. He’s been with us for three years this April.

Martinez coordinates manufacturing operations of raw materials starting at the quarries to feed our asphalt and concrete operations. He also oversees asphalt production operations. “Aggregates and asphalt are at the core of our operations. It’s what we do, it’s what we live for,” said Martinez.

Martinez explained that he loves that it’s a fast-paced position and no two days are alike. He enjoys the challenge of sorting out complex challenges both in daily operations and strategizing for the future. He said, “I enjoy working with our crews; growing and developing our operational teams is fulfilling. We also have a strong and committed group of leaders.” He also enjoys networking with customers.

Martinez started as a crusher groundsman with James Hamilton Company at 16 years old. Later he attended Saint Louis University, earning a bachelor’s in economics and an MBA with a concentration in finance. He’s worked in various industries including commercial aviation, aerospace, automotive, and construction. “I started in quarries and materials and returned to it; it’s still my favorite line of work,” said Martinez.

As a self-professed rockhound, he’s logged over 10,000 hours as a 988 loader operator and over 2.5 million down-hole feet of blast hole drilling. He said, “I love rocks. I have been collecting them my whole life. In my spare time, I read about rocks, think about rocks, and go for walks hunting for rocks.”

Some of his favorite quotes are also the rules he lives by, including
“The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing; Hope is not a plan. Can’t never could, couldn’t never tried; Measure twice, cut once; Waste no time in beginning; and Knowing is better than thinking.”

We are grateful for all your hard work, Pat!

We had a great time at the CONEXPO-CON/AGG - North America's largest construction trade show for those involved in the construction, aggregates, and ready mixed concrete industries.

This year's event crushed expected attendance numbers, drawing over 139,000 construction and fluid power professionals from 133 countries and featured over 27 product categories, 2,400+ exhibitors, and 175+ education sessions, spread over 3 million square feet of exhibit space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Until next year!

Employee Spotlight - Dave Schnaidt

Dave is the maintenance superintendent and has been with the companies for over 31 years. If you ask him how long, he’ll say, “too long.”

Dave has been in construction since 1971. He started with his mechanic license in aviation but couldn’t get into aviation back then. He worked his way up the entire construction chain, having worked as an operator, truck driver, has done dirt work and asphalt, and now works as a mechanic. He’s done it all.

Chord Bowles is Dave’s protégé and said one great trait about Dave is his ability to fabricate items from his imagination. He can think of something that might help with a job or a tool to help repair a piece of equipment and then sets his mind to building that item. Chord says it is incredible how he can create something from a thought in his head, and they work!

He also says Dave is a great teacher and has taught him much about the mechanics of heavy equipment. Chord came from an automotive background and had little experience working on heavy equipment. He says Dave has taken the time to teach him how to fix the equipment and appreciates his patience.

Dave loves to hunt and fish. He says he doesn’t get enough opportunities, but he did get a big buck this year.

Dave has threatened to retire every year for the past 7-8 years and never does it. He enjoys the job too much to retire, and we are very happy to keep him.

26/12/2022

We will be closed Dec 26 - Jan 2 for the holidays. We wish you a happy and safe holiday season.

Employee Spotlight - Loretta Archuleta is the Lead Dispatch at Espanola Transit Mix and has been with the company for 36 years.

She said the best part of the job is helping customers to beautify their yards. “I especially love hearing positive feedback from the customer on how nice everyone has been from the people answering the phones, to the loader-man, to the drivers delivering the material. That makes me proud to run such a great team.”

Loretta is also in charge of providing quotes to government entities, and construction companies with project bids. She said, “I have met good people and have made many friends in these 36 years.”

Loretta supervises 10 employees. “I get to boss a lot of men around. You can’t get any better than that. All kidding aside, they are a great group and help make my job easier.”

She told us, “I used to love those Saturday mornings back in the day when Mr. Cook would come in and sit with us. He’d tell us stories from the past and would make us laugh. He was an inspiring and wonderful person we all greatly miss.”

When she’s not at work, Loretta loves to be with her family. “I have been married to my wonderful husband, Leo, for 39 years. We have been blessed with two exceptional children, Ashley and Brandon. We have been even more blessed with three beautiful grandchildren, Matthew, Alexis, and Braydyn.

I love spending time with my family, especially going on road trips or movies. I also enjoy working in our yard in the summer. Leo even bought us a tractor, so we don’t have to work so hard. Let me tell you, I have gotten pretty good at maneuvering it.”

Some of her favorite quotes include, “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one come to you without leaving happier,” by Mother Teresa and “It is often the small steps, not the giant leaps that bring about the most lasting change,” Queen Elizabeth II. Both quotes suit her sweet personality and determination to leave the world a better place.

Thank you for all you do, Loretta!

Employee Spotlight - Darell McCown is our Equipment Manager. Darell’s wealth of equipment knowledge has served this company well for the 26 years he’s been with us. He tried to retire a few years ago partially. Instead, we promoted him and gave him more responsibilities!

He knows more about our equipment than anyone else. He can remember when we changed out the oil filter on a loader back in 1996. His head is a virtual databank of equipment information. He is always looking out for what is needed for the company and has maintained many contacts in the industry over the years to get the best deal.

He has a heart of gold. He and his wife have fostered many children throughout the years. He would also take time off each year to make sure his mom had plenty of firewood to last through harsh winters. Darell is a one-of-a-kind gentleman and we appreciate his many years with us.

Employee Spotlight - Eduardo Chavira

Eduardo has been with the company for over 25 years. This is what some of his colleagues had to say about him:

“He has grown into one of our most reliable and hard-working employees. He is a jack of all trades with a joyful infectious character. Eduardo is not afraid to take on a new project, a new piece of equipment, or any new task given to him. He goes through the day with a song and a dance. His operating skills on a skid steer are unmatched. He can literally make it dance. He is a very giving person in and outside of work. He is known to help family and friends with anything asked of him. He also has the ability to befriend any stranger.”

Thank you for all the laughs and years of service, Eduardo! You are one of a kind!

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT - Mikey the Shop Cat

Meet our shop cat, Mikey. Mikey is a 20 year veteran of the company. Though his official start date is unknown, we think he has been around the shop since at least 2000. He is a great mouser, and he still does his job well. He shows his generosity by bringing in decapitated mice almost weekly. He gets paid in “pate.” He offers protective services and beats up any cat that even gets near his shop. This is one cat you don't want to mess with - just ask his groomer. It takes hours to get him clean. He is one of our long-term employees and has dedicated his life (all 9 of them) to the company! Thank you for your service, Mikey!!

Growing up as an asphalt plant operator, he's seen over 40 years of change in the industry. He has a wealth of experience and a lot of great stories of both industry and strength in overcoming adversity.

Lonnie takes a proactive approach in his work. He does a great job balancing the rigors of work with his attention he gives his family. He is truly a valued member of the Española Mercantile team. Thank you for all your hard work, Lonnie!

Gregory Salazar has been with us for over 20 years. He is very proud of his safety record and considers himself one of the best, if not the best, of our drivers (never fails to mention that his dad is the one who taught him how to drive)! A day of less than 7 round trips from Espanola Transit Mix to Los Alamos Transit Mix is a failure in his eyes. His supervisor, Lonnie Trujillo, has many good things to say about him as well. We are grateful for his many years of service!
