Ford & Friends Day of Legends set to toast Koos Swanepoel & SA race heroes

South Africa has a splendid motorsport history, rich with incredible characters, special venues, wonderful brands and great events. Now four of those legends are about to be highlighted at the Ford & Friends Festival Races at the East

London Grand Prix Circuit on 3 October, with a trib

ute to nobody less than 1964 SA Saloon car champion Koos Swanepoel who will sign off a splendid career among the highlights of a special day’s racing. The East London Grand Prix Circuit is of course steeped in incredible history with the South African Grand Prix run there as long ago as the 1930s and again in the ‘60s, since when the circuit has hardly changed through decades of national racing. Ford & Friends is also an event of note that has enjoyed tremendous support over the years it ran in East London, Cape Town and even travelled up to Namibia and now East London simply cannot wait for its return. And then Ford – a brand so entwined in South African motorsport over so many years that it’s become part of it; never mind that Koos Swanepoel and Ford are pretty much inseparable too. So Ford & Friends 2015 is a truly fitting tribute to the race career of a man who also quite ironically who won the first
Eastern Province championship at the same East London Grand Prix Circuit in 1963. Now 52 years later, Koos Swanepoel will bring an impeccable career that spanned racing the finest muscle Fords from Lotus Cortinas to Cortina and Capri Peranas and many more, to an end with his final race precisely where and how he made his mark for the first time, once again at the wheel of a Ford Anglia…

Being Ford & Friends, Koos will race among many legends on the Border come 3 October and among those to share the track will be son Kosie, himself a racing hero along with the likes of Willie Hepburn, Ian and Jaki Scheckter, Larry Wilford, Martin van Zummeren and Grant

Duckham, to name just a few legends of Ford & Friends set to join Swanepoel as he calls time on his career. The Ford & Friends meeting includes away races for regular Cape Town V8 Masters, Classic Touring Cars and Dunlop Historic classes; Sports & GT and open wheeler races as well as Border Regional Modifieds and Clubmans rounds. Another highlight will be an All Ford Race and an Endurance Race will close the day’s proceedings. A Ford & Friends first is a Father, Son & Daughter race attempting to set a world record for most combinations of siblings competing in a single race at the same race meeting. There’s much more too, with a drifting and karting demonstrations, a drag challenge and of course, the obligatory Ford Fan Park, a new Ford display and a classic car display. Ford & Friends will be televised on Ignition TV DSTV 189 thanks to sponsorship from Eastern Cape Motors and Cape fans not wanting to miss their racers in action will be happy to learn of a 44-seater supporter’s bus travelling up to the Border from Cape Town for the weekend.
