ELECTION DAY IS ONLY SIX WEEKS AWAY! It’s the beating heart of our democracy. We are privileged to live in a state where our voting rights are respected and encouraged. As you may know, New Jersey is now offering early voting opportunities as well as special voting on Sundays, just as many other states across the country are doing everything they can to restrict our right to vote. Electoral justice has never been so important, in the face of voter suppression efforts impacting communities of color and the escalation of the oppression of women with anti-abortion efforts in many states.

The Electoral Justice Task Force of the Social Justice Coalition at UUCM is taking on the mission to live into our 5th and 8th principles, which are the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process, aspiring to dismantle systemic racism and oppression.

In the words of Thurgood Marshall, “When you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.”

We aim to offer every single member of the congregation the opportunity to get involved in voter rights efforts. We hope to offer many platforms for activism, whether it be letter writing, post carding, phone banks, or more robust outreach to marginalized communities. In doing the work, we build a community of aspiration, strength and hope – and have fun doing it!

If you’re interested in working on electoral justice issues, please plan to attend a planning meeting hosted by co-chairs Ellie Bagli and Teresa DeSousa on Wednesday evening, September 29, 2021 at 7:00 PM. Go to today's Social Justice Weekly News email for Zoom link information.
